Welcome, and some image issues

edit

Hi, welcome to Wikipedia and to Wikimedia Commons.

I see that you've updated the logo used on the Board of Deputies of British Jews article, so thanks for that.

This is Wikimedia though, and the straightforward is rarely so! So there's still some paperwork to clear up. Three things:

  • At some point, someone is going to complain about your account name. The 'bots will then over-react in an automatic way and you will receive a very unfriendly warning and probably have your account blocked. This is a really bad thing that we do, and we should stop doing it, but who listens to me? The problem is that WP is dead against "group" accounts, or names that look like they might be being shared amongst a group. This is crazy - we permit "anonymous", but we stamp on "team". Madness. Anyway, please don't take it personally. Commons isn't too bad on this, but Wikipedia is very hot on it.
Easiest thing is to rename the account, maybe to "BoardofDeputiesPRPerson" ? You can request this at Meta:Steward requests/Username changes.
  • COM:OTRS is probably a good thing. This is just an email that you might send stating that, "Yes, I really do represent the group owning this proprietary logo and I did mean to upload it here". It's a paperwork exercise, it's read by a human, and it often saves trouble in the future.
  • Finally, is it really best to upload it here at Commons, or is it best at Wikipedia? Commons only accepts this under a "free licence", meaning that anyone (anyone) can use it in the future and do anything (anything) with it. Better, IMHO, is to upload it to Wikipedia as non-free content. This is how the previous logo was done, see en:File:Board of deputies.svg. It needs to have a "fair use rationale" added to it (or copied from the existing one), but that's no problem. It means that you haven't had to grant a free licence to everyone for the image, which I think is worth it for a logo.

Anyway, welcome and I'm just sorry that it's not a bit more straightforward. If I can help at all, just ask either here or at WP. Andy Dingley (talk) 11:35, 3 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
