Hello, TheAustinMan!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Thanks for uploading File:SXSW Logo.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

storm data

I was wondering how you went about accessing the storm data report used for the 1982 Hurricane Debby satellite image, as I have been trying to find more of these with no success.

Hello! Storm Data Publications can all be listed here at http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/IPS/sd/sd.html. (I posted the full link so that you would see what the site was) If you're accessing this page for the first time it may take some time to load the page, since it first has to validate your IP. Once you've made your first connection with the site succeeding connections should not take as long. Good luck! TheAustinMan (talk) 00:49, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

Awesome, thank you!

Could you please provide the source? -- Meow 12:56, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

On date formats...

...YYYY-MM-DD (or YYYY.MM.DD) is the best possible date format for files on Wikimedia Commons because that format will sort properly in almost all situations, while DMY is the most inferior format. MDY is a bit in between, but it is already the most commonly used among these files, and the majority of storms do not occur over more than one month, so it is preferable to DMY which will not do well if there are images from more than a single day. Maysak seen from the ISS 6.jpg

Did you edit the picture from a JPEG file, or a raw NEF file? -- Meow 21:02, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

I used the JPEG that I linked in the source. TheAustinMan (talk) 21:40, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
How about that TIFF file? -- Meow 13:24, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
I didn't edit the TIFF file. I opened the NEF file using UFRaw which created a .ppm file; I then opened that one with GIMP and exported as a TIFF. That may have changed something, but I didn't make any edits. TheAustinMan (talk) 02:27, 8 April 2015 (UTC)
Could you explain how you modified the picture to the JPEG file? -- Meow 16:29, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

Reminder: Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2016 is open!

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2016 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear TheAustinMan,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eleventh edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.

A barnstar for you!

For your excellent work in photography and image development, and for the colored image of Hurricane Linda that you've generated (included in this barnstar). I've always wanted a high-quality color image like that one for Linda.   Great Job! BlueHypercane761 (talk) 23:46, 24 March 2018 (UTC)

GOES images question.

Hello, I was wondering how you make these awesome colored GOES images from the '90s. I know how to make them but they usually aren't great. Do you think you can teach me how to make colored GOES images like how you do it? Thanks! --SaiTheCyclone (talk) 02:24, 25 May 2019 (UTC)SaiTheCyclone

Tornado track map

Hey! I was wondering if you could upload a newer version of File:March 2–3, 2020 tornado outbreak warnings and reports.png. There have been some updated surveys in Tennessee. United States Man (talk) 21:23, 9 March 2020 (UTC)
