Species categories

Hi, please do not put images into species categories if they are already on a species page. Please read this discussion. -- aka 08:11, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Agrimonia

I am creating gallery articles for this species and placing them in the higher order Category:Agrimonia and removing the now duplicate image in the Category. Some believe there should be images in both but I believe it makes for a cleaner looking page. This is just to let you know what I am doing in case you want to put them back. Category:Historic American Engineering Record

Hi Choess, thank you for your help in categorization of historic landmarks. Please do not add this category manually to the image. The Category:Historic American Engineering Record is a source and license category for images using the {{HAER}} license only. Myself im only working on quality in this single category, but i remember Category:National Register of Historic Places by state and subcategories for topic categorization. Serpentine

Hi, well, I do not understand what a serpentine barren is, perhaps because English is not my native language. Does this mean that this flower (almost) only grows on a soil that is made of the mineral called "serpentine" ? If so, well, maybe it would be ok to put it back in the category serpentine. But, as you may see, the content of this category is images of the mineral serpentine, or of objects made of it.

So, at the end of the day, it's up to you..

Former train stations

If you look at the current parent categories Category:Former train stations and Category:Disused train stations, "Former" implies a change in function while "Disused" implies abandoned. Also, I wanted to match other "Former (buildings)" categories since I only see "Disused" for trains stations and I'm not sure why. Hope that explains it and perhaps there needs to be some changes of categories for images of buildings. Xnatedawgx (talk) 02:12, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

I really like your work on commons: sorting all these pictures is a tedious but vital work (it is what I also do ;-))
About this modification, don't you feel that it would be better to provide a new {{Genera}} entry with your source as source= or ref=.
What you did here is change the content of Smith et al. 2006 which is obviously not post-2006 ;-).

categorizing minerals as mines?

HABS housekeeping

Hi, looking at your change here, I suspect that the housekeeping routine I'm running might restore the geocoordinates, and possibly other stuff. I could add your account name as an exception, i.e. any file you have edited should not be changed again, but this might lead to good changes being missed.

I'm leaving it for the moment. If you see changes that make images worse, please leave a note on my talk page and I'll probably go ahead and make your touched files exempt from future housekeeping (though I could also skip files based on the particular edit comment left on the file history).

Note, after the full HABS uploads are complete (possibly a couple more weeks to go), there will probably be final checks for a few days, then there should be no more systematic housekeeping stuff going on. Thanks --Fæ (talk) 13:07, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

I'll just stop and wait for the housekeeping to finish running next month or whenever. I think there are some I've touched that haven't been geotagged yet and hence are missing whatever other metadata (related names, etc.) you're putting in, so go ahead and I'll figure out how to deal with these when I'm done. Actually, I've just added an exception to geocoordinate additions. If the file version history contains the word "inaccurate" in the comments, then adding or correcting geocoordinates will be skipped; this is not specific to any account name. Other checks/improvements would not be affected. So if you see any geocoordinates that are badly wrong, please do just go ahead an improve them, just remember to use the key word "inaccurate" somewhere in your edit comment. --Fæ (talk) 13:24, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Your reasons for renaming the category are perfectly justified, but this is not for a Pennsylvania Railroad related category. shortened category names

I'm sure you have only seen the numerous long category names that I used, but since then I have been shortening new categories with each complaint. As for requests not to create these categories in the first place I have to strongly disagree as I did with another editor. These sub-categories for HAER images may share common categories such as "black and white photos", "year photographed", photographer and HAER images in given state. Editors should stop creating redirect categories on these pages which make them in effect null and void. Xnatedawgx (talk) 03:30, 29 July 2015 (UTC)

Maine vs Massachusetts

I don't use HotCat. The categorisation was intentional, because (1) as you note, it was part of MA, and (2) aside from big cities with lots and lots of photos, we don't have any trees of built-in-year categories for entities smaller than the state, so having this represent the District of Maine would be unusual and (in my opinion) rather unhelpful, especially because it would only work from "from American independence until the Missouri Compromise on March 4, 1820", to quote the District of Maine en:wp article. Of course I'm willing to listen if you disagree with the idea, but at the moment, I don't see this as being fundamentally different from putting Category:Wheeling Suspension Bridge into Category:Built in Virginia in 1849 or putting Category:Built in Estonia in 1910 into Category:Built in Russia in 1910. NYPL stereograms

Hi, thanks for your work categorizing this collection. The mostly blank category is to help identify files which can be speedily deleted. I'm aware that many of the backs of the stereogram prints are uninteresting, but when they are more than purely blank apart from standard stamps or archivist numbers, they are not really suitable for a speedy delete. An example is File:Panorama from Bunker Hill monument, south (NYPL b11707567-G90F317 050B).tiff where the handwritten notes are a useful confirmation of dates and content, as well as giving images of that print more educational value. There are some criteria to this effect as a comment at the top of Category:NYPL (mostly blank). Most of the backs probably will end up being deleted, but I think it's worth erring on the side of caution. Thanks --Fæ (talk) 10:05, 27 June 2016 (UTC)

I don't know my bridge types very well; I simply put in a broader cantilever category because it looked like you'd taken it out by accident — as a steel bridge, it doesn't belong in Iron cantilever bridges, and I supposed you'd removed that without noticing that you'd not put in another cantilever category. Yes, it's been a problem for quite a while; one can even find claims that iron was being used to build interstate highway bridges in the 1960s! I've tended to remove iron categories from bridges that postdate 1900, except for bridges built by the Wrought Iron Bridge Company (did they switch to steel at some point?), and I don't add these categories to bridges unless I have documentation. Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

• To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
• To perform file name swaps.
• When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning.
