They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. Goodies, tips, and tricks Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities. You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads. Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~. To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg. You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account. There are several tools to upload files. Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful. Made a mistake? Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it. Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Photos of "Grande Arche de la Défense"

Regarding your questions [1] & [2]:

"FOP" means "Freedom of panorama" and "NoFOP" means "No freedom of panorama". These terms are related with the possibility or not to publish photos of architectural works (or buildings, sculptures, paintings, drawings, books, or any other creations) according to the laws of the countries where these works are located. More explanations here: Commons:Freedom of panorama.

In France, only the publication of photographs of works designed by a creator who died for more than 70 years is authorized.

Oh yes, tourists can take photos of the famous buildings in Paris; for their own use. But publications on internet (or in a book) are restricted.

Thanks for the clarification, @Poudou99: - looking at the link, I think that most of my photographs won't be acceptable :-(

I am confused, since there are entire categories devoted to public buildings in France, so I'm puzzled why these have been approved (there are categories for high-quality images that have been approved by the admins here), and aren't illegal. I also have some :pictures from Italy, Spain, and many other countries where it seems photos of public buildings aren't allowed here. It seems my plan to pay back the many useful images I've had from Wikimedia Commons by contributing my own has been thwarted.

Since the laws seem only to apply to making commercial use of images, do you know if there is a repository other than Wikimedia Commons where I would legally be allowed to share such photos (under a CC BY-SA-NC licence to ensure it's non-commercial)? --LeicesterChris (talk) 21:17, 27 February 2021 (UTC)

Each country has is own law on this domain. France is the one having the more restricted rules. But fortunately not all buildings in Paris and in France are all concerned by these rules. Many many photographs of them can be published.

Not sure all your photos are "illegal". They should be mostly acceptable.

No one is an great expert on this very complicated subject. So by default, you can assume that your photos are compliant and if someone (like me) states that this is not the case, check the rules of the country concerned and start a discussion (like today).

So don't be too thwarted and continue to upload your photos which will be certaintly useful for illustrating Wikipedia articles. --Poudou99 (talk) 22:45, 27 February 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for your response, @Poudou99: ! A charity that I'm involved with was recently threatened with legal action for using an image from a press agency on their website; fortunately, we settled out of court and made a payment that wasn't too terrible, and it was a stupid mistake on our part. This has made me very nervous about posting images that may be breaching the law, though. As you say, perhaps no one is an expert, but I'd rather default to not taking the risk of being sued, especially by a large organisation like the French government, or a big design company. Therefore, I've requested deletion of my current photos, most of which include public buildings. I have several taken in Moscow and what was then Leningrad, and I see from the Wikipedia page that Russia and former USSR countries don't have FOP - and I certainly don't want to find myself being sued by the Russian government! --LeicesterChris (talk) 00:12, 28 February 2021 (UTC)
