First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Why you add category Category:Jerusalem to Image:MinzarHamatzleva ST 04.jpg if that phoyo is also in Category:Buildings in Jerusalem ? Why you add a Category:Buildings in Jerusalem if that photo is aleredy in Category:Monastery of the Cross who are in Category:Buildings in Jerusalem ?

because "minzar hamatzleva" and the valy it is in are much more general than "Monastery of the Cross" and many would look for it without even knowing it's the Monastery of the Cross. it's a known part of the view of Jerusalem. It would be nice if would have sign at the end of your note next time. ST 20:33, 10 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Ok - but you add a high and low lewel category.

Deletion request

edit

Hi, just as an FYI: if you have uploaded the same image twice, and you want to delete one of them, you can use {{duplicate|Image:name of other file.ext}}. This nominates it for speedy deletion ({{delete}} is for ordinary deletion on Commons). I have changed the template for Image:Shivta01.JPG and Image:Shivta02.jpg, referencing Image:Shivta01 ST 05.JPG and Image:Shivta02 ST 05.JPG. (And excuses if you knew that already). Kind regards, Deadstar 18:29, 15 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

use and attribution of two of your Globe theater photos

edit

Dear Ms. Inbar, I am using and citing two of your photos inside the Globe theater, one in portrait orientation and mostly of the audience and one in landscape orientation showing three actors and the audience. They are being used in a digital lesson plan on drama in order to emphasize that live audience is an integral requirement of drama. The part of the lesson in which your photos will be placed is the introductionary PPT presentation. I am writing the lesson plans for a company in Puerto Rico that will provide the plans to teachers using a lesson distribution software. Attribution of your work will be on the slide the photos are on.

I have not altered the photos except in size - Thanks.

Further to our conversation by SMS: I used your photo as the basis for design of a logo of a software business that I'm trying to set up. I will be glad to e-mail you a copy, if you want to see what it looks like. Unfortunately, the link at the top of your user page takes me to your Hebrew talk page, where my global Wikimedia login does not seem to work. If you wish, you can e-mail me here and I will send it to you in a reply.

One way of giving you attribution would be to have a page on the company website (which does not yet exist) titled "About our logo", and which would include the original photo, with a proper photo credit and a link to your page on Wikimedia Commons, and a brief explanation that the logo was "inspired by" your photograph. I would also write clearly that this use of your work does not imply that you endorse our company or its products. Alternatively, given that the logo is, of course, much more abstract than the photo, you might decide that you would rather not be mentioned in connection with it at all. Or you may have a better idea. I want to do whatever you think is appropriate. Please let me know what you prefer. Davidhof (talk) 20:34, 10 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Permission Request

edit

Hi,

Hello. I work for Oxford University Press. I am working on an OUP UK textbook The Oxford Illustrated History of the Crusades Edition 2

In our book we would like to use a photo that we found in the below URL;

File:MinzarHamatzleva ST 04.jpg - Wikimedia Commons

Would you be able to license this to us and provide us with a hi-res image version (minimum 300 DPI) along with credit line information of the image ?

We have a deadline fast-approaching, so it would help a great deal if you are able to consider this request and provide the image files promptly.

Botanical garden in Ein Gedi

edit

Thank you so much for your photo of the Botanical garden at Ein Gedi (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:EinGedi02_ST_06.jpg). I'm including it in a collection of photos documenting Bible Lands at https://www.pastordaniel.net/vbsproject/ . I'd be curious if you have any higher resolution version of the photo? I did some light retouching of the colors and upscaled the existing photo for our collection. Databases (talk) 03:07, 23 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
