What is source of data used for File:US Incarceration Rate per 100,000 Inhabitants by State.png
editThanks for this great map: File:US Incarceration Rate per 100,000 Inhabitants by State.png
Is the current map based on the current data from here?:
That table may be updated by me, or others, and so I want to put an accurate description in the caption for the map on that page. "US Incarceration Rate per 100,000 Inhabitants by State in 2013". The table may be updated to 2016 or whatever.
So in the image description on the Commons it is always good to give the exact source of the data for the latest upload of a table, chart, or map on the Commons. That way it can be more accurately described in Wikipedia articles, and elsewhere it is used.
If you are using "2013 rate per 100,000 of all ages" from the Wikipedia page, then there should be 5 states above 900. The map lists only one, Louisiana. I suggest changing the legend description by adding "1000 to 1099". Since Louisiana is 1082.
Also, start the legend at 200-299 since the lowest incarceration rate is for Maine at 285. That way you keep the same colors. I love the color scheme for the map. --Timeshifter (talk) 16:44, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- The source is the 2016 data from the BJS: https://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/p16.pdf
- It's based on the 2016 data from https://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/p16.pdf
- I am using 2016 data. The rates have decreased between 2013-2016.

- Thanks for your efforts on the chart, and for your replies. I moved the replies to the normal location for replies. See w:WP:TALK. Replying within another person's comments is not OK according to it. Because it would make discussions very difficult to follow. Please sign your replies. - I see that you used the state by state data from table 7 on page 9 in this BJS PDF:
- Prisoners in 2016.
- It only has data for prison inmates, and does not include jail inmate.
- I suggest using the state by state data from Appendix table 1 on page 12 in this BJS PDF:
- Correctional Populations in the United States, 2015.
- The far-right column: "Incarceration rate per 100,000 U.S. residents of all ages".
- It includes both jail and state inmates, and so it is more accurate. And the state rates can be compared to the country rates here:
- w:List of countries by incarceration rate
- The lowest rate is 270 per 100,000 in the District of Columbia.
- The highest rate is Louisiana at 1,050 per 100,000. --Timeshifter (talk) 08:27, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
