First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hello Spot Image!

Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. — [[Manecke]] 14:05, 26 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Watermarks edit

Please STOP uloading images with watermarks; it's a lot of extra work to remove them. - Erik Baas 17:07, 14 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

We know that uploading images with watermarks is not a good practise but it was the condition that was requested by our partners to share images in Wikimedia Commons. We are working on that and plan to replace them with non-watermaked images as soon as we get the autorisation to do so. Spot Image 10:45, 16 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
You are releasing the images with a CC-SA License which allows everybody to remove the watermark. So there is no need for "authorisation", if you are really the copyright holder for these images and have the rights to release them under CC-SA. --RokerHRO 12:05, 16 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Could you please not be so hostile? That's the best way to discourage such firms to share these images. This issue is being worked out. And please don't imply that they're not the copyright holder; I have already confirmed that they are (see below). But SPOT Image is a company whose business relies on selling such images, so they do need various authorizations from partners to share some images under a free license. guillom 12:18, 16 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Copyvio? edit

Hi. According to this "The SPOT images reproduced in this site are protected by copyright laws" ("Las imágenes SPOT reproducidas en este sitio están protegidas por derechos de autor"). Why do you mark them as your own work? Why do you tag them as CC-BY-SA-3.0? Thanks in advance. --Dodo 13:05, 15 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I've met the owner of this account and I can assert he's working for SPOT Image. I've asked him to send an email to OTRS as a proof of identification. guillom 07:38, 16 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Pourrait-on avoir une boite SPOT image pour éviter que des revers inutiles soient évités... edit

Je viens de me faire piéger... --Cqui 19:00, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

OTRS edit

Why don't you put the OTRS ticket # in the description of the images that you upload?

Besides, is it entierly necessary the watermark in the satellital images?

Regards. --Dodo (talk) 06:09, 13 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

The OTRS ticket was created after the uploads. We might do so for the next uploads. I agree with you that the watermark is not entirely necessary but it was a condition from Spot Image management to submit all these images to Wikimedia. This will probably evolve in the future. Regards. Spot Image (talk) 12:19, 13 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I think you should contact an admin to ask for adding OTRS tickets to every images of yours (old or new). Also, adding a box which is said "you are not allowed to remove the watermark" or create a new license tag for Spot Image. I nearly tent to tag your images with copyvio, luckily, I read your user page first, I guess many users will think the same with me, and you will receive further naive warnings if you don't do anything to tell people. Vinhtantran (talk) 04:47, 30 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm going to run my bot on all the images to add the OTRS ticket. guillom 14:31, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well, any license that is "free enough" for Commons makes it possible for anyone to remove the watermark. --NE2 (talk) 14:09, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Villages in Serbia edit

Hi,

I am one of editors of Serbian language Wikipedia. On it, we have created articles about all villages in Serbia, but we of course can't illustrate every article with an image from every village.

As I have found that you are providing satellite images for Wikimedia projects, I wanted to ask you would it be possible for you to upload satellite images of villages in Serbia? We would gladly provide necessary coordinates, in the format that you prefer. As an example, an image may look like this.

These images would certainly take less than 1‰ of the territory of Serbia, and would not be very detailed, so we believe they would not harm your business interests. Nikola (talk) 18:29, 7 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
