First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Can you tell me, what the main idea behind your edit was?
I'm asking, because the description says "A GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast weapon on display outside the Air Force Armament Museum, Eglin Air Force Base, Florida" and you added "GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast weapon on display outside the Air Force Armament Museum, Eglin Air Force Base, Florida November 9, 2006.". The link to the authors en:page is there and you find the Date under "Date: taken on"

FYI

The "© all rights reserved" notice is always present on fotopic sites, whether the author wishes it or not -- all images I take from there I have email permission for. Dunc| 12:30, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

See my comment on the deletion discussion. The image description didn't say that you had any particular permission beyond what was contained on the site. You should send a copy of the email to OTRS so it can be kept on record. WjBscribe 13:14, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Welcome to adminship

Thanks for rotating Image:Penstemon_clutei2.jpg. Is there a way I can do that when something goes wrong, or do you have to be an administrator or something? —JerryFriedman 14:14, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. I uploaded it under a different name, which is a mistake that I won't make again now that you've explained it, but I did rotate it in my software, and even so the second version uploaded with the same orientation as the first. —JerryFriedman 00:04, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Need Large file Help

Hello WJBscribe,

I have a large file I need uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. It's a 60MB Djvu (multi-page image) of a Public Domain (1917) Bible. It's for a Wikisource project that intends to preserve that relatively difficult to find Bible translation. When I asked #wikimedia-commons, they indicated a ~20MB cap (for most users) and pointed me in your direction indicating you may be able to bypass the 20MB restriction. The file I need uploaded is located at ftp://ia311543.us.archive.org/1/items/holyscripturesac028077mbp/holyscripturesac028077mbp.djvu. The Wiksource project page for this work is located at s:Bible_(Jewish_Publication_Society_1917) Would you please assist me. Send any comments or questions you may have to my Commons user page. Thanks. —Wikijeff 03:32, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Jim McGreevey

Scribe - I don't think this photo is in the public domain Image:Jimmcgreevey.jpg. U.S. public domain applies to works by the federal government, not the state government, and this is from the State of New Jersey. The issue will be moot pretty soon - I'm meeting with McGreevey this afternoon to do a photo shoot with him. --DavidShankbone 18:32, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Deletion of images used in Wikibooks

Hi Will,

I am the author of File:HP possible locations of Godric's Hollow.PNG that was deleted recently. I was a bit disappointed about the deletion. I am sorry I wasn't around for defending it, but I was surprised by your comment in the deletion votes.

"No Wikimedia projects allow OR to be used"

What about wikibooks? They all are original research, since the authors are writing a new book about a particular subject, sometimes in an area that is not fully explored.

For e.g. I am writing a language-learning book in English on the Kapampangan language, which is necessarily original research, since it has never been done before. Should my book be entirely deleted? Or are we not allowed to use the commons to store images for wikibooks? (I was previously receommended to use the commons by other administrators, for the wikibooks, was there a policy change that I missed?). Thanks for you reply. Lgriot 12:41, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Mmm, I confess I had not thought of Wikibooks during the discussion - and know little about that project. You could raise that with the administrator who closed the discussion and deleted the image (User:O) as it did not come up during the discussion. Also, there is of course nothing to stop a copy being hosted on Wikibooks if it is of use there. WjBscribe 17:20, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

OP blocks

Just for interest where did you get the info on those three (I've blocked them in a few places based on trusting you!!)? Cheers --Herby talk thyme 10:45, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

The blocks were based on a discussion on IRC (#en-admins) where several admins where looking at misconfigured spambots making these edits across projects using proxies. I offered to sort out the ones that were found here - deleted the pages and blocked. My only slight hesitation is that I don't know if every IP was checked or whether the conclusion was drawn on the basis that those that were checked were proxies. Seeing as you've blocked elsewhere relying on me, I'll make sure someone double checks them. WjBscribe 16:55, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
Any info on Open Proxies would be appreciated - it's one reason I like to ensure vandal accounts are CU checked - frequently reveals an underlying and active open proxy. On the spammy IPs I found this the other day. Allows you to check IPs for spam activity - some have got quite a history, feel free to past it on. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 07:55, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
Another useful tool here - checkout your favourite spambot IP on this([2]!). I now look before I decide on the block length - cheers --Herby talk thyme 16:37, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
Now that is a clever tool - thanks for the link! WjBscribe 01:41, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

Hum

You obviously have an interest in such things (as I do) so can I point you here. I'd like to get this going again and get something in about CU activity (maybe 'crats too?). Personally I'm a fan of Meta confirmation but I don't know if it would be too much here? My internet access is very patch for a week or so but views more than welcome. I do try and assume good faith but find it hard sometimes!. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 11:31, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

Block

Hi,

My name is Richard Thompson and I understand you have blocked me from opening an account. I further understand that this is because my IP is registered to our Internet provider, Etisalat, the State telecoms company of the UAE. Unfortunately we have no option but to access the internet throgh the Etisalat proxy server which acts as a censor to prevent acces to "inappropriate sites" IE those which criticise the Rulers or have "adult" content.

