Village pump question

edit

Hi Donabel SDSU, your question at Commons:Village_pump#How to create subcategories programmatically is answered. Multichill (talk) 13:32, 7 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Email:
Hi Multichill,
Thanks for answering my question in the Village Pump. Before I can start using pagefromfile.py I need to know if I will create any problems with naming the subcategories with a colon ":". Yesterday, I received this concern and I'm still waiting to hear if its OK to use the colon in the subcategory names. Please take a look at this:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:WikiProject_Tree_of_Life#Categorization_issue.2FStructural_Classification_of_Proteins
Many thanks for your help!
Donabel
End of email
Donabel SDSU, please don't send me email. I like to keep the conversations onwiki. I'll take a look at that topic. Multichill (talk) 15:03, 7 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Unnecessary categories

edit

Hallo, as I deleted in the past hundreds of your categories, and I noticed that Rocket000 has to delete many more, I would like to ask you to try to avoid to create unused categories, and to tag the unneeded ones with {{Badname|New name}} or {{Speedy|Not needed}}. Thank you. --Foroa (talk) 07:28, 20 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your contributions. Your image or other content was recently deleted, or will soon be deleted, in accordance with our process and policies, because it was not, or is not, within our scope. Please review our project scope, but in short, Commons is targeted at educational media files including photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text and video clips. The expression “educational” is to be understood according to its broad meaning of “providing knowledge; instructional or informative”. Wikimedia Commons does not contain text articles like encyclopedia articles, textbooks, news, word definitions and such. Each of these other kinds of content have their own projects: Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikinews, Wiktionary and Wikiquote. If the content seems to fit the scope of one of those other projects, please consider contributing it there. Otherwise, consider an alternative outlet. If you think that the deletion was in error because the contribution really was in scope, you can appeal it at Commons:Undeletion requests, giving a reason why it fits our scope to help others evaluate the matter. Thank you for your understanding.

Category:Graf

edit

Hi Donabel SDSU, do you have a suggestion for a better name for Category:Graf. It has a (very) different meaning in Dutch and German. Multichill (talk) 23:16, 28 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for mentioning this. I created a new Category:Graf - Protein Domain Donabel SDSU (talk) 13:26, 29 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Please stop the bot

edit

Hello Donabel. Please stop the bot. Why? It's certainly unnecessary to have hundreds of (in principal the same) pictures: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Uncategorized_in_SCOP. Noone will ever use that material in that form. Even the names are useless! --Yikrazuul (talk) 09:57, 27 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello Yikrazuul. The upload of these protein structure images was discussed in the Village pump before I began this project. Please refer to the earlier discussions: Discussion in February 2008 and Discussion in February 2009.
You may also contact AndrewGNF for additional information regarding the use of these protein structure images. Thank you. Donabel SDSU (talk) 04:47, 28 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
