Species epithet

Hi again.

Yes, species cat use lowercase epithets in vegetal and uppercase epithets in animals

I know pretty well birds ad fishes and they all use uppercase epithets.

I was trying to make things homogene when I created those categories.

Authority formatting

Hi Liné1,

Species sort keys

I noticed you've been using uppercase sort keys for species categories. I thought we were supposed to always use lowercase ones (at least that's what I see most people using). Rocket000 (talk) 15:23, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

And I see your reply to a message above. Don't you think we should make it the same for plants and animals? I've made almost all Lepidoptera use lowercase (as well as a few others in Animalia). Luckily I can change most of these all at once by a simple edit to {{Lepidoptera}}, but I'm not sure if we should keep animals different. I personally don't care, but would like consistency. From what I saw, they always use lowercase for plants and almost always uppercase for animals.

Also, someone did scream at me for using lowercase on animal. ;-)

The best would be to find the written/voted rule.

"Category:Unidentified XXX" should be in 2 categories: "Category:XXX" and "Category:Unidentified XXXParent".

Hi Liné - the cat I removed was one that was erroneous, to a completely unrelated family (Alaudidae, a family of birds, while Stylommatophora are snails!). How it got put there in the first place, I can't understand! - MPF (talk) 17:11, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Wikispecies

Supporting our sister project is good, but many of those {{Wikispecies}} you're adding go to non-existent pages... I hardly ever add those templates anymore because we usually have way more information right here. Plus they use some weird/archaic classifications over there and I wouldn't want users trying to make them the same. We follow en.wp closer than wikispecies (and we should too because all those ranks aren't useful for navigation). Rocket000 (talk) 08:33, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

You are right.

I also often prefer en.wikipedia, mostly because they are clearer about their sources.

But for some groups wikispecies are quite accurate. Mostly when they follow specific classifications.

For example, for the mammals, they follow Mammal Species of the World (2005) which is a good source.

For gasterops, they also seem accurate...

As {{Wikispecies}} to non-existent pages, someone told me that it was like a red link, inviting you to create the page...

Yes, for some areas wikispecies is good. And since it's a wiki, they can be the most up to date if someone over there has a special interest in a certain area. For example, the lower ranks of some Lepidoptera families have species that no other online database has yet (taken straight from 2008/2009 bulletins) . But in general, they are still fairly incomplete and regularly use conflicting classifications without mentioning what they are following.

If {{Wikispecies}} actually showed the links as red links, then I would agree with you, however the template says "Wikispecies has information related to:" and that's incorrect/misleading if they don't. :) Rocket000 (talk) 19:13, 16 May 2009 (UTC) P.S. Thylacinus cynocephalus

Hi, I hope you don't mind me commenting here, I find discussion about the sisters very interesting. I noticed you made an edit, I assume that "... is the only living species of family Thylacinidae and genus Thylacinus" was an accident, although fixing it will probably require a longer note. Where do we stop? I see wikipedias as the appropriate place for discussion of the topic, for the reasons you outline above and many others, such as weight, language, and context. I did a bit of work on this gallery a while back, and decided that the inclusion of anything except the files and their titles and sources was problematic. I see things like extinction as appropriate to note, but that is my POV; what if someone disagreed? cygnis insignis 15:15, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Obviously my edit was not an accident.

The idea is simply organizational: When you look at Category:Dasyuromorphia, it should mainly contain family categories. But it also contains a species category.

The note in the species category says "Don't worry, the categories are not buggy, there is no need for a family category nor a genus category as they would contain only one category each".

So the note has to purpose to avoid 2 categories.

But now I need a new term. The web site I am looking at don't interest themself about prehistoric species.

I would like to replace the term "living" by something like "non prehistoric" meaning "I haven't looked at prehistoric oriented web sites".

I moved your category

Hi, Liné1,

I just would like to tell you I moved your Category:Corculum cardissa from Category:Cardiidae into the sub-category Category:Corculum that I created. Since I noticed all sub-categories in Cardiidae were named after genuses, not species, I tried to comply with this reasonable way of organizing things. Hihi, you did it right. I also prefer to have only genus categories in family categories.

But (there is always a but ;-)) some people don't like categories with only one item. Here it is the case: Corculum is monotypic, meaning that it has only one species.

If someone bothers you about this monotypic problem, you can answer that it is very difficult to know if a taxon is monotypic as most of the websites we use (ITIS, Mammal Species of the World (2005)...) are not aware of prehistoric species.

Hum, I haven't thought about that... The thing is, there are some rules for categorisation at the Portuguese Wikipedia saying you cannot create categories for species, and I naively assumed they would be the same anywhere else. As this is not the case, then please, feel free to revert my changes if you want. I'm quite new here, and should've known better than start messing around with other people's work... There is also a french rule against species cat. But here we want to sort articles AND photos. That is why species cat are highly recommended.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

ICUN

Hi Line1. I tried to use the ICUN categorisation that you gave, but sadly, the ICUN list is not quite up to date. I have downloaded a list of South African plants, but they have not all been verified etc. and so don't link as easily as wolves do. e.g. For Moraeas there are about 100 species but only 4 are on the ICUN list to link. Hi. I downloaded a page at http://www.sanbi.org/biodiversity/reddata.htm which says "This Red List represents a complete assessment of all South Africa's indigenous plant taxa. All South African plant taxa have been given a status and should be accounted on this list. If you note any indigenous plant species not included in this list, please inform the Red List Officer (redlist@sanbi.org). The IUCN Categories and Criteria version 3.1 (2001), with additional categories developed specifically for the South African context were used in this Red List. The status given to taxa in this Red List applies only to the section of the global population occurring within South Africa in the case of taxa that are not endemic to South Africa. Status followed by a * indicates non-endemic taxa where the South African national status have been down- or upgraded by one category according to IUCN regional assessment procedures." So where do we go from there? Unless I hear to the contrary, I will put them in Category: Endangered species and give them the listing according to the reddata link which is from the SA Biodiversity Institute. Hi Erica_scabriuscula is listed in the South African list as "least concern" and is not threatened, and would therefore not appear on the ICUN Red List. Try Erica verticillata. There should be Red flags all over the place on the ICUN Red list. - at one time there were only six plants worldwide - 3 in SA, 1 in England, 1 n Germany and one other. Gobius paganellus vs Gobius niger

Hello

the fish of the picture is a spawning male G. paganellus, it is surely recognizable by the absence of elongated rays on the first dorsal fin. The dark colour could seem weird but it is quite common between big males in the spawning season. Regards --Etrusko25 (talk) 13:22, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

There isn't "Common name" article in the Hungarian WP. We have only "Scientific name" article (hu:A fajok tudományos neve), but they are opposites. I translated the string from german ([[:de:Trivialname|Name in den verschiedenen Sprachen]]), but I don't know what would be the correct article name because I didn't find any red or blue link to this. --BáthoryPéter (talk) 12:17, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
