First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Tomb of Sethi I painting

([1]) Done today. It's my drawing since the Sethi's tomb. Simply I forgot this feather. This painting is antic (PD-old I think ?) but it's also showed in a lot of books : I hope my drawing is not copyviol ? If it is, delete it. Hello. I mean it's not the original Sethi's tomb frescoe, but a process work by me : 1)- watching different reproductions; 2)- draw my own reproduction with colored pencils, marker-pens or (when I was young) other tools (screentones, dry transfert...); 3)-scan this drawing and, if necessary, improve it with a computer software; 4)- upload it. Many administrators don't know and believe this process work and they conclude that I violated some intellectual property, even when there is nowhere identical image to mine, but even more easily when there are similar images (generally my sources). That's why I understand that they are erasing them: it's their appreciation of resemblance or difference. The real difficulty is not there. The problem for Wikipedia is that more the years pass, more the public domain shrinks and the copyrights apply to everything and whatever growths. This is one of the reasons why I am retired. Hello, yes I drew it, copying the right part of the famous painting made by Heinrich von Minutoli. I do not know the Commons uploaded file https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Races2.jpg. Given that my copy is defect, dont be confused, but please delete my copy and I will ask a friend to replace my defective copy with File:Races2.jpg. This is all the misunderstanding between the old generation working (and copying images) out and without the computers (years 1970-90) before scanning, and the younger one. If I knew that "Races2" [[2]] existed, I would have never scanned and downloaded "Lybian-Nubian-Syrian-Egyptian" [3]. But don't worry about it : 1)- my friend placed the correct "Races2" in all the articles where were my defect "Lybian-Nubian-Syrian-Egyptian" one; 2)- now I'll will ask to another colleague to correct definitively "Lybian-Nubian-Syrian-Egyptian". --Spiridon Ion Cepleanu (talk) 09:29, 20 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
