Do you mean that someone other than you uploaded the image to the Commons, or do you mean that someone used your Commons image without adhering to its license terms? Please remember that licenses acceptable on Commons do not require the user of an image to notify the author. --rimshot^talk 11:45, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Still struggling with category issues

Oh! I completely misunderstood the question -- I am very sorry and also still feeling like an idiot for making a misspelled category very recently. I think that it was Siebot who cleaned up a problem category that I had created and populated -- and the revision history makes it really seem as if GeorgHH was driving(terminology?) the bot. -- carol 00:10, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Why can't I upload JPG

I've tried several times to upload a JGP image to commons and keep getting the error message that there is no acceptable extension (but there is!).

Also, am I right to assume an image is my own if it was taken by a doctor, given to me and edited by me?Floranerolia 04:10, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

I would like the file IPTG (CBD).png to be copied over IPTG.png. The new file is a better ChemDraw version of what is already available with the proper stereochemistry.

Copyright status question

I'm sure this question has been asked many times before (and, if so, pointing me to the right place will be much appreciated), but what would the copyright status of a picture be in the following situation? Suppose I am a tourist in some exotic place taking pictures left and right and suddenly seeing something that I just have to have a picture of with me in the frame. So, naturally, I'm asking the first friendly stranger to take a picture, which s/he does, leaving me be after doing so. Problem is, who is the copyright holder of the picture? The picture is taken using my camera at my request, and it is highly unlikely that the stranger will recognize the picture s/he made even if they see it a couple days later. There is no way to find that person to make sure the picture can be released under GFDL, which is what I may want to do. So, from the copyright/licensing point of view, is there anything that can be done with this picture except filing it in my private photo album? I realize that in real life it is hardly an issue, and people treat such pictures as their own, but if one needs to be anal about a particular image, what is the right approach? That's an interesting question. My first thought is that the picture was taken under contract to you (even if no many changed hands) and thus belongs to you, much like work done for an employer belongs to the employer rather than the employee. But I don't know if that stands up legally. Powers 18:47, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

The photographer is always the copyright holder. This isn't a problem for personal use, but it does mean it cannot be published without their consent. Under US law, a work is only considered a work for hire if the photographer is a regular employee of the would-be copyright holder or acting under a written contract specifically stating that the outcome is a work for hire. Legislation in other jurisdictions will of course vary, but I doubt you'll find any jurisdiction that would allow anyone but the photographer to claim copyright over such an image. —LX (talk, contribs) 19:31, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

But that's the problem—there is no way to track the photographer down even if one really, really wants to. Besides, what about proof? Even if a picture is released, say, into public domain, and (in a highly unlikely scenario) a person claiming to be the photographer shows up later and claims the rights to the picture, how are they going to prove their authorship? I am the only person possessing the negatives/original digital image, so doesn't it mean that the photographer has released all of the rights to me when they failed to keep an original? I understand that may a difficulty, but the law doesn't make exceptions simply to convenience those who wish to publish works by others. Material ownership of a copy, even if it is the only or original copy, has no bearing on immaterial authorship rights. It may, as you say, affect the ability to prove a case, but we don't violate copyright laws just because we think we can get away with it or because it's convenient. Agreeing to take a photograph does not imply a copyright waiver or a publishing licence; most probably, a person agreeing to take such a photo probably expects it to be kept for personal purposes only. —LX (talk, contribs) 17:03, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Looking for a hand for a video conversion

Hi there! I'd love to provide a 38-second QuickTime video for Wikipedia. For that, I've spent half an hour trying to figure out how to do that on my Linux system. Since neither tools nor the online platform mux.fm worked for me, I'm wondering where I could get help on that. How can I delete my own pictures?

