SS Rank Images

Thanks. I use Photoshop, and once I get the "pieces" done, putting the images together is not that bad. Funny looking images kind of get my attention and I have been stuck on the German WWII period for a little while. I also did a bunch of US Navy ship crests and Air Force shields. SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics)

Please use SVG Thank you for uploading some images! Did you know that Wikimedia Commons recommends the SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) format for certain types of images? Scalable Vector Graphics are designed to look appropriate at any scale, and SVG images are easier to modify and translate, helping Wikimedia to distribute knowledge to all of the world. A lot of modern programs support SVG export. If you encountered problems or have questions, don't hesitate to ask me, a member of the Graphic Lab, or the Graphics village pump. Uploading images in SVG format isn't mandatory, but it would help. (To avoid any misunderstandings, please don't just put raster images into an SVG container as embedded raster.) Illegible legend

I tried to make sense of what your picture actually shows, but upon enlarging it I found out that the legend is garbled. Please explain what's written next to these tiny boxes and what different colours mean, or give me a link to a much larger PNG file on which your upload was based. The chart is featured in English Wikipedia virtually with no legend of anykind. I'd like to improve on that article. Thanks in advance. Poeticbent talk 04:57, 1 August 2016 (UTC)

• • I looked at this image and I couldn't find anything that was garbled. Might I suggest trying to view the image in a higher resolution? As far as a legend, the boxes are based on US Army map symbols and the colors are mostly based on US Army branch colors. If you view my commons I've put a more detailed explanation of all my graphics.

Software used?

Some Complaints

Hi there. I, too, have been doing some orbats and placing them in Wikimedia Commons. I prefer the style of Noclador and I try to emulate his/her orbats, including colours, size of images and font. While I don't personally like your style, I will concede that differing styles are fine, each to his own etc. Just so long as the image accurately displays information. Although it might be good to have an agreed upon orbat making style, I'm not sure if we need one at present.

I do have some complaints, and I will hope you take them to heart and not see this as a personal attack but rather a chance to make better orbat images.

The first is that you've made a number of spelling mistakes, and these are often replicated through the orbat. If I knew the font style you use I could correct these myself. I make spelling mistakes too and try as I might in self editing these sometimes get through. I often look at some of my older orbats to ensure any spelling errors get caught.

The second is a bit more serious and something I noticed with your orbat https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1st_Armored_DIV_23_FEB_1943.png. Obviously US WW2 Armored Division orbats can be broken into a regimental chart or a combat command chart. You chose the latter and that's fine. The problem is that each combat command should be made up of the battalions it was issued from the various regiments, and not include the regiments themselves. As an example, look at Combat Command B, where you have attached the 13th Armored Regiment. Yet in Combat Command A we have two battalions from the 13th Armored Regiment, the 1st and 3rd battalions. Since each Regiment had only three battalions, the regiment you've placed in CCB is actually the 2nd battalion of the 13th Regiment. Similarly you have the 6th Armored Infantry Regiment in CCA, but a battalion in CCB and another in Reserve, which implies that CCA has a battalion of the 6th, not the entire regiment. The same with the 16th Armored Engineer Battalion in reserve, while two of its three companies are in CCA and CCB, which implies that the unit in reserve is a company, not a battalion. All this means that your orbat tries to be both a regimental and a combat command chart at the same time, and does neither. To improve this orbat, you need to have consistently sized units in all three combat commands. This means no regiments... only battalions and companies. I haven't checked your other orbats but there might be similar problems. (By the way, after checking Nafziger https://usacac.army.mil/cac2/CGSC/CARL/nafziger/943UBMB.pdf I find that the document you looked at for reference makes this same mistake, so all you've done is replicate their mistake.)

The third is something which I think all of us (myself, you and noclador) need to do is place sources on the image itself. I've just done an Orbat for the 442nd Regimental Combat team: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:US_442nd_RCT.png and as you can see I have placed historical sources and URLs on the bottom left hand side of the image. Placing the sources in the image itself will allow future viewers of our images to check the accuracy of our work. Of course you've said in your home page that you use the Nafziger Collection. I do too. There are thousands of orbats there to access, so our work is cut out for us. But let's say you are doing an orbat of, say, the reorganization of the US 1st armored division in June 1944. The Nafziger URL for this is https://usacac.army.mil/cac2/CGSC/CARL/nafziger/944UGMA.pdf So if you're creating an orbat, placing this URL onto your image would be useful. It would also be useful to include the source mentioned in the Nafziger pdf, (Howe, G., The Battle History of the 1st Armored Division, 1954, Washington, DC) as well.

Again let me encourage you to continue making your orbats. I have looked at them often. As I've said I don't really like their style but that's no reason to discourage you. Moreover I would also appreciate your own feedback and critique of the orbats I create, and don't be afraid to make your own changes to them because, while they are "mine" in the sense that I first made them, by making them public domain they become everyone's and no ones.

One minor typographical error that I would bring to your attention re the above - you appear to list the British Army III CORPS twice. The 4th, 29th, 31st and 48th Divisons are attached to the VIII CORPS.
