Western Pacific (1862-1870)

edit

Why are you moving files from the Niles Subdivision category to the parent category? Those locations are now part of the Niles Subdivision and should be categorized there. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 06:46, 11 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

What locations are included in the Niles Subdivision? Should pictures taken before Niles was named be in the Niles subdivision? Finally, what is the rationale for a Niles Subdivision in a historical parent category like WPRR (1862-1870) during which period a Niles Subdivision was not implemented?

As a general rule: when classifying files by the physical line (subdivision, branch, etc), go by the most recent name for the line. That means that all pictures taken on a given stretch of track are in one category, rather than being split up. In this case, what is now the Niles Subdivision was part of the original WP, so it's a subcategory of the WP category and thus easy to find from there.
The Niles Subdivision was from CP 10th Street (just south of the abandoned 16th Street station), though the East Bay to Niles, up through the Canyon (now the Niles Canyon Railway), though the Tri-Valley (a short section in Livermore is still in use as as diversion from the Oakland Subdivision), over the Altamont, and to Tracy. Several sections are still in use - CP 10th Street to Niles by UP and Amtrak, the Niles Canyon Railway, that bit in Livermore, and the part near Tracy by UP. The rest of the line through the Tri-Valley and the Altamont is abandoned, though there's a proposal to rebuild the latter for passenger service.
To make it more complicated: Niles to Newark to Redwood City, and Elmhurst (north of San Leandro) to Santa Clara were also considered part of the Niles Subdivision at the time. However, Newark to Redwood City is now considered the Dumbarton Cutoff, and Elmhust to Santa Clara part of the Coast Subdivision, so files on those sections are categorized there.
