De Goldschmidt edit
Please understand that "de Goldschmidt" means "the goldsmith", not "of [the] goldsmith". The fact that this surname is found in a French language context has merely to do with some citizenry of France having Dutch-speaking ancestors, it doesn’t affect the semantics of this "de". Be so kind as to revert your undoing of my edit. -- Tuválkin ✉ ✇ 12:17, 11 December 2021 (UTC)
- In this case the name is derived from "von Goldschmidt", since his ancestors, like themselves, are of German birth and have given themselves a French name. Accordingly, the person himself chose the French form of the surname. HarryNº2 (talk) 12:28, 11 December 2021 (UTC)
- I see. However, this is a generic category for anyone named So-and-so de Goldschmidt, not specifically for these two French individuals currently categorized in it to whom your explanation applies. Maybe an intermediary category is needed, to leave this one for people surnamed "the goldsmith" in Dutch. -- Tuválkin ✉ ✇ 20:32, 11 December 2021 (UTC)
