QuickStatements in Template:Information
Hi Jarekt. I was wondering if you could explain a little bit how, where and why the QuickStatement metadata as generated by/in Template:Information is being used. QuickStatements use display:none'd information but as external systems do not that display:none into account, it ends up in Google and other systems. It also pollutes the scraped data that is used for things like MediaViewer. So if I have a better understanding of it, then I hope that I can suggest some improvements. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 11:09, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
- @TheDJ: The system of QuickStatements tags is managed by Module:TagQS, and the Module:Information is not creating or reading them (at the moment). Those tags are used mostly to pass information from I18n templates used by {{Artwork}} or {{Book}}. Lets pick an example: File:'Courtesan Playing the Samisen' by Isoda Koryusai, c. 1785.jpg. It has {{Artwork}} template with bunch of smaller templates:
- Each one of those templates provide internationalized wikitext displayed in a given field, each one of them also generates QS tags that provide the same data in language independent way. The encoding is very close of what a QuickStatement would be to add the same data to Wikidata. So for example, this file's Creator templates adds
<div style="display: none;">artist QS:P170,Q3155497</div>
to wikitext, which is picked up by Module:Artwork. In case given object does not have Wikidata item or existing item does not have creator (P170) property than Module:Artwork can provide one click way to create new Wikidata item or add properties to the existing one. You can test it by clicking icon. So if {{Information}} template calls {{Other date}} or {{Creator}} than there might be some QS tags floating in the Wikicode, but {{Information}} template does not look for them. The same templates in infoboxes supported by Module:Artwork and Module:Creator modules, might be used to add metadata to Wikidata. Hope that explains things a bit. Let me know is some parts are not clear. --Jarekt (talk) 01:40, 6 January 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- mediawiki2latex is a tool that converts wiki content into the formats of LaTeX, PDF, ODT, and EPUB. The code now runs many times faster due to recent improvements. There is also an optional Docker container you can install on your local machine.
- The way that Random pages are selected has been updated. This will slowly reduce the problem of some pages having a lower chance of appearing. [1]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 January. It will be on all wikis from 11 January (calendar). [2][3]

Recent changes
- Pages that use the JSON contentmodel will now use tabs instead of spaces for auto-indentation. This will significantly reduce the page size. [4]
- Gadgets and personal user scripts may now use JavaScript syntax introduced in ES6 (also known as "ES2015") and ES7 ("ES2016"). MediaWiki validates the source code to protect other site functionality from syntax errors, and to ensure scripts are valid in all supported browsers. Previously, Gadgets could use the
requiresES6
option. This option is no longer needed and will be removed in the future. [5] - Bot passwords and owner-only OAuth consumers can now be restricted to allow editing only specific pages. [6]
- You can now thank edits made by bots. [7]
- An update on the status of the Community Wishlist Survey for 2024 has been published. Please read and give your feedback.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 January. It will be on all wikis from 18 January (calendar). [8][9]
- Starting on January 17, it will not be possible to login to Wikimedia wikis from some specific old versions of the Chrome browser (versions 51–66, released between 2016 and 2018). Additionally, users of iOS 12, or Safari on Mac OS 10.14, may need to login to each wiki separately. [10]
- The
jquery.cookie
module was deprecated and replaced with themediawiki.cookie
module last year. A script has now been run to replace any remaining uses, and this week the temporary alias will be removed. [11]
Future changes
- Wikimedia Deutschland is working to make reusing references easier. They are looking for people who are interested in participating in individual video calls for user research in January and February.

Request
Hi Jarek, I have a great request: could you please delete this pic? Profesor Maćkiewicz thinks is not too good and will provide us with a a better one. Thank you! Boston9 (talk) 06:51, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

