Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

The license of this image, Cc-by-nc-sa is not free for commercial use and is therefore not permitted as Commons. Commons only accepts images under a free license. Please read Commons:Licensing before making further uploads. If you use the Flickr upload bot, you will only be able to upload Flickr images if they are tagged with a Commons-compatible license. —LX (talk, contribs) 21:30, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
- Didn't you see in the large bold "the author gave me permission"? I was given permission to use the image.... you can even read the permission in the pictures page on Flikr. Do you admins even read the description or do you just delete things because it has a template? (reply on my talk page)--Cooljuno411 01:53, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
- I did see that. Unfortunately, Permission to use is not sufficient. The copyright holder must explicitly allow anyone to use the image in modified or unmodified form for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Here, the copyright holder has instead explicitly prohibited commercial uses by selecting the Cc-by-nc-sa license. If you can convince them to drop the noncommercial restriction, drop a note at my talk page or Commons:Undeletion requests and it'll be undeleted. —LX (talk, contribs) 07:50, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:48, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi. Is that template stub needed, or may I delete it? --AVRS (talk) 21:55, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi, this template and Template:VVMAP/flickr/tempnote was deleted. The authors are well attributed in the Information template, if you want to you can accent the attribution in the license template

the Wikipedia projects are only one of our reusers, if you want to change the way of image usage inside the english Wikipedia the best place to do so is this Wikipedia project. Bothering all potential reusers, 700 Wikimedia projects and outside uses, just because of one Wikipedia project is not the correct way. See Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/Attention#Ownership issues (stable link)
Another question: Do we realy need Template:VVMAP/Information? The will fall back after the developement of Template:Information, it is highly redundant - to provide a YouTube video link and give it a proper name is not so difficult. --Martin H. (talk) 12:24, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Your account will be renamed edit
Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Cooljuno411. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Cooljuno411~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell
