Barnstar

Just a thought… I'm sure someone else can come up with something better. Useddenim (talk) 14:04, 22 July 2013 (UTC)
Moved from Talk:BSicon/Icon topology and semantics
As said somewhere else we “need” a barnstar. Here’s a suggestion — you'll need to check it at my user page at wp:pt because Commons lacks multiple overlay support (something else we need to fix); it could be recreated as a single SVG file. -- Tuválkin ✉ 14:17, 22 July 2013 (UTC)
Placement
editWhat has really been bugging me lately is the lack of consistency across pages. The diagrams are often placed in different spots in each thread, sometimes under its own sectional header, sometimes in the infobox. I think we should standardise where the diagrams should be placed.
The two most popular placements; in the infobox or under a header would be preferred. Deonyi 07:08, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
- That’s a matter pertaining to each project, not to Commons. I agree it should be standartized, in principle (many exceptions, though), but each project has its own policies and technical details concerning infoboxes and the like. Also, the standartization you seek will be only possible when all projects share the same templates. -- Tuválkin ✉ 10:02, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
- They do not share the same templates? If you mean infoboxes, depending on the placement, you could update it to include the map or remove the particular code and place it on its own.Deonyi 00:56, 27 July 2013 (UTC)
- I meant the BS-templates — they need to be synchronized across projects before any other standartization is even possible. That’s one of our goals and one of our open tasks. -- Tuválkin ✉ 10:26, 27 July 2013 (UTC)

Locks icons are scrambled
editHi, a number of lock icons seem to be scrambled. The page is still there, but the actual icon does not display, and it has caused mayhem to break out on the waterways maps on en:Wikipedia. So far, I have found (uFGATEd
), (uFGATEu
) and (uSTAIRd
). Bob1960evens (talk) 10:16, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
- I have now reported these on Phabricator. Bob1960evens (talk) 14:07, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
- These files appear to be valid SVG images, except that that they lack two or three features which are not, strictly speaking, required; but some user agents may fail to process them properly if these features are absent. These are: (i) a DTD - the line may be inserted at the very start to fix this; (ii) there is no SVG version information, so the opening
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?>
<svg>
tag should be given the attributesxmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" version="1.1"
in addition to those that it already has. --Redrose64 (talk; at English Wikipedia) 15:53, 28 November 2017 (UTC)- I think it is more serious than the svg. Aklapper, who is dealing with the Phabricator report, I think, suggests they are generating an HTTP 429 error, and commons fails to load the files. It has just started happening, and my setup has not changed for years. Bob1960evens (talk) 13:58, 29 November 2017 (UTC)
- Phabricator T181507 has been closed as declined. The error has only just occurred, and the files have displayed correctly for years. I have tried adding various stuff to the front of the file, in line with other icons that still work, but BSicon_uFGATEd.svg still fails to display. Bob1960evens (talk) 14:38, 29 November 2017 (UTC)
- After a second attempt, uFGATEd eventually displayed properly. I will try the others. Bob1960evens (talk) 15:02, 29 November 2017 (UTC)

User page template
edit- On the project page i read that creating a better user page template is one of the open tasks. So some months before I had designed a template which could fit in this task – but on de:WP. So I translated and moved it to Commons and you can look at it here. What do you think? If I have to improve something, just write it down here or on the template's talk page. -- C21H22N2O2 /talk/lab/de/en 20:35, 25 March 2018 (UTC)

Terminology and translation (end of line stations)
edit-
head station; Kopfbahnhof
-
end station, ex track to the right; Kopfbahnhof, ex Strecke nach rechts
-
ex terminal station, track to the right; Kopfbahnhof, Strecken nach rechts
-
closed station: terminus of closed line, through line remains open
The four examples above seem to use four different English terms for the same thing ("head station", "end station", "terminal station", "terminus").
They seem to describe stations at the end of line ("a terminus"). I'd suggest to use just one term.
Neither seems to translate as "Kopfbahnhof" (at least when following de:Kopfbahnhof). So some other term in German should be found. Enhancing999 (talk) 08:04, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
- Nonetheless, they all more-or-less adequately convey the meaning. A more serious problem are all the icons that have descriptions that merely say "BSicon", "Icon for railway diagrams", or something equally vague. Useddenim (talk) 19:12, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
- It depends what you consider "more-or-less adequate". Using different or incorrect descriptions for similar icons can be confusing and lead to mis-categorization.
- "Kopfbahnhof" is "Säckstation" in Swedish and "gare en cul-de-sac" in French. While this may be appropriate for some lines, in general, it's not and doesn't adequately describe the type of station. Accordingly Category:Dead-end_train_stations isn't applicable to these icons.
- Once they are all in correct categories, the detailed description is secondary. Please leave my comment(s) here. I don't want to discuss galleries. Enhancing999 (talk) 06:49, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
- None of these icons are in Category:Dead-end train stations but all are correctly categorized within Category:BSicon/railway sub-cats, so I don't know what the issue is. And what do image galleries have to do with this discussion? Useddenim (talk) 13:54, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
- Nothing, which is why I undid your moving of my comment.
- Talk:BSicon (where I tried to move this discussion) is about the icons themselves; Talk:BSicon/Catalogue is for the catalogue pages (or "galleries", as you called them); and this page is for dicussing the BSicon project in general.
- BSicon is a gallery. Enhancing999 (talk) 04:31, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
- In name only; it's a catalog/directory/index for the BSicon project. (I have to use multiple synonyms since you seem to insist on using literal definitions.) Useddenim (talk) 21:39, 21 August 2022 (UTC)

- It's just bad to have a description "Säckstation" (or translation) on any of these icons. Enhancing999 (talk) 03:44, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
- So fix them, instead of just complaining. (And I'm not aware of any icons that have descriptions in Swedish.) Useddenim (talk) 04:25, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
