Thank you so much for getting a photo of the building!

BTW, do you plan to get a photo of the Iran Civil Aviation Organization (CAO) building, also at Mehrabad?

Hello, مانفی!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

creative commons and public domain edit

monfie, if you don't understand the template, i feel like you didn't understand the difference between public domain and creative commons. They are NOT equivalent. With a creative commons license, i retain my rights on my pictures, whereas with PD i give them away. That means with creative commons license. My pictures are free to use by anyone, even commercially, but I ask to be credited for it. If you have more questions about licensing, don't hesitate to ask... Fabienkhan (talk) 08:11, 1 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Of course it must be credited, but I assume you asked every one to get permission for use. (special use), I don't know what is it because all kind of use, even commercial use, is already permitted with creative commons licence.Monfie (talk) 15:49, 1 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
actually, it's just to say to picture buyers that they can contact me, in any case they would like to pay for the use. There's no special value to this claim ;-) Fabienkhan (talk) 08:19, 2 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Panorama pics edit

(From my talk -- I'll respond here) Hi, Do you believe is it likely to succeed if I nominate this? What about this one? Any betterment you suggest?

Thanks --Monfie (talk) 08:45, 3 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi,
You’ve picked some impressive subjects and very challenging images. I suspect, however, that they wouldn’t succeed at FP because of technical flaws. Some of these are due to the simplicity of Microsoft ICE in how it stitches, and some of them are problems with the source images.
  • The first picture has some stitching errors (where the alignment between frames isn’t perfect). The focus on the back wall is good in one frame but poor in the next. It should also be possible to correct the vertical sloping walls, though this will have consequences for the resolution at the top of the picture and a degree of downsizing may then be appropriate.
  • The second picture needs to have the verticals corrected and the horizon levelled. The image has twins: where the same person appears twice.
I’m a relative beginner when it comes to stitching images and there are other folk on Commons who are much better than me. Here’s some advice from what I’ve learned so far:
  • Hugin will do a better job than ICE but there’s a big learning curve to the program and it can be a little buggy. It is free, though and offers a lot of manipulation/adjustment options. Also Smartblend is better than Hugin’s built-in blender but as with most things about Hugin, the documentation is poor and outdated.
  • You might be able to remove twins if your images overlap considerably by using masks in Hugin. However, for complex scenes, you need a good image editor. I’ve recently bought Photoshop on an educational licence but even that is expensive and lots to learn. Possibly Elements or Gimp will do. An editor can also help tidy up any slight alignment issues and polish aspects of the picture.
  • You can avoid twins somewhat by taking care not to include people twice. Perhaps wait till the person walks out of frame. Or if people are all walking left to right then take your shots right to left.
  • Make sure your source images overlap lots. This will not only help alignment but gives you some redundancy so that you can pick people/cars/etc from one image rather than another. This helps fix twins and also people cut off, etc.
  • Take more photographs than you think you need. Both surrounding your object and also consider taking two sets. When you adjust for perspective, it alters the shape of the image considerably, so a big margin round the subject helps keep everything in the final crop. If you have a failure and can’t return to the subject to re-take the shot, the spare images may help.
  • Set your camera to manual exposure and fire of some test shots to see if the highlights and shadows are within the exposure range. Use the camera histogram. It is important that all the shots are taken with the same exposure – the software can fix this later but best to get it right first.
  • Set the lens to manual focus. You don’t want the focus shifting between adjacent shots and auto-focus can produce different results for two consecutive images of the same area.
  • Large panoramas can have a challenging range of exposure so shooting in RAW will help give freedom to contain this range. Hugin supports 16-bit workflow.
  • Try to rotate the lens round the nodal point to minimize parallax errors. This won’t be an issue for subjects in the distance but matters if some things (e.g. lamp posts) are nearby. The nodal point is roughly in the middle of your lens but varies. If you are rich, you can buy special tripod heads to get perfect results.
  • If the picture has a very wide angle of view then a rectilinear projection isn’t possible: curved horizontals are inevitable to some degree. You need to use one of the cylindrical projections instead. Your second photo could look good with a cylindrical projection. If it also has a very high angle of view then those won’t work either and you need another projection such as stereographic, which will have curved verticals and horizontals.
If you want to investigate Hugin and try to improve your pictures, then I'll try to help you with it if I can. I'll watchlist your talk page. Alternatively, I might be able to improve on them, but then we'd need to arrange some way of getting the originals (ideally RAW) to me. You can email me if you like. Picture of the Year voting round 1 open edit

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Hi مانفی, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the Rename template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

I've given you the filemover right, but you shouldn't rename files that are in other languages without first discussing the reasoning behind such moves at COM:AN or COM:VP and seeing if there's support for doing such moves. For now, you should stick closely to the rename guidelines. INeverCry 18:50, 21 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

Yes, I did not reassess because my objections were not properly met. Still now, the ashlars are not rectilinear. I don't mind if the machine is skewed but the ashlars of the building are for sure not. So your perspective correction should consider the verticals of the ashlars and not of the peep show machine. File renaming and more edit

Hello مانفی, thanks for your contribution regarding to Jean Chardin. Together with that i want to raise two issues:

First, File renaming. According to file renaming policy of Commons file may rename only of one of the reasons mentioned her (1 to 7). Non of the files been meaningless, misleading or with obvious errors. So I think that there was real reason to rename them.

