Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~. To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg. You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account. There are several tools to upload files. Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful. Made a mistake? Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it. Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Please don't blank pages

Hi Hischwab,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed you blanked Orange city (Florida) on Commons. I asume you meant for the page to be deleted, but blanking the page is not the right way to do this. I'd like to strongly recommend to use {{speedy| type reason here }} and add it on top of the page you would like to have deleted; This way it will be placed on a special list that administrators check regularly for deletion. Dear Krinkle, thank you very much for your message. Yes, it is true, I wanted to delete the above mentioned page (and I will do so). But that is not the real problem. Today I wrote an article on Orange City, Florida, (in the German Wikipedia) and I wanted to provide a link to Wiki Commons, so that readers could catch an impression of the location. I tried to create the category, but was not able to do so. Now, one possibility would be to erase the whole page (as mentioned above), the other one would be to create this category. May I kindly ask you to help me along (as I already studied the help pages, but I am still not able to solve the problem)? Dear Krinkle, guess the problem is already solved. By incidence I found the category Orange City, Florida and put the link on the article in the German WP (it was Orange City, Florida instead of Orange City (Florida), actually) and Jameslwoodward was so kind to erase the page “Orange city (Florida)” without any further comment. Category:Kantonsspital Nidwalden

Lieber Roland zh, vielen Dank, dass Du die Gallerie:Kantonsspital Nidwalden aufgeräumt hast. Könntest Du mir vielleicht die Systematik näher bringen, nach welcher Du vorgegangen bist(oder eine Quelle nennen)? Als Anfänger habe ich diesbezüglich wirklich ein wenig einen Knoten im Kopf. Lieber Hischwab, gerne geschehen, aber von "Aufräumen" kann nicht Rede sein, da ich u.a. lediglich Category:Buildings in Switzerland von Zeit zu Zeit "im Auge" habe ;-) Diese dient der Kategorisierung von Gebäuden in der Schweiz — im hierarchischen "Kategorienbaum" sind die einzelnen "Gebäudearten" ersichtlich (Spitäler beispielsweise als Teil von "Medical buildings in Switzerland"). Aus meiner Sicht (d.h. persönliche Meinung und keine "Vorschrift") kann zusätzlich eine geographische ([Category:Gemeinde] und "[Category:Building in the canton of xxx]") und zeitliche (wann erstellt: z.B. Category:Built in Switzerland in 1964) Kategorisierung ergänzend erfolgen.

Bei mehreren/vielen Bildern zum gleichen Thema (beispielsweise Deine Bilder zum Kantonsspital Nidwalden) kannst Du einfach eine entsprechende "Kategorie" einrichten und diese wie o.e. dann im Kategorien-Baum "einordnen" (ist viel einfacher als es sich anhört).

Bilder zur beispielsweise "Kultur" eines CH-Kantons kannst Du (aus meiner Sicht, hier gibt es andere Meinungen) unter "[Category:Culture of the canton xxx]" einordnen, Personen, Geschichte etc.etc. analog. Als Beispiele mögen die "Kategorien-Hierarchie" von Category:Canton of St. Gallen und Category:Canton of Zürich dienen, welche sich wiederum am "Kategorien-Baum" von Category:Switzerland anlehnen.

Grundsätzlich unterscheiden musst Du übrigens zwischen "Galerien" (imho 'nur' als Ergänzung z.B. in DE-Wikis und "optische Präsenation" Deiner Bilder innerhalb von Wikimedia commons) und "Kategorien", wobei letztere einer Datenbank-mässigen "Gliederung" innerhalb von Wikimedia commons dienen und aus meiner Sicht "wichtiger" als reine Bildgalerien sind — hiezu wirst Du wahrscheinlich genauso viele unterschiedliche Ansichten finden wie UserInnen, weshalb ich mir nicht anmasse das weiter auszuführen.

Vertiefendes zum Thema findest Du erschöpfend unter Categorisation und (nicht alle sind so "diskussionsfaul" wie ich) unter Commons:Forum :-)

Grundsätzlich machst Du bei Uploads von Bildern aber absolut nichts "falsch", wenn Du diese in der Kategorie der jeweiligen CH-Gemeinde (z.B. Category:Stans, Nidwalden ist btw nur minimal kategorisiert, daher die o.e. Beispiele) respektive (sofern vorhanden oder von Dir erstellt) in den entsprechenden "Unterkategorien" von Gemeinde/Stadt/Dorf — sofern vorhanden für z.B. Gebäude unter "[Category:Buildings in GemeindeXYZ]" (siehe beispielsweise Category:Buildings in Zürich), d.h. bei umfangreicheren Kategorien/Städten mit entsprechender und/oder auch von Dir zu gestaltender Kategorienstruktur — kategorisierst ;-)

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
