Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

This file does not seem to work correctly as I hear "Ala Alabama" as well as the expected "Alabama". (This file on Wikipedia.) This happens on the second and subsequent plays. I am using Mozilla Firefox 3.5.3. If you respond here please leave a {{talkback}} on my Wikipedia w:User:Allen4names page. -- Allen4names (talk) 16:58, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

I see (or rather, hear) the issue you describe, and it seems to be an issue with the player, not with the file. Other audio files display the same issue. A more experienced Commonsan (Commoner?) might know more; I'm mainly a Wiktionarian. ruakh (talk) 20:41, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files with a realistic educational purpose and that can be used for any purpose, including:

• use in any work, regardless of content
• creation of derivative works
• commercial use

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above.
