Thanks! It must be the same person, always making helpful edits related to preserved British buses and alternately improving and wreaking havoc on automobile images. Can you discern any sense of logic behind these edits? Michael Barera (talk) 03:51, 7 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

The Gerald R. Ford project edit

Hi Michael. In 2013 you were Wikimedian in Residance at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library in Ann Arbor. Now a similar project is in the stage of proposal. The former president of Nigeria Olusegun Obasanjo founded a library, the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library. There is maybe a chance to have a Wikipedian/Wikimedian in Residence there. It would be so cool and very very helpful if the Wikipedians involved could benefit from your knowledge of being a WiR in a presidential library. Is there a chance that User:Olaniyan Olushola from Nigeria and me (from Germany) could get in contact with you, for instance via a skype or Google hangout conversation? We would appreaciate it very much. Best regards, --Gereon K. (talk) 20:08, 13 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Yes, absolutely, Gereon and Olaniyan! A Google Hangout conversation would work well for me on a Saturday or a Sunday, although considering the time differences between our three countries we'll have to find a time (in UTC) that works for all of us. Maybe a Saturday/Sunday evening in Africa/Europe, which would be midday or early afternoon in North America? If you can propose two or three times that work for both of you, I should be able to make at least one of them work. Thanks! Michael Barera (talk) 21:26, 13 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
That is great. Thank you for the opportunity. Since I will be at a conference in Berlin next weekend and in London the weekend after, I was suggesting to Olushola that maybe we could to it tonight? I trust that you are in Texas (UTC -6). He and me are in UTC +1 (Nigeria and Germany). I try to reach him to propose tonight at maybe 10 pm our time and 3 pm your time? Cheers, --Gereon K. (talk) 08:14, 14 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
Can you find me under Gereon Kalkuhl or gkalkuhl@googlemail.com? --Gereon K. (talk) 14:01, 14 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

File:LDWA Logo.jpg edit

I already emailed copy of a written permission to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org on 17 March. Ticket#: 2016031710018834. The file had been deleted. I'd be grateful if someone could restore it, please--Wikip~enwiki (talk) 08:07, 19 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for the hassle, Wikip~enwiki. I've contacted the administrator who deleted the file in question (Christian Ferrer), which I indeed tagged as missing permission, because administrators have the power to "delete and undelete images and other uploaded files" (I am not an administrator). Hopefully we are able to resolve this for you quickly. Again, I'm sorry about the hassle, and thanks so much for your contributions to Wikimedia Commons! Modified automobiles edit

Hi Michael, I was just planning to open a new category for modified Sunbeam Tiger cars. I notice Mr Choppers made (some years ago) a category Category:Ford Mustang III modified. You would still prefer the style Modified Sunbeam Tiger automobiles / Modified Sunbeam Tiger / something else? Regards, Eddaido (talk) 10:47, 21 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Eddaido. I'd personally prefer either "Ford Mustang III (modified)", "Modified Ford Mustang III", or "Modified Ford Mustang III automobiles", as I think they flow more naturally than "Ford Mustang III modified", but it isn't a big deal. The more I think about, the more I'm leaning toward "Ford Mustang III (modified)", but again it isn't a big deal. And I think standardization is more important than the exact wording (which could fairly easily be changed by moving categories in the future anyway). Cheers! Michael Barera (talk) 02:40, 22 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
I only asked because you were so sure I was wrong to name new categories Ford automobiles (modified). In fact you reverted my new categories and replaced them with categories with a leading Modified. It's why I asked. In view of the above and consistency should someone now change all the Modified Ford and Chev articles to Ford and Chev (Modified)? See your "I just thought that the naming convention, "Ford automobiles modified", didn't read particularly well, and that maybe "Ford automobiles (modified)" or (perhaps even better) "Modified Ford automobiles" would work better. The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning toward the latter; I think it sounds more natural, to my ear at least. I'd love to create a parent category, but I think naming it "Modified Ford automobiles" might be better than "Ford automobiles modified"." on my talk page. Eddaido (talk) 09:50, 22 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
As you can clearly see by juxtaposing my statements, my opinions are still the same, albeit I hold them less strongly now. To be fair, I'm not very active in the automobile-related categories anymore. The "Ford Mustang III modified" convention still doesn't sound like proper English to me, and I do think that either "Ford Mustang III (modified)" or "Modified Ford Mustang III" are superior to it. But these are only my feelings, and don't let them get in the way of building consensus and generally improving the project. Take care! Michael Barera (talk) 00:14, 23 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
I think we should remain with the leading modified just for consistency. My native English is different from yours and I don't see your concern with the traditional British Army cataloguing style: Typewriter: Typist, for the use of, - the most important thing leads - (which I believe originated in India) and which was used while VW was briefly under British Army control accounting, it was said, for the extraordinary methodicalness of its spare parts organisation, manuals etc, thereby creating one reason for its success but I digress. Sincerely, Eddaido (talk) 08:05, 23 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