Hello, I uploaded a picture but documented it wrong and at the wrong way and everything was wrong and it is a complete mess now. Help! I can nowhere see an option to delete this image myself! You cannot delete an image yourself. You can easily change the image description, though. Just click the "edit"-button, like on any other Wikipedia page. If you have uploaded an image with a wrong name, upload it again with the better name and add {{badname|better name}} to the badly named image. --rimshot^talk 22:04, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

There is a workaround. Just upload a new picture with a new description and apply the {{badname}}

template to change

I'm guessing you refer to Image:Tsunade..jpg, a screenshot from a non-free television show. It was automatically tagged for deletion as a copyright violation when you added {{Non-free comic}} to the image description, because Commons cannot host images with reference to fair use provisions. See Commons:Licensing.

In general, useful free images are not deleted without a valid reason, which does not include the mere wishes of the uploader. See Commons:Deletion guidelines for valid reasons for deletion and the appropriate corresponding tags and procedures. —LX (talk, contribs) 09:12, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi, er... I'm slightly confused. I wanted to replace the original image (with a better photograph), but was told my account is too new to do this, hence the earlier request for admin intervention. However the original is now tagged with a badname template, which seems to imply that uses of the original image should be edited to point to the new one instead, which I was trying to avoid. Is it not possible to rename the -new.jpg to the original .jpg filename, overwriting it? --Liyang 22:21, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Uploading caption from a Museum exhibit

Welcome. With a naming of 048.jpg this problem will occur over and over, even if you reupload your picture over the new version. To avoid this, please upload by using a explicit nomenclature and change the imagename in the article. Best regards --Richard Bartz 00:14, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Possible problems with GFDL'd 1980s images

While dealing with an image on en-Wikipedia, I followed up on Image:JeanGenet-HansKoechler1983.jpg, and from that I found a series of pictures from the 1980s that are claimed to be GFDL, but I see no evidence provided that the uploader was the photographer (though I suppose it is possible). I just uploaded Image:Elves-shoemaker.gif. When I click on the image so I'm opening it directly, it displays nicely, but when it's loaded in a wikimedia or wikipedia page, it looks awful. Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) copyright and CC 3.0

1. Is it okay to use a copyrighted image from RFE/RL? I saw several other images on Wikimedia Commons taken from RFE/RL website which are used on Wikipedia. Here is their reprint policy. And here is a picture I uploaded and hopefully marked correctly as copyrighted: . If it's a violation of Wiki Commons policy, please delete it. Just want to check before I use it in an article.
2. Also, I'd like to use an image from WebIslam.com website, particularly from this article. On the bottom of the page it says that they're using Creative Commons License 3.0. Is it compatible with Wikimedia Commons?

1. No. "RFE/RL reserves the right to revoke permission for use of its content at any time." Commons only accepts content that is irrevocably free. If you have seen content from this site on Wikipedia, they are either policy violations, or they appear under fair use provisions in a language edition which permits that.
2. The licence is appropriate for Commons, but it is only valid if they are the copyright holders to that image or they are authorised by the copyright holder to issue that licence for the image. —LX (talk, contribs) 12:36, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Rapid Transport Maps

Hi, I've just joined commons and want to contribute some public transport maps, particularly ones of metro systems . Are there any templates or style guides on how to do stations, lines etc? I don't know of any style guides or templates, but you can get a lot of inspiration at Category:Rapid transit maps. As for the canvas size: it does not really matter, as the images will be saled to suitable size. Just make sure you fill out the canvas. --rimshot^talk 13:58, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Suggestion to use a structure such as in for example Image:Gent - Redemptoristen 1.jpg to upload images. "Me" is not an author: if someone reloads the same image over yours (for example after processing), who will be the "me" ? And the uploader is not necessarily the source of the work.

Your signature can be added to your talks by hitting the third icon from the right above the edition window: this inserts a --~~~~ sequence (dash-dash+four tildes) that is automatically expanded by the system to the authors name and the current date. --Foroa 22:12, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

There's a link "upload a new version" on the image page, it works just like a regular upload, but instead of an image description you must give an explanation of why you uploaded a new version. Lots of info, no help

As with a lot of the internet today, there is a lot of information here but little that helps me! I want to know how to upload a photo, in line with the copyright issues. I dont understand all this copyright stuff, even after reading the help contents (there's vast amounts of info on it).can some one confirm to me this is the process?

