Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:46, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

Copyright review
editGood morning,
First, thank you for your interest to improve Wikimedia Commons with your contributions about Bill Herchman.
Wikimedia Commons only publishes pictures published under a free license (like the Creative Commons' CC-BY or CC-BY-SA ones) or in the public domain.
I'm currently reviewing your uploads on a copyright basis and would like we check together the copyright situation. As far as I'm understanding the situation, you scanned several photos from your archives.
When you scan a photo from your personnal archive collection, this photo could still be copyrighted. US law is a little bit complicated on copyright matter, see Copyright Term and the Public Domain in the United States for an overview of date calculations.
Could you, for each picture, give the following information if you know them?
- Photographer name
- Photographer death date, if he isn't alive anymore
- Photo date (year or approximative years range is acceptable if you don't have the exact date)
- Photography first publishing date (if known ; generally, it's the photo date)
- Source (=how you find this picture)
You can whether fill the arry or reply directly here, I will then fill it.
We'll finally know if these photos could or not be published on Wikimedia Commons. --Dereckson (talk) 08:01, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
