Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

WT edit request

Hello,

Do you think you could do these three favors for me, please?

Favor #1: create 石墩 ("a stone block, (especially) a stone block used as the base of a column", illustrated by 石墩06117.jpg and 石墩06137.jpg)

Favor #2: add the definition to 磩. Its zdic.net definition is given as

• 1. [when read qì] 像玉的石："碝～彩致，琳珉青熒。"
• 2. [when read qì] 古通“砌”，臺階："～階用石，冪窗用紙。"
• 3. [when read zhú] 柱下面的石墩。

Favor #3: update 巉 to use the proper ja-readings format and ko-hanja/new. (In case you don't know how: change {{ja-readings|on=[[さん]] (san), [[ざん]] (zan)|kun=}} to {{ja-readings|on=さん,ざん|kun=}}, and then change {{ko-hanja|hangeul=참|rv=cham|mr=ch'am}} to {{ko-hanja|참}}.)

Besides, 老大姐 needs the sense # {{lb|zh|Southern Pinghua}} [[spinster]] and its synonyms {{zh-dial|老處女}} added to it.

And Module:zh/data/dial-syn/鱅魚 really needs the redlink 鰟頭 added to it (along with 鰟頭 being created using {{subst:zh-new|noun|[[bighead carp]] (''[[Hypophthalmichthys nobilis]]'')|syn=鱅魚}} {{zh-cat|Cyprinids}}, of course).

In addition, do you think that Duan Chengshi's folk etymology of 狼狽 was influenced by the term 豺狼 ("the dhole and the wolf")? Because an archaic meaning of the former is "an evil person", and the latter can also be used to mean "an evil person".

Lastly, I want you to translate a couple of Commons images for me.
The first is the phrase "2012年成功嶺營區開放活動，開場青年高中大鼓隊的演出。", which is from File:Youth High School Drums Beating Team in Chengkungling 20121006a.jpg.
The second is: provide all the Chinese text in the image File:Wan Hu large.png, along with its translation, in its description. That will improve the experience for blind or visually impaired users.

And there's this redlink, 打了牙肚裡嚥, which is an idiom meaning "to swallow one's anger; to submit to humiliation" or "to hold back one's anger and say nothing".
There is also 一字入公門，九牛拔不出 (yīzì rù gōngmén ， jiǔ niú bá bùchū, literally "When a word enters the public gate, nine cows can't pull it out") meaning something like how one can't take back what one said publicly. One of its component words, 公門, is also a redlink and is a synonym of yamen.
I also noticed that 果報, Chinese (and Japanese) for karma in Buddhism, needs creation (there's a thing titled "Gongmen guobao lu 公門果報錄 [A Record of Retributions for Yamen Personnel]").
And 挺拔 needs a "Derived terms" section added with 挺拔不群 (tǐngbá bù qún), a redlink meaning "stiff upright and uncommon to all" (that definition, BTW, comes from this 1978 dictionary). Shāntián Tàiláng (talk) 16:09, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

And what about 聯合國教育科學文化組織, a redlink meaning "UNESCO" that got removed from 文化 in this diff? Also removed in that diff were 中國文化大學 ("Chinese Culture University"), 龐畢度國家藝術文化中心 ("Centre Pompidou"), 中華文化復興運動總會 ("Chinese Cultural Renaissance Movement", today known as the General Association of Chinese Culture), and 行政院文化建設委員會 ("Executive Yuan Council for Cultural Affairs", now known as the Ministry of Culture (Taiwan)). @Lugria: There is also the redlink 一勇之夫 which is a literary chengyu meaning "foolhardy", along with the 3 redlinks 勛勞 meaning "meritorious service" (which, incidentally, makes it a synonym of 功勞) and 功均柱地 (a chengyu meaning "outstanding in achievements") and 功均一匡 (another chengyu, meaning "achievements so great they're like unifying the Chinese nation", as in 一匡天下).
Besides, 一統天下 should have 一匡天下 and 功均一匡 under its "See also" section, and all three of those entries should be in Category:zh:One, along with 一勇之夫.
And what the devil does the redlink 九合一匡 mean? It's mentioned in 藝文類聚/卷025, that is, Yiwen Leiju volume 25.
Incidentally, is 一匡 sum-of-parts in Chinese or no? It appears in 九合一匡, 功均一匡, and 一匡天下. And even if it's sum-of-parts in Chinese, in Korean it is another hanja form/definition/etymology of 일광, which is in need of expansion to say so. (That new definition is given as "어지러운 천하를 다스리다 바로잡다", which I think means "to govern rectifying a disoriented world/country".)
Lastly, 春秋時代 really needs Category:zh:History of China and Category:zh:Chinese dynasties added. Shāntián Tàiláng (talk) 17:12, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
