Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

The second welcome edit
I can give you a third welcome, but it was your brain that gave you the second. I don't know if a welcome from me is actually worth anything though, but you can have it anyways. Welcome -- carol (talk) 06:36, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
SVGs edit
Hi Amble, welcome to Wikimedia Commons. :) I came by to say thanks for the thoughtful answers you've been giving at the Help desk. I noticed you're interested in learning more about SVGs. I trust you've discovered the Commons:Graphic Lab? If not, I think it's the best place to start. If you can read French, there are some good tutorials on SVG mapmaking available. cheers, pfctdayelise (说什么?) 20:12, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Kradai map edit
Thanks for vectoring the Tai-Kadai map. I updated the classification to distinguish the five clear branches of the family, which the english article is based on, and made the colors of the three Tai subbranches more similar to reflect their close relationship. Please revert if you don't think it's appropriate, and I'll upload under a different name. Kwamikagami (talk) 10:50, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, I noticed the font problem, but didn't know what it meant. Is there a list somewhere of supported fonts? (I'm using Gentium Basic, which I would think would be supported, since it's a free SIL linguistic font.)
- I've just corrected that error. The only two 'northern' Tai languages per that classification are Saek, in central Laos, and "Yay". I'd thought Yay was Giay in Vietnam, but maybe I got that wrong. I'll color the remaining spot Blue and just leave Saek as Northern Tai until we get that figured out. I agree it's a bit odd that northern Tai is further south than central, but the Saek have stories of have come from further north. Kwamikagami (talk) 08:56, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT (talk) 05:37, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