It appears that as some students at a Lebanese School have inappropriately edited a page the whole of the UAE has been efectively banned from opening accounts and contributing to Wikipedia.

I would ask you to unblock Etislat and, if it is technicaly possible selectively block the Chouifat School.

Thanks and regards.

Richard Thompson

richard.thompson@eim.ae

Hi, I rarely block IP addresses on Wikimedia Commons. Though I see that I have blocked the IP you used to post this message on the English Wikipedia. If you were asking about the block on another IP from editing commons, I need more details. If you are asking about the block of 195.229.236.250 on the English Wikipedia, there are two options:
  1. The block on that IP is due to expire in three days, when you will be free edit from that IP or create an account
  2. If you email me (WJBscribe at gmail dot com) I can create an account for you now and email you a password for it
Unfortunately, it isn't possible for us to block only some users of an IP address and the IP is likely to be blocked again if vandalism resumes. Such blocks don't have any effect on those with accounts, so I strongly encourage you to create one (which is totally free) either in a few days or by emailing me at your convenience. Best wishes, WjBscribe 22:15, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

Permission

I have the e-mail from James W. Johnson of J. W. Johnson Photography that gives me permission to use the images. Do you want me to e-mail it to the e-mail address for OTRS you left on my talk page? What should I do after that? Please let me know by replying to this message on my talk page. Taric25 09:01, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

Yes, please email it to the OTRS address on this page... WjBscribe 09:02, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
OK, I am forwarding the e-mail to the OTRS e-mail address you left on my talk page. Can you please undelete all the images you deleted? Please let me know by replying to this message on my talk page. Taric25 09:09, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
I e-mailed the OTRS address with the permission. The other tags indicated that if permission was not received within seven days they would be deleted, but you deleted some of them right away, contrary to the notices. I do not understand this. Can you please reply to this message on my talk page? Taric25 09:32, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

A litte more cleanup after User:Leopold

Hi WJBscribe. Thanks for cleaning up the mess after User:Leopold. Would you mind to remove the last one as well (Image:Vitt.Alb.Balzarotti.jpg)? Although we've identified the person on the image, it seems like a bad idea to keep it given that the name is misleading and - more importantly - because the uploader has digitally faked a part of the image in order to create the impression that this person was an Italian. If you compare with the original [3], the uploader has blacked out a prominently featuring order on the person's uniform. Happy editing. Valentinian T / C 08:30, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Invite to the "bear pit"

And I thought folk on Commons were nice! Thanks for the thought but Samulili had a reason for the request probably the only rationale that I might come up with would be in connection with the Meta spam blacklist but aspects of that are fairly well covered on en wp at present. Equally although I have quite a few edits on my first name, this one's edits would get laughed out I think. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 12:02, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

Main page images

Hey. I guess you noticed the images at the same time I did. Viewing User:Zzyzx11/En main page enabled cascading protection on all of them. This happens a lot, it seems, since he doesn't always purge/view the page everyday. RockMFR 00:10, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

Ah that explains it - I was sure that when I first looked at the images, the "Links" section didn't show his subpage. I guess I should have checked User:Zzyzx11/En main page first. WjBscribe 00:13, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

OTSR tickets

You mentioned a ticket when you deleted an image. How can I view this ticket? 2007110910014659 Thank you. Jecowa 01:16, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

See m:OTRS for more info. Access to the list is restricted to users who have been approved and are willing to indentify themselves to the Foundation - they are usually admins on one or more Wikimedia project. The jist of the email as it was related to me is that Paramount assert that they hold the copyright over Star Trek ranks and insignia. They accept that the use of them could be fair use - though wish to be pointed to the pages where the insignia are being used. In any event, Commons does not accept fair use images though recreation on local wikis accompanied by valid fair use rationales should be possible. I you want someone with OTRS access to verify the email, you can contact someone listed at m:OTRS/personnel and, if you use IRC, you can find OTRS people in freenode channel #wikimedia-OTRS. WjBscribe 01:52, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for the explanation. Jecowa 06:10, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

Opinion

I'd like your opinion on this image name. Would it be possible to "move" it to a more appropriate name, that editors would find less offensive? While the image is valid, and the name is valid, I'm a bit concerned as to why the editor chose that particular file name, and it has come up on WP within the context of adding it to the page. It is possible that the image is a copyright violation, as no author information was given, and the source cited was "Sereno PC, Wilson JA, Witmer LM, Whitlock JA, Maga A, et al. Structural Extremes in a Cretaceous Dinosaur. PLoS ONE. 2, 11, e1230. 2007. DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0001230", which would appear to me, to be a journal of some kind, with no permission asserted. Regardless, the name is causing issues, so I was wondering if anything could be done to rename it? Thanks! ArielGold 18:16, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

