Hello, Almonroth!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Wanna vote for your pic?Edit

Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Woman outside Sepulchre-2.jpg--Canoe1967 (talk) 00:33, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks so much for nominating this, Canoe. I really appreciate the heads up, but it seems immodest to vote for my own shot in this way. Is that common for FP nominations? Thanks Almonroth (talk) 14:55, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

It is very common for creators to post their own work and then vote for it. If you go through the list you may see that many are.--Canoe1967 (talk) 17:37, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

You may wish to add your vote. It is a tight race because of moral issues.--Canoe1967 (talk) 01:18, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!Edit

Your photographs from Israel are absolutely stunning!! Thank you for sharing them with the world :) Sarah (talk) 02:57, 8 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, Sarah! I really appreciate my first Commons barnstar coming from you. Also, I have some other shots from Israel/West Bank that I'm excited to upload during the Wiki Loves Monuments contest in September. Have you heard of it? ;) Almonroth (talk) 05:32, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

Image Resolution Feedback - Thanks!Edit

Thanks for the feedback on my first attempts on the site. I shot these mostly with my 5D MkII and MkIII, so resolution isn't an issue. 720P is just what I've tended to size my online work to. I'm new to this, but I think I noticed that you can upload an updated image - so I could just save higher resolution ( 2+ MP) versions of the images and upload them in the place of the original upload, right?

Thanks for taking a few minutes to help out. Certainly appreciated! Now to see if I get this linking thing correct: GPVonde (Talk), Fine Art Blog.

Thanks for the kind words. You're stuff is great as well. I'm a big Architectural buff and I really enjoyed your detail shots. Good luck in the 2012 contest! GPVonde (Talk), [http://deremerstudios.wordpress.com/category/fine-art-photography/ Fine Art Blog

Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2012!

Dear Almonroth,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2012, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world!

Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 350,000 pictures of cultural heritage objects from 36 countries around the world, becoming the largest photography competition to have ever taken place.

You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet).

If you'd like to start editing relevant Wikipedia articles and share your knowledge with other people, please go to the Wikipedia Welcome page for more information, guidance, and help.

To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey. Please fill in this short survey in your own language, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2012.

Kind regards,
the Wiki Loves Monuments team

Picture of the Year voting round 1 openEdit

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
