Hello, TracksOnWax!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:SBB S29 Rupperswil Aarau.jpg and duplicate images edit

Hi! You can nominate duplicate images for speedy deletion Bad name (your own images) or Duplicate (other images) templates. See template documentation for further information. Best regards, --Apalsola tc 20:15, 4 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I have seen this information, but as a newbie I did not really understand what exactly I have to write where. All I found out was how to add a delete request - that's what I finally did. If anyone could tell me exactly what to do (not with a template, but with real text), I would be thankful --TracksOnWax (talk) 21:38, 4 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
I agree, these things are quite complicated sometimes. The syntax is correctly named image (without File: or Image: prefix). So, in this particular case, you could have written SBB S26 Rupperswil Aarau.jpg. Duplicate template work similarly. --Apalsola tc 22:10, 4 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
I see that you have already placed this information in the said file. Thanks. --TracksOnWax (talk) 13:49, 5 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