Module Tincture
Hi,
I restored previous version on Module:Tincture, as there were errors displayed (instead of tinctures) on all CoA pictures using the template…
Thank you,--Kontributor 2K (talk) 11:06, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
- Kontributor 2K, Thank you for fixing that. I corrected my correction and redeployed. It looks like this time I got it right. --Jarekt (talk) 01:07, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for fixing this,
- On the other hand, do you know if someone intends to go on working on the heraldry modules that Sarang has developped ?
- --Kontributor 2K (talk) 16:01, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- Kontributor 2K, I dont know of any plans. I am quite unfamiliar with heraldry and needs of supporting software. In this case I was just chipping away at files with Lua errors on Category:Pages with script errors. If you know of anything that needs to be fixed I can look at it. --Jarekt (talk) 01:11, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
- Well, everything works fine, although there would be details to fix; also, adding new users to the IgenCoa users table (table of CoA drawers) is currently not needed (new users don't come there so often).
The distab function was fixed, which is great. - --Kontributor 2K (talk) 10:51, 24 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi Jarekt,
I found an issue, for a specifc user's files… (that could occur with some other's, although I didn't notice others yet).
For an example, this file uses the template that shows SVG information with details about software and user.
If french is used, as well as a few other languagues (català, at least), it shows correct information : 'Ce blason a été créé avec Inkscape par xxx', but if english is choosen, as well as many other languages, it shows : 'This coat of arms was created with Inkscape…important by xxx' - '…important' shouldn't be there.
I couldn't find where to solve this, do you think you'd have time to check this…?
--Kontributor 2K (talk) 20:31, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
- Kontributor 2K, I am so confused by {{COAInformation}} template. I finally figured out that the "image" parameter is responsible somehow for the field in question, but how does
{{#invoke:IgenCoa|main|Yr}}
encodes for the information in this row? It seems like "Yr" encodes info that SVG correct, that it shows COA, that it was created by user:Yricordel, that it was created in Inkscape, and that it was created as part of fr:Projet:Blasons. That is 5 separate facts encoded in 2 letters. How would the code differ if Yricordel used a different tool that day, or did this one on behalf of a different project? Or if it was User:Steifer for pl:Wikiprojekt:Herby project, as is the case for File:POL COA Awstacz.svg. I can not find in the template documentation how that is done. Also "important by Yricordel" seems like a bad translation maybe "imported by Yricordel"? As "important" is not a verb. So how would information with and without "important" be encoded? I was trying to experiment with{{#invoke:IgenCoa|main|Yr}}
, but so far did not find how to display the content in a different language. Most templates on Commons use "|lang=xx" parameter, but it does not seem to work. Sorry about the avalanche of questions, but I am bouncing between documentation of several templates and not finding much. Source code is also not very readable full of 1 or 2 letter variable names that do not mean much to me. --Jarekt (talk) 01:06, 28 January 2024 (UTC)- Thank you for looking,
- Changing the tool for Yricordel from Inkscape to TextEditor is done by adding tool~T = | image=Yr/tool~T.
- I found a possible lead in here where the first example stands for stands for : "SVG file created with Inkscape-Important"…
- Actually, "Important" links to Help:Inskape#Inkscape SVG vs. Plain SVG, where this section (at Handling Inkscape SVG) gives more info…
- Going further is currently beyond my knowledge, maybe i'm already far beyond

Recent changes
- The mobile site history pages now use the same HTML as the desktop history pages. If you hear of any problems relating to mobile history usage please point them to the phabricator task.
- On most wikis, admins can now block users from making specific actions. These actions are: uploading files, creating new pages, moving (renaming) pages, and sending thanks. The goal of this feature is to allow admins to apply blocks that are adequate to the blocked users' activity. Learn more about "action blocks". [22][23]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 February. It will be on all wikis from 8 February (calendar). [24][25]
- Talk pages permalinks that included diacritics and non-Latin script were malfunctioning. This issue is fixed. [26]
Future changes
- 24 Wikipedias with Reference Tooltips as a default gadget are encouraged to remove that default flag. This would make Reference Previews the new default for reference popups, leading to a more consistent experience across wikis. For 46 Wikipedias with less than 4 interface admins, the change is already scheduled for mid-February, unless there are concerns. The older Reference Tooltips gadget will still remain usable and will override this feature, if it is available on your wiki and you have enabled it in your settings. [27][28]

Attributed to logic
Hi Jarek, I noticed on File:Crucifixión, atribuida a Ambrosius Benson (Museo Arqueológico Provincial de Ourense).jpg when trying to use the QuickStatements link, it still uses the old way with the (now deleted) P1773 (P1773) qualifier. Maybe you can change it to the new system? See d:Wikidata:WikiProject_Visual_arts/Item_structure#Use_of_creator_(P170)_in_uncertain_cases. Thank you, Multichill (talk) 16:03, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Multichill: Fixed I missed retiring of P1773. I did noticed 2 competing standards and could read both. Now I am only using the new standard. --Jarekt (talk) 22:42, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
Edycje mapek, szkiców walk itp
Pytanie amatora:) Czy mapki (szkice) walk, bitew, potyczek publikowane w polskich publikacjach w latach 1946 - do np 1990 podlegają ochronie autorskiej?
Jeszcze raz dziękuję--keriM (talk) 09:45, 13 February 2024 (UTC)