No permission? edit

I added a link to the permission on File:Erik Harris.jpg on the bottom? Do you not see it? Leggomygreggo8 (talk) 04:48, 16 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your message, Leggomygreggo8. Please note that I did not tag File:Erik Harris.jpg for lacking permission, and now it has already been deleted by an administrator, so I cannot either confirm or deny its copyright status. I did, however, tag File:Kasim Edebali sacking Matthew Stafford.jpeg and File:Erik Harris returning an interception.jpeg due to lacking permission; the former needs permission from the AP photographer who took it (please note the image metadata at the bottom of the page), while both of them link to a webpage that is currently down which I believe to have only stated that materials published prior to 1923 are in the public domain and thus freely usable. These two photographs are contemporary and thus not affected by such a copyright statement. If you believe I am wrong in my assessment, please provide me with substantive proof that these images are indeed, as you claim, allowed for free use. Thanks! Michael Barera (talk) 00:20, 18 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thank you Michael Barera The photos which I require have been given permission by the owner and creator ACF Fiorentina to publish pictures and .pdf files from their archive. Please see ticket: [Ticket#: 2016030710012501]. I can also forward the email to you with pleasure. Thank you. Yours sincerely 11lionsd 2:30, 195 March 2016 (UTC)

Thank you, 11lionsd. The ticket number is for OTRS, correct? If it is, I can help you implement the {{PermissionOTRS}} template on the photos requiring permission. Thanks again! Michael Barera (talk) 02:35, 19 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thank you Michael the ticket number is correct but for some reason the photo had been deleted again. I have full permission that can be verified by Wikipedia. Could you help please? Thank you! 11lionsd (talk) 18:23, 25 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the message, 11lionsd. Unfortunately, because I am not an administrator (they have the power to "delete and undelete images and other uploaded files"), I am not able to restore the deleted images. You can resolve this issue one of two ways:
  1. You can apply for undeletion here, and wait for an administrator to handle your request (I don't have a sense for how long that would take).
  2. You can reupload the files that were deleted with the wikicode {{PermissionOTRS|2016030710012501}} used in the information/description section (this will likely be more work for you, but also probably quicker; if you go this route, I can help you once you upload the files).
I'll let you decide whichever method you prefer. If you need more assistance from me, just let me know. All the best! Michael Barera (talk) 19:07, 25 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thank you Michael Barera once again for all of your assistance, Yours sincerely 11lionsd 19:23, 25 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Media File edit

I used photos from http://www.ana.ir/ and http://www.tasnimnews.com/. They both state that they give permission for any use of photo, if it is cited. In fact all the News Agency's allow the use of photo because that is their job; to release a photo for a good use. This is from Tasnim news, "All Content by Tasnim News Agency is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License." Per this discussion, all images without explicitly watermarked attribution to agency photographers are presumed to be outside this license. Which means that they give the right to use the photos. Thank you, please reply soon. --Hockeysoccertennis (talk) 19:16, 9 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Are you sure that this applies to photographs as well, not just the textual content on the sites? If so, can you point me to the text or license that explicitly releases each photograph under a free license like the CC BY 4.0? Thanks! Michael Barera (talk) 13:04, 10 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Photo requests in Dallas and Commerce edit

Do you do photo requests in Dallas and Commerce? If so, may I suggest some places to photograph?

Thank you, WhisperToMe (talk) 19:34, 16 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Definitely in Commerce, probably in Dallas, depending on exact location. Michael Barera (talk) 00:26, 17 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
Awesome! Based on some category searches, I'll suggest for Commerce:
Commerce Independent School District headquarters: 3315 Washington St., Commerce, Texas 75428
Commerce High School: 3800 Sregit Drive, Commerce, TX 75428
Commerce Middle School: 606 Culver St., Commerce, TX 75428
A.C. Williams Elementary School: 615 Culver St., Commerce, TX 75428
Commerce Elementary School: 3315 Washington Street, Commerce, TX 75428
For Dallas are there any parts of the metroplex you do? I can generate lists based on municipality, but these are my most wanted from the DFW metroplex:
Dallas Independent School District headquarters: 3700 Ross Ave, Dallas, TX 75204
American Airlines corporate headquarters: CentrePort: 4333 Amon Carter Boulevard Fort Worth, TX 76155 (this is south of DFW airport - a new HQ building will open soon but it's good to have the old one too)
Public library buildings in Dallas
Headquarters of other school districts
Various high schools in the DFW area and some elementary schools and middle schools in smaller municipalities
WhisperToMe (talk) 03:24, 17 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