3. upload image onto wiki

4. enter copyright info found (is this called tagging?)

Looks roughly right. Do note that the copyright information has to be of a particular nature for the image to be acceptable on Commons: we only accept works under a free license issued by the author and works in the public domain.

Have you tried reading our Commons:First steps guide? It's a good summary of the processes you need to know, and it's probably as concise as it can get. As you can see from the deletion log, it was deleted by Zirland with "In category Copyright violations; no license" as the stated reason.

I can also see from the deleted revisions that it was tagged as a copyright violation on 3 April by Maihime, who also left the following additional comment: "obviously a recent commercial map was used for this map. There is no evidence at all that it is under a free license." Maihime ought to have notified you of this, but it appears that this unfortunately did not happen.

Commons:Undeletion requests is the place to request undeletion if you wish to do so. If you do, it would probably be helpful to include information on how the map was made and what aids were used in the process. —LX (talk, contribs) 13:02, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

Yes, you may. Most of the Detroit Publishing Company photos were published before 1923, making them PD in the U.S.[4] Use {{PD-US}} as the license tag, and {{LOC-image|digital ID}} for the source. BTW, the link you gave doesn't work; it's a temporary search result link only. Use the short link given at the bottom of each image page at the LOC to link to an image, e.g. http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/det.4a30666 The source tag for this image would then be {{LOC-image|det.4a30666}}. Jeg har litt problemer med å laste opp bilder. Jeg har lastet opp ett bilde av Bente Lind.jpg som det settes spørsmålstegn ved opphavsretten. Jeg var Bente's manager og har skrevet alle melodiene til hennes plater på MANU. Gjennom mitt foto-studio "Star-Music" tok jeg alle bildene til platecovere og til PR-bruk. Jeg mener dette må være god nok dokumentasjon på min opphavsrett.

Forøvrig er der et bilde til artikkelen om The Dandy Girls som jeg tok i Japan. Jeg ser at Torill Bakken er oppgitt som kilde, og det er helt greit for meg. Men hun kan jo ikke ha tatt bildet idet hun selv er med på bildet. (Det ble ikke brukt selvutløser). Jeg kan jo laste opp bildene i Tif eller Bitmap om det skulle være ønskelig, men jpg er den enkleste å bruke i mail.

What license should a screenshot of the English Wiktionary being displayed in Internet Explorer 6 have? The screenshot shows only the category bar overlapping the general disclaimer bar. Image from Otherwebsite

Hi, I wanted to use an Image form another website, but not aware of the copyright for that Image on that particular site. The problme here is that the image is very old (black and White) and is widely available as poster in India as it is a Phot/Portrait of an Author/Poet, who died in 1947 (more than 60 years ago). Not only available from various sources in Print media, but the same image is posted on various other websites as well. I doubt that there is no Copyright associated with this image now, but still wanted to be sure before uploading it to Commons, is there any way to find out? or else, if you want to know about the image, try searching with "ઝવેરચંદ મેઘાણી" on google, and you'll see number of images with a Turban on head or here. Yes. Would also be good to say now what should be done if that information is not available or not known. It is surprising how many cases there are where the photographer is not known. In that case, some other clause in the relevant copyright law usually applies, often, but not always, relating to the point of first publication. Carcharoth (Commons) 23:25, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi EugeneZelenko, Thanks for your reply, but it is impossible to find the name of Photographer, as its a way old image, probably it is not a photograph as in those days, there was not such a common tradition to take photographs in India, this might be a portrait (however it looks more like a photograph), and if so, impossible to get artist's name as well. When you say, date of Death, whose death? photographer's/srtis's or of the person whose phot/portrait is it? if it is about the person, then he died on 9th March 1947. Now tell me what can be done in this case?

Hi, I just found on Indian Copyright law that the work becomes free in case of:

• Anonymous/Pseudonymous/Posthumous works, Photographs, Movies, Sound recordings, - Sixty years from the beginning of the year following the year in which it was published.

