I am another non-native speaker of Mandarin Chinese; my pronunciation is good but not as good as yours. Indeed it should be a voiced retroflex fricative. Your file Voiced_retroflex_fricative.ogg contains the correct consonant. Perhaps you could re-record Zh-Zhonghua_renmin_gongheguo.ogg with that correction.

The Standard Chinese sound is not a retroflex fricative. For one thing, this fricative is the pronunciation of Russian "ж", a sound I'm familiar with on the level of a native speaker, and I can assure you that it is not equivalent to the Chinese sound as I've heard it from native speakers when studying Chinese at Stockholm University. I've verified this on a theoretical level by consulting The Phonology of Standard Chinese by San Duanmu, and he describes the Chinese sound as a kind of retroflex apprixmant with little or no frication. I'm keeping my recording for now and I hope that it'll be replaced by a native pronunciation soon.

Languages

Hi! (Fellow swede?)I admire your work and I am a frequent user of wikipedia. Just wonder (no need to answer if its improper) if you speak all those languages? And to which degree? How did you manage to learn all that? Are you a language major? Well keep up the good work.

Thank you for the compliments. I only speak Swedish and Russian as a "true" native". I learned English by age 9, so I pass for native there too, though some linguists might disagree.

I can get a long fairly well on my German and I have basic knowledge of Spanish, Latin, Mandarin and Japanese. I can also read texts in Dutch, Italian and French and understand decend amounts of it, but I've never actually studied them. I'm currently a student of Mandarin at Stockholm University, but I don't know if that will actually be my major.

Translation

The sound sample in the English article sounds like good Swedish except that the beginning is missing: you can only hear something resembling "arl von Linné" or "alson Linné". Is the recording voice activated and slow to start? It would be mighty helpful if the entire name was heard. Can you do something about it?

There's nothing wrong with the sound file. You just need to switch players. I've experienced the same problem with players other than Audacity and Winamp.

Thank you for your work, but the recorded [β] is so short that I can't event heard a consonnant from this file (I just hear a short vowel). Sigh. This is a problem that really should be fixed at the software end. There's nothing wrong with the file, it's just that some players just skip the first part of some recordings. Try Winamp or Audacity instead.

Err .. Arabic

The voice file you spoke for

is wrong, that's not how it sounds in Arabic!! It's not only a matter of "accent", but the word "Iraqiya" itself doesn't actually sound as it's written, there's a letter in the beginning that doesn't exist in English, thus cannot be written in English; you failed to pronounce that letter.
Furthermore, the page in the link says that you are a native Arabic speaker .. which is obviously wrong!!

The "native"-tag must've gotten there by mistake, I guess. But the file is actually modeled on a pronunciation of a native speaker. Would you care to be a bit more elaborate about the "letter in the beginning that doesn't exist in English, thus cannot be written in English", so I can correct the file (I'm a good imitator). Or, even better, record one yourself or get another native speaker to do it.

And please don't hesitate to correct obvious errors yourself when you see one. You don't need permission or assistance from the original uploader to do it.

Requests for the Chinese Wikibook

Sorry to disturb you on your break, but I was wondering if I could make some requests of you to help out the Chinese Wikibook. We're currently using your sound file in Lesson 1, but right now we only have two sound samples for our lessons. I'm sure it's apparent that language students will be helped by having audio examples available to them. If you could help fill in some of the blanks for our lesson vocab when you get back to recording, it would really be appreciated.

As for the proper accent, I wouldn't worry too much about it. It's better than nothing and, in my opinion, uploading files with incorrect accents would be the best advertising we could do to motivate a native speaker to improve them. Asking someone to create something that didn't exist already could be harder.

I like your recordings. They're overall very good, but if you'll accept my critique, a few did seem a bit off to me. Particularly, [[:File:|Făguó]] presently sounds like Fàguó, the Taiwanese pronunciation and Měiguó also sounds like it has a more of a fourth tone than a third. For hǎo I can't really explain it, but I feel it should sound more like the English "how".

Not to do with the pronunciation, for the files shéi; shuí and nǎ; něi the two syllables are alternate pronunciations of the same character, so they should be split into separate files. Sorry for the confusion, it's not really an obvious thing for there to be two ways to say a word. Do you think replacing the semicolon with an OR would make it clearer to people?

"Sheí" is as far as I know only a variant of "shuí" (it most likely developed from "shuí") and appears to be associatied only with "谁". It might as well be kept in the current format unless someone finds another "shuí"-meaning.

You should point out that "něi" is more colloquial. All of my classmates who've been to China, and Peking in particular, all say that it's used more in everyday speech. I think "nǎ" seems more formal. Personally, I think "něi" is a bit easier to pronounce. The open "na"-syllable just sounds more contrived and I suspect the Chinese agree with me on that.

I do know now how I can upload sound files (ogg) but I don't know how to upload video files (I also have a video of my tongue). But here are two sound files. I think I get the tongue vibrating, but I don't really know how to make it "voiced" so it sounds like a trilled R. Also in these two sound files I just "pushed" air against the tongue to make it vibrate, nothing different. Could you tell me whether the sound is correct?