We certainly could rename it. To do that, reupload it at a more appropriate name. Then by click on the "checkusage" tab on the original image, you can change its entry on each Wiki to the new title and I could delete the original once it isn't used anywhere. I agree with you that copyright claim isn't evident - perhaps ask the uploader to clarify why he says the image is CC licensed. If his answer is unsatisfactory you can start a deletion discussion by adding {{Delete}}. WjBscribe 18:28, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
Alright, I have re-uploaded it under the name Image:N. taqueti.png, and clarified that original licensing was unclear, as well as the original uploader, and the inappropriate image name issue. I have replaced the images on all the wikis that were using it, and noticed another image with the same name, Image:Nigga2.JPG, which I guess should also be reuploaded and the old name deleted. The first one can be deleted now, and I'll do the second one and let you know when I'm finished. Thanks for taking care of this! ArielGold 18:53, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
Second image is done. All Wiki image names changed. Note left for uploader on their talk page, requesting they clarify the licensing, and source/author information. Both of the originals can be deleted. Thanks! ArielGold 19:01, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
An editor on :en found the licensing info for the images, [4], so I added that to both, as well. Thanks again! ArielGold 19:19, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for taking part in my Requests for Adminship. The RfA was successful and I am now an administrator here. There were concerns over my temperament from respected editors, and I have taken these concerns on board, with the aim of being a more polite and courteous administrator both here and on the English Wikipedia. If you need help with anything, here or on the English Wikipedia, such as history from deleted images and such, please don't hesitate to shout. My door is always open, so to speak. Wikinews

Hi Scribe. Wikinews has a front page "News in pictures" photo. We aren't always the best at updating it. Wikinews was thinking that there might be a couple of people at Commons who would update the Wikinews front page photo every day or two? If more people are interested, great - then they can vote. I'm not sure where to ask or who to ask. --DavidShankbone 19:33, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

The Village pump is usually the best place for that sort of general notice. That should be the right place for people to volunteer or point you in the right direction. WjBscribe 04:07, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

I'm troubled

By actions such as this when an IP troll has taken to warring against this photograph for some reason, and clearly took it a step further. I was not notified, there was no discussion, it was just deleted despite being used on several pages. --DavidShankbone 17:06, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

Looks like a request was made at OTRS. I don't have access so I'll need to ask someone to look into it. Have you asked Nick for more details? WjBscribe 22:07, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
Yes, Nick is on the case. Sorry to bother you; Commons it can be harder to find someone who is around, so I approached you both. I think it's the Michal Lucas-hating IP who haunted me on WP, posing as the couple (there are still two other photos of them out there). Nick is going to look into it. --DavidShankbone 07:20, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Flickr image review

Hi Will, could you possibly approve two Flickr images I've uploaded? Image:TheMyriad JohnSchofield.jpg and Image:ThousandFootKrutch.jpg. The FlickrReviewR bot couldn't figure out the licensing on both images because of sizing of the images (I had cropped the images from their original Flickr versions), and I've been waiting for a few days now for an administrator/trusted user to take care of them. Could you me so kind as to review the licensing of those images? I'm just beginning to get a little impatient, since Flickr image approval hasn't taken very long for other images I've previously uploaded. Thanks a bunch, JamieS93 21:33, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

Re: Images w/o media

Yeah, I deleted a few pages in CAT:CSD that were just descriptions... I saw no attached media file. It might be a glitch? Monobi (talk) 22:29, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

I saw the text, but I didn't see the image that went with the text... Monobi (talk) 01:06, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the a-posteriori-support of my RfA ;-) Túrelio (talk) 19:22, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Images from Emil Rensing on Flickr

Image deletion warning Images from Emil Rensing on Flickr have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these images, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Thank you for your trust

Dear WJBscribe,
^v^
^v^
Thank you for your support on my request for adminship, here at Commons. Now that I am a new sysop, I plan on starting small, closing obvious (to my eye) deletion requests at first, getting bolder with experience as and when my contributions here intensify. As a contributor, I look forward acquiring professional photography/video skills and equipment, that will allow me, one day, to proudly help Commons to be better (I would like to obtain my Master's degree while in Antarctica, more free videos and photos of this place would be truly great). Waiting for this moment to happen, let me address you once again my warmest thanks for your trust and your support in my successful request for adminship, that received 100% of  support votes.
I do feel the tools given to me will be useful for the project as well as, obviously, for me. And even for you: besides questions regarding templates (about parser functions for example) and licensing, I will be henceforth there at any moment to perform administrative tasks like deletions, interventions on protected pages, and the like. You just have to ask me on my talk page or by IRC at #wikimedia-commons, and I will normally be glad to honor your request.

Hello, WJBscribe. Thank you for supporting me in the request for adminship. Although it hasn't done successfully, I proud that twenty-nine trusted contributors -including you- voted for me. Thank you again for your trust.--OsamaK 14:11, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
