First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|correct name}}
  • For more information read the full deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hello Mjpresson,

the following content you uploaded is not free and therefore has been or will soon be deleted:

Image:Oexorcismonegro.jpg

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files which can be used for any purpose, including:

  • use in any work, regardless of content
  • creation of derivative works
  • commercial use
  • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on the Wikimedia Commons. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on the Wikimedia Commons: "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload works you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial to understanding how the Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions. --dave pape (talk) 02:15, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

The reason I deleted it was that it was a "fair use" image. The admins who said a low-res version of the poster is okay would have been referring to the fact that fair-use (aka non-free-content) is allowed on the English wikipedia, and a few other wikipedias. Commons does not allow fair use (see Commons:Licensing) because it must serve all Wikimedia projects, not just en.wp, and so only free content can be uploaded here. With a fair use image, you have to upload it to the specific project where you're going to use it, assuming it's allowed by the project. --dave pape (talk) 02:31, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Categories

edit

Re this edit undoing one of my edits, which I presume is what you left a message on my talk page about: It looks to me like you are putting in redundant categories. However, if I mistaken, please explain and clarify. (Eg, I guess an image could be both in Category:Cannabis AND Category:Medical cannabis IF the image shows cannabis, some of which is medical, and some of which is not. Is this the case in this photo? Why is it necessary to specify Category:Cannabis smoking AND Category Cannabis smoking equipment? Is something visible in the photo cannabis smoking equipment, and something else shown in the photo shows an aspect of cannabis smoking which is unconnected to cannabis smoking equipment? ) I was trying to improve accuracy of categorization. If I got something wrong, an explanation and better suggestions are very welcome. Thanks for your attention. Cheers, Infrogmation (talk) 22:45, 18 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

PS: On the same subject, is there any aspect of cannabis shown in File:A-melt Trainwreck Bubble Hash.jpg which is NOT covered within Category:Hashish? If so, please explain; if the only aspect of cannabis illustrated in that photo is hashish, then it should not also be in Category:Cannabis. Dig? Cheers, Infrogmation (talk) 22:54, 18 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Simply hashish is made from cannabis, I don't see that the category would be an issue to anyone not on a crusade or nit-picking. I don't care but I've never removed content from a WM project without explaining why in a summary. Anyway, have fun "improving" things. Cheers.Mike P (talk) 23:11, 18 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Everything pictured is Medical cannabis produced at and for a medical facility. I hope Commons isn't as trying as WP can get. I'm just donating my time and effort and I'm not promoting anything. Mike P (talk) 23:19, 18 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your reply and your work. It looks like you weren't aware of some details of how Commons:Categories work here. Just try to put the most precise and accurate categories on images. Avoid duplication by putting images in "parent categories" (less precise categories that include the more specific category inside them) -- for example, a photo of the Lincoln Memorial goes in Category:Lincoln Memorial, and one doesn't need to also add Category:Washington, D.C., Category:United States, and Category:North America. I hope this is clear. If you have questions you can't find an answer to on Commons explanation pages, feel free to ask. I hope you now understand what I was doing with categories on some of your images -- not "removing content" but improving accuracy. If you think I got something wrong, again, don't hesitate to say. Cheers, [[User:|Infrogmation]] (talk) 02:22, 19 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

That's cool, you've certainly been here longer than me. Mike P (talk) 02:28, 19 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Infrogmation, go ahead and do as you wish with these. Does it take an admin to change a file name? I'm wishing I has just named them simply "American hashish (1)", ect with sequential numbers in the parenthesis and put the info in the description. Mike P (talk) 03:57, 19 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
You can tag images {{Rename}} with the suggested new name and reason; eg {{Rename|American medical hashish.jpg|More accurate name}}. See Commons:File renaming for details. Cheers, Infrogmation (talk) 17:12, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
OK, thanks for responding. Mike P (talk) 17:41, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hi just to let you know that your move request are all complete. Have a nice day :) --Ben.MQ (talk) 16:07, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