Hence, in present case, as the person died 60 years ago, obviously the photograph was taken when he was alive, hence It has been definitely more than 60 years of Publication of the Image, and in that case this Image is now in Public Domain. One problem. The image you linked seems to have a signature or date at bottom right. Does the image you want to upload have anything similar? Also, there is a distinction drawn between works that were anonymous at the time of publication, and that have become anonymous due to loss of information over time. Which is this? Yes, what you can see on the bottom right corner is Date (as it seems to be), which I could read as 2.4.21. Reagrding second question Nothign can be commented, I would personally feel it as "loss of information over time", but possibility of its being "anonymous at the time of publication" can even not be ruled out. Public Domain

Can I change a public domain image license? Put it in CC, for example?

Public domain is the most free of all "licenses"; in fact, it is not really a license, as the copyright holder is waiving all rights and everyone is allowed to do whatever they want with the image, without any attribution etc. However, you can't claim a stricter license (lice CC or GNU-FDL) for an image which was released into the public domain by its copyright holder (in the case of the image in question: en:User:1dragon); such a claim would be invalid - the image remains in the public domain. The public domain license might be bogus in this case: the Pokemon cards are quite certainly copyrighted. One could argue that no single card is in the focus of the photograph, but I don't think the image would stay on Commons for very long. --rimshot^talk 06:49, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

I'm probably posting this to the wrong board, so shoot me. But the process of uploading a Creative Commons photo from Flickr is way too complicated for me to understand, apparently. Unable to log in

Proving ownership of images

First, I apologize if this isn't the right place to ask this sort of question.

I've been uploading some pictures that I took myself, with my own camera, a few years ago. I earlier submitted some of those photos to another photo-sharing website, with my name plainly attached to them. Now I'd like to use some of those photos on Wikipedia pages I've been working on. Another Commons user continues to tag my images as copyvios, citing that other site on which I had posted them. How can I indicate that I have the right to these photos, as I took them myself? The user seems to be concerned that the images have been copied from http://www.plateshack.com/ where it says that "the images either belong to Marc Welby or Mike Sells". I'm now satisfied that QQQQQQ is credited as the photographer of a number of image on the website http://www.plateshack.com and therefore any such images are not copyright violations. Thanks to QQQQQQ for their cooperation in resolving this issue. OTRS ticket number 2008041910009925 refers to these images and can be quoted if any more issues arise regarding them, an OTRS volunteer can then check this ticket to confirm the identity. Not-quite duplicates

I tagged an image a while back with the duplicate tag because it was the same picture as another image, albeit a different size. It got deleted, but the log noted NOT an exact duplicate. is there a special tag for images which have the same picture but at different dimensions? -mattbuck (Talk) 14:42, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

A lower resolution version of the same image (at least to my understanding) gets deleted as the wiki software creates and stores different sizes as they are requested from this and other wiki. -- carol 08:02, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

I submitted an aticle to Wikipedia in Nov. 2006. I want to post an image to coincide with the text. The article "Uqair" was published but the image I have submitted is not on the page of the same title - even though it has been submitted. Is it possible to post the image with the article?

If you took a photo yourself, and it is of something which could not claim to be copyright, use the upload section "entirely your own work" and publish under something like cc-by-sa-3.0. duplicate

I recently uploaded a duplicate image to the commons with the same name that is being used "locally" on a wikipedia article. My intention was for the article to use the image from the new location where it now resides in the commons. There are now however two files and two pages with the same image and the same name. You did everything right, you even provided a good upload summary, which many people forget. I can see the updated image, but I guess that your browser still holds a cached version. If you want to upload images from the Maschinenfabrik Seydelmann KG, you also need to send us a formal release for your images from a seydelmann.com e-mail address, e.g. from "sales". Image:KK 140-AC6.jpg is the same as the image shown here. Send your release to permissions-commonswikimedia.org, stating clearly to which images it applies. Your release must clearly state under which license you provide these images. It must be a free license and it must not be restricted to Wikipedia-only use. If you really want to put these images in the public domain or license them freely, state so clearly in your e-mail. But be aware that once released under a free license, you cannot retract that release, and such a release would also allow the competitors of Seydelmann KG to use these images for whatever purpose. I found a foto of Fidel Castro and N. Costa Mendez taken in Cuba in 1982 and published 1993 in the book "Malvinas, Esta es la historia", Nicanor Costa Mendez, Editorial Sudamericana, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1993, ISBN 950-07-0837-X, (Author=Unknown).

