Your adding of FPX

edit

Hi Thomas! I see you have just joined the FPC project. I hope you like it here. I also saw you added a FPX template to my nomination. About FPX: it is used only in very clear-cut cases, when it is obvious the picture will fail. If it is not, as I think is the case here, then please use {{Oppose}} instead. Thank you! --The High Fin Sperm Whale 19:44, 25 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Re: Cameras

edit

Depends. With a point-and-shoot, the camera makes almost all of the decisions (ISO, exposure, etc.), so the quality is mostly decided by the camera. With a DSLR, many controls have manual override, so you can change the quality. Quality is also affected by light; low-light photos are more difficult than those in good light. Point-and-shoot quality is typically much worse than a DSLR. And remeber, the lower the ISO, the higher the quality. Please ask if you have any more questions. Cheers, --The High Fin Sperm Whale 21:34, 25 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Oh, and you might want to add your babel boxes below the welcome sign. --The High Fin Sperm Whale 22:42, 25 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I might be missing something here, but it seems to me that you are both opposing and supporting this nomination? Finn Rindahl (talk) 15:32, 26 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I'm weird like that :-)

Re: Getting involved

edit

What would you like to get involved in? I'll help you out on whatever I can but I don't know everything about Commons yet either. Here are some pages that you may find useful to read:

Here are some projects you may be interested in looking into:

And finally, some people that can help you if you're in trouble:

And remember, most pages have instructions on what to do at the top. Happy editing!

One little thing, on the volcano nomination you voted support and oppose. Could you please pick one, and then strike out the other? Thank you! --The High Fin Sperm Whale 17:15, 26 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hmm, I think I might Vote for/against featured picture nominations. I see that you like to do that aswell. Thomas888b (talk) 10:45, 2 November 2010 (GMT)
Yes, I like doing that too. But please remember to give a reason for opposing. and I hate to inform you on this but the meerkat picture you nominated is only 1.4 MP (FPs have to be at least two). Take a look at COM:IG. One other thing: if you strongly support or oppose, you can user either {{SSupport}} or {{SOppose}}, which produces   Strong support or   Strong oppose. Happy FPC voting! --The High Fin Sperm Whale 16:44, 2 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Re: Geocoding

edit

Hi! Take a look at COM:GC. It describes several ways of doing it. Here are Two places for adding geotags:

Find the location with the crosshairs. The coordinates appear on the left. So suppose you get 49° 3' 31" N, 122° 38' 55" W as your coordinates, then add to your image {{Location|49|3|31|N|122|38|55|W}}. I hope this helps. Please tell me if you have any questions! --The High Fin Sperm Whale 21:32, 10 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I worked out ho to use geocoding. :-) I added it to my picture. Thomas888b (talk) 21:35, 10 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Now you (or I, if you want) can nominate it at VIC. --The High Fin Sperm Whale 21:47, 10 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Does it really matter? it obviously isn't good enough for commons? Thomas888b (talk) 21:48, 10 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
It's not that bad. My first pictures weren't as good as it. And with VIC, as long as it is better than the rest of the images within the scope, it can pass. --The High Fin Sperm Whale 23:40, 10 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well, The friendly welcome to the site (Not from you, You have been nice to me) has really convinced me. I shall go and post the photo where it will be appreciated. (I'm not logged in) Thomas888b 12:55 GMT
Well, I do hope that you don't leave Commons. I can identify with you now; all my first FPC noms failed too. --The High Fin Sperm Whale 18:10, 12 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hmm, I'll consider staying, I don't really have a reason to stay. Thomas888b (talk) 21:31, 13 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Comment If you think this would be a good Valued Image, could you please nominate it, as it seems a tad confusing to me, thanks, Thomas888b (talk) 15:21, 14 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Done Sorry for my late reply. I've nominated it. And I do hope you don't quit commons, all my first FPC noms failed too (they still do, most of the time). --The High Fin Sperm Whale 22:29, 18 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

  Comment thanks Thomas888b (talk) 12:04, 20 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Re: My new pic

edit

Hi! i took a look at your image and the quality is quite decent. I am fairly sure it's Calendula officinalis, so I changed the category. I don't think it could survive on QIC or FPC, but it is the only geocoded picture in the category, so it looks like a future valued image to me. I can nominate it on VIC if you're not sure how. If you do, I think I good scope would be

''[[:Category:Calendula officinalis|Calendula officinalis]]'' (Pot marigold), flower

Producing:
Calendula officinalis (Pot marigold), flower
Best regards, --The High Fin Sperm Whale 18:19, 29 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I don't understand how to nominate them, so it would be really lovely if you could do that for me :-). My ore picture failed, but I don't mind as it is my first one. Thanks, Thomas888b (talk) 21:42, 29 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Congratulations, it passed. In a little while the bot will add a valued image tag to the image. --The High Fin Sperm Whale 22:02, 5 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks THFSW Do i get a little star at the top of my user page now? Thanks, Thomas888b (talk) 17:24, 6 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
It's up to you. Those stars are for FPs. This isn't a FP, but a VI. You could add to your userpage:
<div style="position:absolute; z-index:100; right:30px; top:-30px;" class="metadata">
{| style="background-color:transparent;border: 0px"
|-
|[[File:Valued image seal.svg|{{#iferror: {{#expr:25px > 0 }} |25px|25px{{#if:25px|{{#iferror: {{#expr:25px > 0
}}||x25px}}px|px}}}}|link=File:Calendula in Autumn.jpg|This image has been assessed under the valued image criteria
and is considered the most valued image on Commons within the scope: Calendula officinalis (Pot marigold), flower]]
It's a bit complicated, but it will add the VI logo onto your page. It doesn't matter were you put it on your userpage; it will always be in the top right corner. If your not sure if you want to add it then just hit the preview button and see what it looks like. --The High Fin Sperm Whale 18:19, 6 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
thanks THFSW Thomas888b (talk) 19:34, 6 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

QIC

edit

Done It's nominated. Nominating images there is quite simple; just add:

File:IMAGE|{{/Nomination|DESCRIPTION OF IMAGE. --~~~~}}

Your VIC votes

edit

Hi, per Jebulon's request, I changed the scope of Commons:Valued image candidates/HMS Discovery.JPG and Commons:Valued image candidates/HMS Orion (1789).JPG. If you do not reconfirm your vote, it will be cancelled. Regards, --The High Fin Sperm Whale 17:50, 18 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

edit

It's been a while since you requested File:View_from_Stpeters.jpg to be cropped, which is why I write here to inform you that this has been done earlier this month. --Vera (talk) 11:53, 22 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
