Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Hi. Then, couldn't we upload photos from Google Earth? I don't know if I've choosen the correct rights for the file you eliminated (Fuerte Chacal.jpg), but I thinked that Google Earth derivated files had copyleft.--Dagane (talk) 11:19, 18 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

I took the picture from an official website. It let to use the picture if the use is free.

You need to provide verifiable source information to support your claims that the file is published under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike license. Saying that you found it on "a website" is hardly verifiable information. Ok. The picture was taken from a website which belongs to the Reocín consistorium, like it's written in the picture information; it's this: http://www.reocin.es/?mod=seccion14. And the terms of use of that web are here: http://www.reocin.es/?mod=seccion2500. In that website you can read this: Reproducción autorizada de la información contenida en la web del Ayuntamiento de Reocín siempre que se cite la fuente, salvo expresa indicación de una titularidad diferente. La reproducción de información de la web municipal no puede efectuarse sin hacer constar el mensaje "Información obtenida de la web oficial del Ayuntamiento de Reocín" Abstract: everybody can use the contents of the website if saying the source (and it's supposed without gain monetary profits), so I did just that, I wrote that I took it from that website and upload the picture.--Dagane (talk) 18:40, 22 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

You ask me for an explanation of a photo (explaning why we can take it), I gave it to you in my discussion and in yours, you didn't answer and now the picture is deleted. Sorry I didn't reply before. The reason the file was deleted was that you did not actually address the problems with the file. It still looks to me like you simply made up the claim that the file was published by the copyright holder under the terms and conditions of the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike license. As far as I can tell, it's not mentioned on any of the pages you link to. Unfortunately, the statement that you quote is not clear and specific enough to meet Commons' requirements. In particular, distributing modified versions of the content and commercial uses must be explicitly permitted. —LX (talk, contribs) 15:12, 26 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.

Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Dagane. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Dagane~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.

Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