The Commerce Independent School District buildings will be easy for me (and were actually on my to-do list for this summer). When I go to the DFW Metroplex, which I try to do once a month or every other month, I generally take a daytrip to an individual neighborhood or suburb. I'll definitely keep my eyes peeled for public libraries and schools when I go, but I realistically won't be able to make a systematic sweep of libraries or schools in Dallas or the Metroplex more broadly. Hopefully what I can get is helpful, though. Michael Barera (talk) 03:37, 17 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Sounds great! I can suggest particular neighborhoods/suburbs, particularly those on the East side, if you like. There's also a Spanish-speaking Wikipedian close to Garland (User:Frj123) who might get photos on his end. WhisperToMe (talk) 03:44, 17 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
I'd definitely be open to suggestions. I have Oak Cliff, the SMU campus, Frisco, and Fair Park/South Dallas all on my radar, but as long as there is a critical mass of sights within a reasonable walking distance of a DART Light Rail station, I'm all ears. Michael Barera (talk) 03:50, 17 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
For SMU maybe University Park, Texas (including en:Highland Park Independent School District campuses)?
  • City Hall: 3800 University Blvd., University Park, TX 75205
  • Peek Service Center - 4420 Worcola Street, Dallas, TX 75206
  • Public Library: 8383 Preston Center Plaza, Suite 200, University Park, TX 75225

I'll definitely consider doing that trip as a combined University Park/Highland Park trip, just based on your comments. Thanks, WhisperToMe! Michael Barera (talk) 04:07, 17 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome :) - It may help to know how far you are willing to walk: While I have ideas for outer suburbs on DART too the places may be far distances from the stations
Also I found Addison is accessible from the en:Addison Transit Center (bus station). My ideas for that place:
  • City hall: 5300 Belt Line Road, Dallas, TX 75254-7606
  • George Bush Elementary School and the Loos Stadium (Dallas ISD): 3939 Spring Valley Rd, Addison, TX 75001, United States
  • Greenhill School: 4141 Spring Valley Rd., Addison, TX 75001
WhisperToMe (talk) 04:11, 17 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Isn't en:Vickery Meadow on one of the DART lines? If so...

  • en:Emmett J. Conrad High School - 7502 Fair Oaks Ave., Dallas, TX 75231
  • Sam Tasby Middle School: 7001 Fair Oaks Ave., Dallas, TX 75231
  • Jack Lowe, Sr. Elementary School: 7000 Holly Hill Drive Dallas, TX 75231
  • Lee A. McShan Elementary School: 8307 Meadow Road, Dallas, TX 75231
  • Jill Stone Elementary School at Vickery Meadow: 6606 Ridgecrest Road, Dallas, TX 75231

Lakewood (probably can be reached by bus):

  • Lakewood Elementary School - 3000 Hillbrook St., Dallas, TX 75214
  • William Lipscomb Elementary School - 5801 Worth Street, Dallas, TX 75214
  • Dallas Public Library Lakewood Library - 6121 Worth Street, 75214
  • J. L. Long Middle School - 6116 Reiger Avenue, Dallas, TX 75214 (additional photos)
  • Woodrow Wilson High School - 100 S. Glasgow Rd. Dallas, Texas 75214 (additional photos)

Preston Hollow area (probably can be reached on DART bus lines but I don't know how much is feasible - if you have to pick which ones I guess do the Estate area first)

  • Pershing Elementary School (Old Preston hollow): 5715 Meaders Ln, Dallas, TX 75229, United States
  • Walnut Hill Elementary School (near Old Preston Hollow): 10115 Midway Rd., Dallas, TX 75229
  • Harry Withers Elementary School - 3959 Northaven Rd, Dallas, TX 75229, United States
  • St. Mark's School of Texas - 10600 Preston Road, Dallas, TX 75230
  • Ursuline Academy of Dallas (near Old Preston Hollow): 4900 Walnut Hill Ln., Dallas, TX 75229

  • Preston Hollow Elementary School 6423 Walnut Hill Lane, Dallas, Texas 75230 (Preston Hollow North, in the newer area of Preston Hollow)
  • Near Walnut Hill ES:
    • Cary Middle School - 3978 Killion Dr, Dallas, TX 75229, United States
    • Thomas Jefferson High School - 4001 Walnut Hill Ln, Dallas, TX 75229, United States (additional pictures)
  • Near Preston Hollow ES:
    • Benjamin Franklin Middle School: 6920 Meadow Rd, Dallas, TX 75230, United States
    • Hillcrest High School (Dallas) - 9924 Hillcrest Rd, Dallas, TX 75230, United States (additional pictures)
  • George Bannerman Dealey Montessori Vanguard and International Academy - 6501 Royal Ln, Dallas, TX 75230, United States
  • Dallas Public Library Preston Royal Branch Library - 5626 Royal Ln, Dallas, TX 75229, United States