More than that, part of the rename were mistakes. For example File:03 Chardin Tiflis 1671 second version.jpg. The name it the is Teflis and not Tiflis as you wrote (see her bigger). The file published in 1723 (see the source). that is truth that it based on former publication but this particular file published in 1723. So the year correction was wrong. So please rename back to the original name or/and let's discuss in the files talk page. I don't mind if you add the Persian or Arabic name near Teflis, but basically the original names should be restored. Next time I think it be good idea to use:

.

second, re-upload files like you made her is un correct. It better to upload them in a different file name. You can see examples her.

hopefully my criticism will accept with understanding. Geagea (talk) 00:57, 19 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Geagea. Thanks for comments. I changed names of some of Jean Chardin's images because they were a bit messy and confusing. Multiple uploads with different and very long names. BTW, you are right and some of them was not correct to do. About especial image that you mention, Teflis, I just wanted to unify name of different imaged and chose, not made, one name for all. Actually if I wanted to made, the name must be Tbilisi (modern and local name of the city) but date of drawing the original work is 1671 and then it published in different dates. And about second, you are 100% right. Overriding that image, that I did one year ago, was a mistake.Monfie (talk) 17:43, 19 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks and sorry for bothering. -- Geagea (talk) 10:25, 2 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Ok! I'll post a list:
Aviation-related:
  • Mehrabad Airport
  • Taban Air headquarters - NO. 10, Fiat Alley, Ekbatan Main Boulevard, 1st Phase, Ekbatan Complex, Tehran/تهران _ شهرک اکباتان – فاز1 _ بلوار اصلی _ کوچه فیات _ پلاک 10
International schools: - Keep mind mind that some of these schools may be at diplomatic facilities so you may have to ask permission to photograph them and/or ask them to provide a photograph:
  • Tehran International School
    • Girls' school: 36 Farahzādi Blvd, (the junction of Pūnak-e Bākhtarī and Farahzādī Blvd,) Shahrak-e Qods/Gharb Tehran, Iran -- or Dadman St., Shahid Farahzadi Bld., Shahrak-e Ghods, Tehran, Iran
    • Boys' secondary school: No.1 , Farhang Sq., Sadat Abad, Tehran, Iran
    • Boys' primary school: No.60, East Sarv St., Kaj Sq., Saadat Abad, Tehran, Iran
  • Tehran Japanese School: NO.18 GHOBADIAN-WEST ST.AFRICHA AV.TEHRAN, IRAN
    • Former school: No.117 Naft 12th St, Zafar Ave, Tehran, Iran
  • German Embassy School Tehran: Shariati, under the Sadr Bridge Shahid Keshani St. (Mahale Darbdowom) Tehran/Iran
    • International section (former British School of Tehran): Shahid Keshani Street, Dr. Shari'ati Street, Tehran 19396. Islamic Republic of Iran.
  • NOTE: The École Française de Téhéran at No 1553, Shariati Ave, Téhéran, IRAN is on the property of the British embassy residential compound. It may be possible to photograph the entrance of the British compound if that is allowed/you get permission. I do not believe you will be able to photograph the school itself...

OK. at least some of them are very likely to be photographed by me. but I inform you that street view of international schools are not so interesting (because they are usually located in a garden) and they don't let me to enter and take photo from beulings from inside school.Monfie (talk) 11:23, 18 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
Ok. When I get photos it's usually of the exterior with the sign visible (for example File:JapaneseSchoolKLMalaysia.jpg in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia). I'm most interested in the Japanese schools.
Thank you!
WhisperToMe (talk) 23:37, 18 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
Tehran International School by sure has no sign. others I'm not sure. I will check. Monfie (talk) 17:46, 19 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
Ok. In case all three TIS campuses (boys primary, boys secondary, girls) have no signs, what I like to do is take a photo showing distinct architecture so people in Tehran will be able to recognize the building. If/when there are signs it's best to photograph the signs in Persian and the ones in Latin script or other languages. WhisperToMe (talk) 04:14, 20 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

If it's ok, I found one more: A Korean school: Korean Embassy School No.21, 4th street Bucharest Ave., Tehran, Iran WhisperToMe (talk) 02:58, 21 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open! edit

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear مانفی,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Copyright and use of images edit

Hi مانفی,

I'm contacting you about the use of your images in my website (www.dixon.es).

I've got to admit that the different copyright and licensing agreements under which fotos are made available via Wikicommons seem a bit of a labyrinth to me, hence my contacting you directly.

If you have a look at the website you'll see that I've added a copy of your image "https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=428179272 to a slider on the home page.

I'm not a programmer, and fighting with websites is a real trial for me. However, I've got this far, and I'd like to know how you'd like me to proceed with a credit (assuming that you're ok about my using the foto in the first place, of course).

I did initially add credits to the fotos themselves, but they looked really poor in the standard slider that I've used, so I removed them and added a "Credits" link on the main menu, with intention of listing all the fotos that I've used along with the corresponding credit and link.

So, before I go ahead, I'd like to have your feedback about the idea, and of course about the use of your foto.

Look forward to hearing from you

Pay attention to copyright
File:Akbar Abdi.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Important message for file movers edit

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
