Hello, Orrling!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:Plastico.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please stop abusing user's honest work. I was now tagged "mis-licensed" regarding my recent upload, just because I have no other way but honesty and follow all superior legal guidelines thus have picked the "from somewhere else"-choice, following it by detailing all I had to demonstrate my full authorization.

Please take your tag back, as it is wrongly put. Please consider other steps such as READING THE GIVEN NOTES IN THE FILE, directing me how to correct-tag it, and otherwise manners of using your 'authority' within this collaborative, voluntary, project in which I'm a loyal member.

I'll be so sad if regardless of all my true efforts in attaining the picture [Image:Korzits-in-spain.jpg] and its permittives it will be deleted, and the very same applies to Image:Plastico.

Help, Don't Delete. /Ooh (talk) 10:22, 5 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'm not a lawyer but as far as I know copyright holder is the one who stood behind the camera and pressed the button. --UrLunkwill (talk) 11:20, 5 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Not true in this case! All rights are Ms. Korzits', who stood at the OTHER side of the camera than the one you have meant! :-) /Ooh (talk) 11:28, 5 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
and he/she surrenders all rights for this image for any use except for commercial. That's not acceptable at Commons. The author must give a free license. This includes commercial use. See Commons:Licensing. In the license tag you wrote that you are the copyright holder. That's not true.
The copyright holder has to send an email to permissions-commons-de@wikimedia.org. You can use the template. If you have a permission by email you have to send this email.
And last but not least: I won't delete the image. This will be done by an admin after seven days. If you give the needed permission after deletion it's no problem. The image will be restored. --UrLunkwill (talk) 10:40, 5 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. But please, try to understand: it's a world-level sportswoman busy practicing and competing... She (or her mother with whom I corresponded and who holds the permission for the image and has surrenderred it to us Wikipedians) will not bother to intervene in whatsoever wiki inner-mess, this is really infeasible.... This is exactly why I had priorly asked Ms. Korzits to MAIL ME her consent, which she has enclosed along with the picture. Will it do, if I (for example) bring here or elsewhere that hebrew-written mail? Or what other way can you allow that the picture be prooflicensed? /Ooh (talk) 11:17, 5 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
I don't know if a hebrew email is good enough, but I think so. You can try. I am not envolved in this procedure. I'm a normal user without special rights. You can also read Commons:OTRS about the procedure. I searched a bit and found that User:Avraham is an admin, a member of the OTRS team and speaks Hebrew. So I would try to contact him. --UrLunkwill (talk) 11:36, 5 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
You're very helpful tanks! Ooh (talk) 11:40, 5 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
I gave you the wrong (the German) email address. The correct addresse is permissions-commons@wikimedia.org.
I dont't want the image to be deleted. I believe you that you have the permission. But this must be tracked in the OTRS system. --UrLunkwill (talk) 14:07, 5 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
I trust you too. No worry. I wouldn't any way mail but to the regular permission-mailbox as I have done already twice yesterday with those two pics above us (no reply yet). I just want my uploads to stay intact as at the end of the day I do this whole work for millions of readers and not solely for myself.. :) We need to be more trustful with one another, also when it concerns files one explicitly articulates he has the right to surrender them for the sake of Wikipedia. /Ooh (talk) 14:40, 5 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:
 • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
 • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
 • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
 • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
 • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

This message was added automatically by Nikbot, if you need some help about it, please use the Commons:Help desk. --Filnik 00:20, 10 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi dear bot, please delete the above stated image, as it was replaced by another, better-cropped (this one). Thanks! /Orrling (talk) 03:24, 10 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Moved from User talk:Saibo Hi, Thanks for helping bettering my upploads! I understand you have used the original big image (that one I had asked to delete) as source for the newer one. Ok. But, it's a shame the left strap is missing now. The reason why I originally would ask to delete the first big one is the ugly traffic pole along the left side; then I cropped it as a screenshot which led to a low resolution image... The point is that when you recropped, you omitted not only the dark border but a "pure" part of the crossroad too. Could I ask you to redo it plz, now without taking off that little part?... :) (See my low-res version as "limit model") Thanks a lot. /Orrling (talk) 03:48, 10 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