Preston Hollow Elementary, Ben Franklin, and Hillcrest are kind of close to Vickery Meadow so if any DART stations are convenient to Vickery Meadow you could use those to get to those schools WhisperToMe (talk) 10:50, 17 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

I'll definitely consider these, but most of them seem off the beaten path for me. I can definitely get you the Commerce ISD photos, though, probably in the next couple of months. Take care! Michael Barera (talk) 01:22, 18 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Avantis edit

Hi Michael! I just made one category for all of the various Avanti manufacturing successor companies - if it gets too cluttered maybe we will have to split them up into the various eras? Cheers, mr.choppers (talk)-en- 15:17, 22 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Either that or by year. I don't think we'll have to worry about that for some time, though, if ever. Thanks so much for all your hard work! Michael Barera (talk) 02:40, 23 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

De Soto cars on postcard edit

Hi, could you take a look at File:Dutch_O'Neal_Motors_Inc.,_3939_Tulane_Ave._(8185141969).jpg to see if you can recognize date of cars? I'd think start of the 1940s, but you seem better at car recognition. Cheers. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 17:19, 21 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Great question, Infrogmation! I'm actually thinking that these are late 1940s cars. The three from the center-left to center foreground (green, red, and blue in color, respectively) appear to be Plymouths with model years between 1946 and 1949. Their grills really seem to give it away. The center-right foreground car (green in color) appears to be a De Soto of roughly the same vintage (I'm guessing between 1946 and 1950). Admittedly, I'm not very good at identification, though, and I'd recommend that you flip through our "automobiles by year by brand" categories to try to confirm or deny my thoughts on this.
I do think that it is safe to say that most of the cars in the image are Plymouths or De Sotos, though; that is what the dealership (apparently) sold, and the lines and grills of the cars (in the foreground at least) do seem to match up. In the background there appear to be some older cars, one of which is probably from the late 1930s or early 1940s (the blue car in the background, second from the left). I hope that this helps! Michael Barera (talk) 04:55, 24 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
The (new?) cars under the tent are 1951 models, the rest are like Michael says, a collection of used vehicles. Eddaido (talk) 12:04, 26 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

HPISD photos edit

Thank you so much for taking the Highland Park, Sherman, Bonham, and Sherman photos. They are very, very useful! I've further categorized them and made other changes (one thing I need to do is further note that HP Middle/McCulloch Intermediate is actually in both HP and UP as the border cuts through the property - it was previously only in HP but was expanded into UP)

By chance did you get the HPISD admin building at 7015 Westchester Dr., Dallas, TX 75205-1061? If so that would be very nice to have as well. (I checked back and realized I had forgotten to add it to the list :( ) WhisperToMe (talk) 17:17, 1 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

My pleasure, WhisperToMe! I didn't take a photo of the Highland Park ISD administration building, though; I missed it by just a block (it is just north of Highlander Stadium) because I didn't have it on my map of places to see. Sorry. Michael Barera (talk) 20:01, 3 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
It's alright :) - You've done great work!
Anyway I have another to add to the list (aside from HPISD HQ) and that is the en:Dallas International School - 6039 Churchill Way Dallas, Texas 75230 - It is the French school of Dallas and the only "international" (using a non-US, other than IB curriculum) school in DFW. The pic would be useful on both ENwiki and FRwiki
WhisperToMe (talk) 06:29, 4 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
To be honest, I'm not planning a trip to North Dallas, but if I do go I'll be sure to put the Dallas International School on my to-do list. Thanks, WhisperToMe! Michael Barera (talk) 12:08, 4 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
Ok! If you want a photo list for anywhere else you're going I can make one :) WhisperToMe (talk) 12:54, 4 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

One image edit

Hello. This image would look great if it was cropped to a panorama, then added across the bottom of the article. Your call. Cheers. Magnolia677 (talk) 13:08, 12 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

I like what you're thinking. How about we create a derivative image with CropTool, the way I created this crop as a separate file from this original image. I'll let you do the cropping so you can get it exactly how you want it. Does this sound alright with you? Michael Barera (talk) 03:30, 14 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
I think panoramas really enhance Wikipedia articles. They are highly informative and visually stunning, but lack the artsyness that is undesirable in Wikipedia photos. Look at my photo at W:Hoohoo, West Virginia, or the panorama I added to w:John F. Kennedy International Airport. I'm confused about the derivative image. Will you upload the original under a new file name, and then I will crop and edit the image? Thanks! Magnolia677 (talk) 12:59, 14 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Looks great. I'll add that to the article. Thanks! Magnolia677 (talk) 11:07, 18 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