You need to actually vibrate your vocal chords while rolling your tounge. Try humming while doing it. But I don't really understand what the purpose of your recordings are. What are you trying to illustrate that isn't covered by the existing recording of an alveolar trill.

I can't help you when it comes to .ogg-video. I have no experience with it whatsoever.

You're just whispering out the trill and it sounds more like a cat purring. You need to actually try practicing some form of natural speech while doing it. Try exchaning your normal "r" with a trilled one in a word familiar to you.

But I really would like to know what the purpose of this is. Is it intended for practical use in any Wikimedia project, like for example an audio illustration for an article?

Alveolar Trilled R

Hi Peter,

I've a suggestion for the article "Alveolar Trilled R" and tell it you, as you've done the sound for it.

I think it would be good if there was a better and longer description as to how to pronounce that sound - do you agree with me?

And another question: I'm learning the sound at the moment. I don't have problems getting my tongue vibrating, but it sounds a little bit unnatural - the sound of the "R" often seems to be a little bit too loud, as if I just did the trill. ʁ and ɥ in En wikipedia

Excuse me. You have recorded the sound for [ʁ], but it seems like a [v] sound instead of [ʁ] which should be a rather "back" consonant.

I know that's due to its muted nature – its volume can't be controlled, and it emerges from closing your vocal cords. As far as I'm concerned, you can include it in any work as long as it's not released for profit and I get proper attribution. I believe that this is all within the limits of the GDFL license. However, I'm not terribly good at copyleft licensing, so I recommend that you read the details of license to be absolutely sure.

Could you please clarify which tunnel is shown on your image Image:Frankfurt Airport tunnel.JPG shown at right?
I would imagine it is the tunnel under the apron between the transit areas (i.e. behind passport control) of areas A and B, but am of course not sure, since I have never been in that tunnel. --L.Willms 05:55, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

Retroflex and Alveolar approximants

How would one determine whether his pronunciation of /r/ is a retroflex approximant or alveolar approximant? I had never even noticed a difference, even though I probably should have, being that I live in the US and that's apparently the only place where the retroflex approximant can be heard. -- ErikB ^Talk 00:27, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

In a linguistic context, you'd have to analyze it through spectrograms or x-rays. If you're sensitive to minute variations in pronunciation (which people who are good at imitating accents always are), it's possible to hear the difference without advanced equipment, but few people have this ability and it's difficult to use it as evidence per se.

However, the US isn't the only place where you can hear this sound. Mandarin Chinese, and especially the Beijing dialect of it, has very pronounced retroflex approximants, which as far as I know is even more retroflex than the US /r/. It's used as a sort of suffix in many types of nouns. Just like in American English, it can give non-natives an impression of a kind "hot potato"-pronunciation.

Perestroika

The Soundfile of Perestrojka is cut unluckily, so you can only hear "stroika". Neither directly with Firefox nor downloaded with VLC you can hear it as a whole.

The file is fine, but many players like to cut short .ogg-files. Use Winamp or Audacity instead.

Hi, the file Ru-Tsaritsyn.ogg (as used in Volgograd) sounds more like "Царица" than "Царицын" to me no matter how many times I listen to it.

Thanks for your note about this image. The reason I removed my note from the image page temporarily is because they had modified the draft email on the deletion debate page by only allowing free use "on the internet", which clearly isn't sufficiently free to be a release into the public domain. So I wrote back and asked for a more clear release of any copyright they held into the public domain. pronunciation of Mendeleev

Yours sounds like 3 syllables: MEN-de-leev But others pronounce it with 4 syllables: MEN-de-LAY-ev

I am trying to determine the proper way to pronounce it for an English language educational video.

That's four syllables. If it sounds like three, it's because the transition isn't accentuated as it would be if someone pronounced the word in English. There's definitely a [j] between the third and fourth syllables.

And the stress, btw, is on the third syllable, even in my pronunciation. I don't know if you by "MEN" mean some type of secondary stress, but as far as I know this is more for English prosody than it for Russian prosody.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

ɕ - improper description

Voiceless_alveolo-palatal_fricative.ogg's description says it's for a voiceless bilabial fricative. Also, as criticism on your vowel recordings, most of them are diphthongs, if short ones, not true flat vowels. I could make recordings of the flat versions, but couldn't be counted as a native speaker for many of them, as English has a lot of vowels that are in-between IPA values or are short diphthongs. As for vowels, you should try to be a bit more specific about exactly what files you're talking about, but I beleive you've contacted the wrong user. Aspirated stops

Hi Peter, thanks very much for all the sound files on Wikipedia, they're really helpful.

I'm thinking we should add recordings of some aspirated stops to WP (to the aspiration article, and to the articles on the stops themselves). This would show how they contrast with their plain counterparts, which you have already recorded. For the English Wikipedia, I guess [pʰ], [tʰ] and [kʰ] would be the most relevant - then English speakers who are studying phonetics could clearly hear the difference that aspiration makes. Do you happen to have such recordings already?