(moved from my talk to keep this together)
You did intentionally include the left "strap" / grey thing / pole? I will fix it if you want. I thought it looks ugly and therefore did not include it. ;) You want it to be included? Really? Then I will redo it - no problem. Just reply here. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 16:29, 10 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hehe... no, no. I was misunderstood, The ugly grey pole SHOULD BE TAKEN OFF, as you did - BUT you SLIGHTLY "overcropped" it the way that even a grey-free part of the crossroad was now cut away, to which I (personally) am sensitive.. as I think that little piece features a bit of the other side of the separation line in the middle of the road. --- Again - you can safely cut off the major part of the ugly pole and still leave-in the piece of the junction that I refer to. See my low-resolution version so you get the crop-limits. (If I had photoshop I would have cropped it myself) Thanks a lot - Cheerz, /Orrling (talk) 16:41, 10 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Redone using GIMP (not the unfree photoshop ;-) ). Better now? Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 00:07, 11 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hehe... This is so very much better now for me. Thank you! :-)) Cheerz /Orrling (talk) 01:00, 11 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
P.S. looks like you may now delete the original (the one in the title).... /Orrling (talk) 01:01, 11 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
No disk space is recovered by deleting. Maybe someone likes grey things on the left to show how ugly crossroads can look like. ;-) I would like to leave it as is. Both images are liked with each other. Maybe we have a better "version management system" in the future (to kind of hide the old versions from categories). Well, of course we could just uncategorize the original but as of now this is not usual. The "problem" with several versions occurs with all derivative works / improved versions if not uploaded as a new version (which should be avoided).
I really recommend GIMP. :-) If you need help in it - feel free to ask. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 02:30, 11 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Great, thanks a lot. ...And.... I WOULD uncategorize the original :) /Orrling (talk) 11:00, 11 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Creative Rights

edit

Hi. If you are knowledgible of rights issues, would you please carefully check my two recent uploads: this and this, and inform me if everything is correct with that license-thing and if it's alright to use these two scans on Wikipedia, given that in both cases the person showing in the images has yielded all rights of use to us on Wiki. Thank you, /Orrling (talk) 03:03, 16 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

What's required is authorization from the person who took the photographs, not the person depicted. In Israel, currently photos taken in 1960 or earlier have expired copyright. Stifle (talk) 12:39, 18 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
This seems to have been a cross posting (User_talk:Saibo#Creative_Rights) - Orrling, please do not ask the same at several places. That is wasting time. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 16:07, 18 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
To keep the discussion in one place: moved from my talk to here:

Hi Orrling, thanks for asking!
@File:Eban and Spiro.jpg: the image is way too young to be public domain due to copyright expiration (the license tag you have added currently). We need written (e-mail/scanned printout) permission (see COM:OTRS) from the photographer (and from the persons shown - but written form is not needed).
@File:Gideon Spiro 02.jpg: written permission from Zohar Dori needed. In addition you should assert that Spiro does agree to publication (just write it in the file's description to make it perfect. In general files should only be uploaded with agreement from the depicted persons so this is usually assumed if there is nothing contrary to it). Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 20:38, 16 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks very much. The one and only person I have available for all these matters is mr Spiro himself, depicted in both images; no prospect as far as I'm concerned to find and contact the photographers.. It's sad because Spiro told me "I yield all rights of use to you over these pictures" and "They are all free", and I knew just that would never be enough. Well, if he, Spiro, asserts (trustworthy) that he hold all copyrights on these images it is (probably) okay, too. To be honest, I doubt he does. But if, he should please send an email using the template COM:OTRS#Declaration_of_consent_for_all_enquiries Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 00:27, 18 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Be sure to add a license (seems you missed to choose one during upload process). ;-) Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 18:12, 26 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Oh shame on my head. It is quite strange - how would the upload interface let one complete an upload process leaving the licence field undone? I thought that was impossible. Plz see if it's correct now. Thanx, /Orrling (talk)
Didn't it show a warning? Well - that is the old form. ;) That is the good thing about it. We are getting many wrong "own work" claims with a creative commons license due to the uplaod wizard because you only need to click next, next, next.
Now it is right. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 22:57, 26 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