Do you know about the copyright of the foto? Can I upload the photo? Under which license?

I know nothing of the specifics of copyright in Cuba, but it is a member of the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works which for photographic works requires a minimum protection term of 25 years after the photography was created. If Cuba were applying this minimum term, the protection of the 1982 photograph in question would have recently expired in Cuba; however, I believe that the photograph still would be protected in the United States for a very long time (because it was protected in Cuba on January 1, 1996 - see Uruguay Round Agreements Act) and therefore you can't upload it; also, it seems rather unlikely to me that Cuba itself is applying only this minimum term required by the Berne Convention, as many countries rather use a term similar to literary works, e.g. 50 or 70 years after the author's death (post mortem auctoris). Therefore the probability that the photography in question can't be uploaded here is very high, in my personal opinion (I'm not an expert on legal matters) - there may be some intricacies of Cuban law not yet known to me allowing it (provided the photo wasn't protected in Cuba on January 1, 1996), but this seems unlikely. See User:Lupo/Hairy copyright#Cuba. For photographs, the Berne Convention allows shorter terms, and Cuba indeed has 25 years since publication (was 10 years until 1994). At en-WP, they have en:Template:PD-Cuba. I'm not sure it is correct. On the one hand, the situation may actually be slightly more favorable if the Cuban term extension in 1994 applied only to works still copyrighted then. On the other hand, the situation may be even worse, depending on the text of the 1903 treaty with the U.S. and whether that treaty is still in force. (There's two Google books links on the talk page at en-WP, but neither shows me any text. Dunno why.) Also, Cuba is a UCC member since 1957. GPS map screenshots

I have created some maps using my GPS software (eg. Pelion_West_Map_GPS.jpg‎ for the article on Mount Pelion West)and wasn't sure what copyrigt tag to put on. I used the self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all but as Ozhiker pointed out the maps are likely copyrighted. I have since established that they are and have contacted the producer of the maps and gained permission to use them in my Wikipedia articles. The wording was "Feel free to use images of the product we simply require you to state that the screen captures of maps are taken from DiscoverAus Streets and Track Topo Copyright PSMA and Next Destination Pty Ltd"

When I tried to upload it, I was told that my account was too new to upload an image where one already exists, to upload it under a different name, and then ask someone here to move it to its correct location. No — it's not a grouping symbol, it's an 'evaluate from a to b' symbol. I don't know what it's called. Now that you mention it, I don't even know how standard it is, but it's defined in my text (Stewart's Calculus, 5th ed., pp. 345-6) as such and I've seen it used frequently around my college. I've wondered about that, but I've never seen it used that way - compare with piecewise brackets, which in their case lack a closing bracket. It's implicit that everything in the expression is being evaluated. Regardless, that's the way it is at Image:AMS Euler sample.png as well, the only difference is the resolution, so I don't think that would make it a bad idea to merge the two. Screenshot--copyright infringement or not?

Hi. I want to contribute to the 3D Criticisms section of Live Search Maps by adding an example of when the 3D map does a poor job showing the topography and overall appearance (specifically, a screenshot of the software displaying Mt. Also...I found something else that would make for a good criticism screenshot, involving user-created buildings in St. Louis, including the Arch and the highways as well as some buildings. I'd like to know the legalities on this as well. The copyright for both images is 2008 Microsoft Corporation, Image Courtesy of USGS (copyright info for each view in Live Maps varies).

