Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:55, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

File:Map_Rudolf_Harbig-Dynamo-Ilgen-Güntzwiesen-Stadion-Dresden.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

--Martin H. (talk) 21:41, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
File:Stamp_rudolf_harbig_stadion_2009.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |
--Martin H. (talk) 21:36, 19 November 2009 (UTC) Please inquire Bundesarchiv. --Ivenhoe (talk) 21:46, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
- No. You claim that "This image was provided to Wikimedia Commons by the German Federal Archive (Deutsches Bundesarchiv) as part of a cooperation project.".
- If this is correct you have to name the source in the way the copyright holder specified. All images from the BArch follow the same attribution requirement. The attribution is "Bundesarchiv B xxx Bild xzz zzzzz-zzzzz Foto: author | date"
- If the images are not from the cooperation you should not select that license but provide a written permission from the BArch instead. --Martin H. (talk) 21:55, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
Source:Hochbauamt Dresden 1938--Ivenhoe (talk) 21:56, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
- then please correct the source and remove the wrongly and randomly selected license templates... If the image is not from the BArch and not uploaded here with BArch written permission you should not select the license. --Martin H. (talk) 21:57, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
OK, I will try it with the Public domain.--Ivenhoe (talk) 21:58, 19 November 2009 (UTC) PD-GermanGov?????--Ivenhoe (talk) 22:01, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
- Not try it... you must assure that the photographer died 70 years ago or, if the photographer is unknown, that you did all possible research and asked all known sources to find out who the photographer was. If you did all this you can select pd-old. You copied the images from http://www.das-neue-dresden.de/gauforum.html, I dont think you did any research on them. Furthermore this comes from Wihlem Kreis, Kreis died 1955, so selecting Template:PD-old is obviously wrong, the author NOT died 70 years ago. PD-GermanGov is for texts of law and for official texts, nothing more. --Martin H. (talk) 22:04, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
Ok. You have no idea what you do here, right? You select random licenses and obviously not know how to do correctly. You have to select the correct license according to Commons:Licensing. According to that page In germany works are under copyright 70 years after the authors death, so you can not upload works created by persons not died befor December 31 1938 here. That applies to:
- Paul Wolf, died 1957, this works are not public domain till 2028. File:Gauforum Dresden Ilgenkampfbahn, Lenné Straße, Großer Garten 1938.jpg, File:Model of Gauforum Dresden Ilgenkampfbahn Lenné Straße Saxons Hall 1938 complete.jpg
- Wilhelm Kreis died 1955, this works are not public domain till 2026. File:Model of Gauforum Dresden Ilgenkampfbahn Lenné Straße Saxons Hall 1938.jpg, File:Model of Gauforum Dresden Ilgenkampfbahn Lenné Straße 1938.jpg, File:Construction Map Ilgenkampfbahn Dresden 1938.jpg, File:Plannings ilgenkampfbahn dresden 1938.jpg. Also the plans are under copyright by the painter, presumably the architect at least as co-author.
- File:Ilgenkampfbahn Plan 1923.jpg - if Hermann Ilgen is the painter of the plan, I doubt that, it will indeed be public domain with PD-old on January 1 2011.
