Wikipedia election map editing edit

Dear user, I see you've been extensively revising wikipedia county maps, this is good! However you have been making some mistakes in following the procedure for editing. You've been creating new maps yourself instead of revising the previous map with a new version. Please refrain from doing this as the maps you're creating have white backgrounds and are not in rotation or position alignment with present versions. I'll be going back and revising your edits with the correct map series. If you have any questions feel free to ask myself or any frequent editor. Thanks! Election map editing edit

I know you’ve been updating the shapes on county maps for election results but don’t upload a new file. Just revise the old map with a new version. 2600:1009:B012:C8D7:A45A:FD9A:269A:7235 01:34, 16 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

In order for me to do that, I would need to overwrite them, which I don't have permission to do. Also, why does it matter if it's a new file or not? An updated map is an updated map. ZackCarns (talk) 20:33, 18 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
You can request to overwrite files here https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Overwriting_existing_files/Requests JosephBobilly (talk) 16:01, 21 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
There are so many files that are replaced that it isn’t necessary or it to request an overwrite for it. If it was 1 or 2 files, okay, but the number is far higher than that. ZackCarns (talk) 16:03, 21 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

I would just like to know the source where you get your county maps from. specifically from georgia. JosephBobilly (talk) 02:14, 21 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

I used the maps with the old map style and used inkscape to make maps with the new map style. That is how I did that. I also used the tables that are provided on the pages to make the maps.ZackCarns (talk) 02:25, 21 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

updating maps edit

Hi thanks for helping update the US county maps but please don't needless upload new files, when you can simply just overwrite the original maps we have them already organized under harmonizing file names here on commons, also please keep mind the county boundaries have changed in states you've updated like Ohio https://digital.newberry.org/ahcb/map/map.html#OH please refer to the newberry library for what the county boundaries looks like in the past for accurate maps, thank you Putitonamap98 (talk) 06:27, 23 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Okay with the past boundaries, but I cannot overwrite the original maps due to wikipedia policy change in September that only allow either the original uploader or an autopatroller to overwrite files. I do not have the autopatroller right, so I must do what I have done instead. ZackCarns (talk) 11:28, 23 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
ask for autopatroller rights before updating please because most of your duplicates will just get deleted anyway 104.160.97.110 08:15, 8 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I already have and was denied. And they won't be deleted as the quality of the files I have uploaded are much better than the old files. ZackCarns (talk) 16:36, 8 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Tell them you're regarly updating the maps i had no problem getting approved by telling them that but either way the files with original names will be updated any way using the correct historical county boundaries and duplicates/look a likes with inaccurses are usually deleted from commons 104.160.97.110 13:02, 9 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'll try again, but if it doesn't work, it doesn't matter in the end since the files I'm uploading are of obvious higher quality than the original files and it makes no sense to undo an edit with the files I've uploaded. ZackCarns (talk) 13:15, 9 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Looking again at the minimum requirements for autopatroller, I do not fit the requirements. And to point out what you had said, I do not see a wikipedia rule that would have users overwrite inferior quality images with the exact same file that I already uploaded. It would be stupid for anyone to waste time and energy just to upload the same exact file that has already been uploaded. ZackCarns (talk) 13:20, 9 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
ok i'm just saying we will eventually update the old file names because they are categorized so the new ones might get deleted because they will become duplicates using the non categorized name you use. i do appreciate uploading new maps that don't exist yet but if you do that could you please name the new files like this: 1990 United States Senate election in [state name] results map by county
instead? and please put them under the category United States Senate elections in state (set) instead of the one without the set at end, thank you! Putitonamap98 (talk) 04:47, 12 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I can do that. I'm just trying to help out and improve these pages and I definitely don't want to see my time and other individual's time go to waste. ZackCarns (talk) 12:19, 12 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks and i also appreciate the municipality maps too I've been the only one working on those for awhile so it's nice to have someone else to speed up the process, if you could do more of those that'd be real helpful Putitonamap98 (talk) 16:28, 12 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I wouldn't mine doing more Massachusetts maps, but I would need someone to make a map of Massachusetts municipalities pre-1938 because of the creation of the Quabbin Reservoir that absorbed 4 different towns. If someone can make a map of the the state pre-1938, I can do the 1932 and 1936 Presidential Elections, as well as maps for the gubernatorial and senatorial elections. ZackCarns (talk) 16:32, 12 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ok I'll look into btw just wanted let you know you almost have the file names right its just county, map and election start with lower case letters. You can also look into doing the rest of the new Hampshire, maine and Vermont municipality maps too if you can, thank you Putitonamap98 (talk) 14:38, 15 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Got it. Once I update the Senate pages to maps with the better shapes and add captions, I'll go back and look at which Senate and Gubernatorial elections in Mass don't have a municipality map yet and I'll do them and then look into NH, VT, and ME. ZackCarns (talk) 15:05, 15 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Autopatrol given edit

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Maps edit

Hey Zack while i really appreciate you updating the maps i should probably go ahead and tell you we should hold off on updating anymore until we get maps made with accurate county boundary lines as alot of the old ones you're changing are inaccurate with very noticeable county shape changes in the 19th and 20th centuries Putitonamap98 (talk) 19:13, 30 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Alright. I'm done with the Presidential maps and I'm just fixing the Senate maps and am almost done with that. I am going to go back in and do some more municipality maps of Massachusetts Senate races then. ZackCarns (talk) 19:15, 30 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
sounds good still needs those. do you anybody who could modify the 810px maps i found someone to do it before but he is no longer active and only managed to make a few. https://digital.newberry.org/ahcb/map/map.html#AL the newbury library is what can help you see all the changes but we really only need to worry about the most noticeable due to limited detail of the v2 shapes where we no longer have to worry about every little microscopic detail you wouldn't see unless you really zoomed in like the old larger files. i just need someone to make the base maps for you and me to color in. Putitonamap98 (talk) 03:29, 31 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I sadly don't. My limitations to map making is really just with limited county changes. Like a county being created from another county. That type of limitation. I don't know anyone who would be able to make these maps. ZackCarns (talk) 12:03, 31 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I have been able to figure out how to make maps using data from Newberry. I can start making these maps, but I want to finish doing Massachusetts municipality maps for the handful of governor races that they aren't available for post-1940 first before I do the Presidential maps.