In the English Wikipedia, it is allowed to upload screenshots of copyrighted webpages as fair use "for identification and critical commentary relating to the website in question", see e.g. en:Image:Virtual Earth 3D.png for an image used in the article en:Live Search Maps, using the template {{Non-free web screenshot}}. See also en:Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline. So, such an upload with a clear purpose as you propose here would probably be fine in the English Wikipedia (you can do it there), but not here on Commons. Commons doesn't accept "fair use" uploads, for an explanation see Commons:FAQ#Why doesn't the Commons include fair use content?. Gestumblindi 23:10, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

I have been trying to upload a file that I created allowing free public access (i.e. no particular license). I always receive some obscure rejection. The file is called Metapsychiatry.pdf. You have successfully uploaded the file (see Media:Metapsychiatry.pdf, but you do have to add a copyright tag to the description page to place the file into the public domain or put it under a free licence.

Also note that the file is probably outside our project scope. We typically host media files that are of use to other Wikimedia projects. We typically do not host content that would be better represented as text with wiki markup. —LX (talk, contribs) 09:33, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

bot leaving inappropriate messages

A bot gave me a message whilst I was writing the details for the image I had just uploaded. I was in the process of giving it a license tag. The message arrived about 1 minute after the image was uploaded and threatened with blocking. I feel that this is not appropriate to give such a message so soon after an upload. I do not know of any rule that says that the license tags can not be added after the upload. Snowmanradio 13:23, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Well their is a reason to put up a license before the upload. It's just trying to catch uploads without licenses. Just ignore the bot message, and add your license unless it's a copyvio. --Kanonkas_(talk) 13:42, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

This was another version cropped from an image on the commons to centre on the bird. In this case I had to follow the copyright of the image already on the commons. I copied all the details (including the licence) from the original image making small modifications to include details of the other version when it was already uploaded. This was the easiest way to do this, in my opinion. Snowmanradio 18:26, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

You could have simply copy'n'pasted the info into the upload summary too. But it's really no big deal if you add it after the upload (within a few minutes, of course). Just ignore the bot. Usually you get more time, but it seems we got a new bot doing this. I would talk to the creator if you really think it's an issue. Rocket000 19:54, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Licence of image

Regarding Image:Unidentified Yellow and Green Bird 1316px.jpg which I found on the commons today: I have identified the parrot so it will need another name. I would be grateful if I could have a clarification of the meaning of the extensive text of the "permission" in the summary box. As the image has been released under a GFDL-1.2|cc-by-sa-2.5 licence, can all the permission section be simplified or deleted? Snowmanradio 18:17, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, all that's needed is the standard license template, however, I would leave the last two sections as a courtesy to the author (and it may benefit those looking for special permission). Rocket000 20:06, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

I have edited it and just used the last two sections as you have indicated. I would like to change its name to something like "Image:Olive-headed Lorikeet (Trichoglossus euteles) -upper body.jpg", and then link the image on the en wiki. How is changing its name done? Well, there's no easy way to rename images. You simply have reupload it under the new name. Once this is done, you can make the other one with {{Badname}} to be deleted (any links to it will be redirected). Rocket000 07:03, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Do you mean the user talk page? That's pretty easy, for example click this and you've come to my user talk. Then +comment to make a new section. You shouldn't delete those messages, instead archive your talk page. --Kanonkas_(talk) 05:10, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Changing public domain image

I needed a photo of country singer Tammy Wynette to use here. I found "Image:Jones wynette.jpg" on enWikipedia. It had been uploaded by User:Ultramontane on 9 Oct 2006 using a "pd-self" tag. The photo is black and white, and shows both Wynette and her then husband, George Jones, but I thought it would be satisfactory for my purpose with some modifications. I made the needed changes, and then uploaded the modified photo on 28 Apr 2008 at WikiCommons as "Image:Tammy wynette2.jpg". I, too, used a "pd-self" tag, carefully specifying the origin of the image. Very shortly thereafter I received a message from User:ABF indicating that my work had been faulty in terms of specifying source/creator and/or copyright tag. Communications with User:ABF have not helped me to determine what I should do to prevent the image from being deleted. I would appreciate assistance. Tim Ross (talk) 14:34, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

