Location? edit

Hi ImagePerson - could you add some details about where you took File:Tree against sky.jpg please? It will help a lot with identification and adding the right categories. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 22:20, 18 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

The tree is on the ridgeline above Mossy Cave trail in Bryce Canyon Park. It is a limber pine, I think. I will update the entry. Paul Harrison (talk) 15:31, 19 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
Excellent, thanks! From that location, it's a Ponderosa Pine (of the subspecies Pinus ponderosa subsp. brachyptera to be exact); the needles are too long for Limber Pine. - MPF (talk) 18:23, 19 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Duplicate images edit

Hello, ImagePerson! (Or do you prefer Paul?) I notice that a couple of Ottawa fire files you just uploaded look exactly the same, and that while both have the same pixel dimensions File:Fire hoses play on burning house 5241.jpg is several times larger than File:House Fire Sprayed by Fire Hoses 5241.jpg. The general default assumption is that the larger file should be kept, but here I wonder if the larger one might have been ‘inflated’ with extraneous data from the processing software (working channels, alternative formats, version history &c.) and therefore a waste of bandwidth to most prospective downloaders. Or does it perhaps have a greater bit-depth or use ‘gentler’ compression, making it potentially more useful? I could probably make a determination by downloading them, but I thought it easier just to ask … Please decide which is the redundant copy and tag it with {{Duplicate}} or {{SD|G7}}. If the better one has the less preferred filename, just let me know and I expect I can move it once the other is gone. Thanks!—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:23, 28 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. Will review this in the next day or two and let you know. My view is that if I cannot see a difference at 100% the larger file should go. Paul Harrison (talk) 15:40, 28 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Delete the larger one "Fire Hoses play...". The smaller one actually has very light denoise and sharpen, was saved as a high resolution jpg, and looks slightly better. I think I have inserted the tag you asked for, but let me know if not. Paul Harrison (talk) 17:20, 28 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yes, thanks, although you forgot to include the extension, which is needed in links. (I fixed it: if you look at the page now—if it’s not already deleted—you should see a preview in the yellow box. A red link like File:House Fire Sprayed by Fire Hoses 5241 indicates that the target does not exist—and if you think it should, there’s probably a typo.) Happy editing, and the best of the new year!—Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:13, 28 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