The image at English Wikipedia has been marked as copyright violation. This means that the uploader at Wikipedia did not have the right to release the image as PD, and that any derivative work is not PD either. In short: you didn't do anything wrong, but the license at Wikipedia was incorrect. --rimshot^talk 15:06, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

(Edit conflict, the image at en-WP was so tagged by me.) The problem is that the image at the English Wikipedia en:Image:Jones wynette.jpg is a copyright violation. I've now tagged it appropriately, it'll be removed shortly. Photographer was Harry Langdon, a celebrity photographer who is still in business: [7]. Hence your crop isn't ok either. Sorry. No License Tag

I got a message for my scanned picture Digin_Siranush.jpg it lacks a license tag. But it has the same source given (dating 1907) in preceding pictures I could upload without this error message. What's wrong with a license when the source is > 100 years old? User: Indra

You have to add an appropriate license tag. If the author is really unknown, the picture is most likely in the public domain everywhere: it seems it's anyway in the public domain in India according to what {{PD-India}} says (sixty years after publication) and this makes it in the public domain in the US as well, as it was PD in the source country on January 1, 1996. Therefore I think it is safe to add the license tags {{PD-India}} and {{PD-1996}}. The status of this image as "public domain" in India as well as in the US doesn't depend on the author; as India's copyright ends 60 years after publication, it doesn't matter should the author have died later than 1937 - it remains a pre-1923 publication without restored copyright in the US. There is a slight possibility that the image is still protected in outher countries, e.g. if an author can be found and she or he died after 1937, the heirs could claim copyright protection in many European countries like Germany. But as Commons accepts uploads that are public domain in the source country and in the US, this image seems to be fine. Gestumblindi 10:16, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Correction: I didn't read your upload description well enough and now notice that the picture has nothing to do with India at all, it was published in Constantinople, making it a Turkish publication. But what does it finally mean: orphan & no license tag? --> The pictures were scanned by myself out of an Armenian almanac (yearbook) of 1907 published in Constantinople (nowadays: Turkey). Orphan means that the image is not in a category or gallery. No license tag means that there is no copyright or licensing tag on the image description page. You have to edit the page and add an appropriate one. —LX (talk, contribs) 21:37, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Mogelijke verwijdering bestand!

Zojuist heb ik een bestand geüpload naar Wikicommons zie hier bestand. Ik heb keurig vermeld dat dit bestand oorspronkelijk afkomstig is van gebruiker Wereon en dat ik het heb aangepast voor gebruik op de Nederlandstalige Wikipedia. Wereon heeft zijn bestand opgeslagen onder GNU Free Documentation Licence, dus dit houdt in dat ik het bestand mag overnemen en bewerken. En nu krijg ik ineens het bericht dat het bestand mogelijk wordt verwijderd. Ik verneem graag het hoe en waarom over deze actie, want ik snap hier werkelijk niets van.

Figuring out if these images are public domain

I visited the M.D. Anderson Library, which is the University of Houston's main library recently. I went to the library's Special collection, and found some great images from the university archives that are a really great way to illustrate parts of the university's history. I told the library that I'd like to use these images on a Wikimedia project (namely Wikipedia), and asked if they were under public domain. The special collection librarian in charge of copyright assured me these images are free because they are owned by the University of Houston, a public, Texas institution. I also had to sign a form stating the intent of use for the images, and I stated that they would be used for Wikipedia. This is on file at the library.

I've been trying to find anything about this elsewhere, but I can't. The library has digitized the two images I'd like to use for me. One is from 1938, a preliminary drawing by the architect of the first building at the university. The second is from 1945, a view of the school's original library. Neither of the images have copyright notices attached to them, and I wasn't given any sort of copyright notice by the library when they were electronically delivered to me.

Are these images in public domain? There are a few main issues I'd point at here. The images don't have a copyright notice on them, and were published prior to 1989. The library knew the purpose, and released them to me. They claimed they were free images. I just don't want to be posting things up that will be taken down.