Technical question
Hi Jarekt, could I ask you a technical question? I wanted to make a small layout change to {{Global maintenance category}}, but it doesn't work. But strangely this edit some times before was working. Have you an idea why? Is this a cache problem and I need just to wait or has it to to with /i18n? Thx a lot already and best Regards --W like wiki good to know 20:41, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
- W like wiki, your small layout change is just to make administration or maintenance of Wikimedia Commons bold, and as far as I can tell it is working. The text looks bold to me. --Jarekt (talk) 22:50, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

Yes, it is just to make the link bold, but I see it only on the /i18n subpage bold, not in the parent page, do you I tried also on an mobile device just to be sure that it has nothing to do with my cache, but still "unbold", hmm.. --W like wiki good to know 23:03, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

Speedy deletion on File:Gaziantep Zeytin Tarlası IMG 9902.jpeg
Just wondering what the story is with File:Gaziantep Zeytin Tarlası IMG 9902.jpeg and why you've tagged it for speedy deletion as {{No license since}}?
Clearly there's an attempt to add a licence, and some automated piece of Lua has broken. It was moved from tr:WP, maybe that did it. Now there's a template call {{Self|GÖBL|cc-a-bp-4.0,3.0,2.5,2.0,1.0}} which is throwing up a Lua error 'Lua error: expandTemplate: template "cc-a-bp-4.0,3.0,2.5,2.0,1.0" does not exist.' That's clearly something broken at our end, not a real licensing issue. And never something that should be deleted without discussion, using the speedy process! Andy Dingley (talk) 02:17, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
- Andy Dingley, someone moved a file from some wikipedia, but did not change licenses. I was hoping the uploader would fix it. I guess I could have also tracked down which wikipedia it was and figure names of matching templates here, but it is really uploder's job. Lua error is not a software issue but deliberate attempt to stop Lua code and display error if a license template does not exist. I am currently working on fixing licenses in all the files that have this issue. --Jarekt (talk) 03:00, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
- So the answer is to burn the file, without even raising it in our forum for such things, without making any effort to fix a mechanical problem? Andy Dingley (talk) 03:06, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
- It is not mechanical problem, since someone uploaded a file with invalid license. The user should be aware that it is a bad upload. I can fix this file but do not want to be doing it for other uploads by the same user, who might be unaware of the issue. --Jarekt (talk) 03:15, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
- Fair enough, but it should have gone through a DR. As it is, speedy deletion seems to be getting used more and more as "simpler deletion", which is something it's never been intended for. Andy Dingley (talk) 03:45, 11 March 2024 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 12 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 13 March. It will be on all wikis from 14 March (calendar). [53][54]
- After consulting with various communities, the line height of the text on the Minerva skin will be increased to its previous value of 1.65. Different options for typography can also be set using the options in the menu, as needed. [55]
- The active link color in Minerva will be changed to provide more consistency with our other platforms and best practices. [56]
- Structured data on Commons will no longer ask whether you want to leave the page without saving. This will prevent the “information you’ve entered may not be saved” popups from appearing when no information have been entered. It will also make file pages on Commons load faster in certain cases. However, the popups will be hidden even if information has indeed been entered. If you accidentally close the page before saving the structured data you entered, that data will be lost. [57]
Future changes
- All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on March 20. This is planned at 14:00 UTC. More information will be published in Tech News and will also be posted on individual wikis in the coming weeks. [58][59]

- The Toolforge Grid Engine services have been shut down after the final migration process from Grid Engine to Kubernetes. [62][63][64]
- Communities can now customize the default reasons for undeleting a page by creating MediaWiki:Undelete-comment-dropdown. [65]
Problems
- RevisionSlider is an interface to interactively browse a page's history. Users in right-to-left languages reported RevisionSlider reacting wrong to mouse clicks. This should be fixed now. [66]

Recent changes
- Web browsers can use tools called extensions. There is now a Chrome extension called Citation Needed which you can use to see if an online statement is supported by a Wikipedia article. This is a small experiment to see if Wikipedia can be used this way. Because it is a small experiment, it can only be used in Chrome in English.
- A new Edit Recovery feature has been added to all wikis, available as a user preference. Once you enable it, your in-progress edits will be stored in your web browser, and if you accidentally close an editing window or your browser or computer crashes, you will be prompted to recover the unpublished text. Please leave any feedback on the project talk page. This was the #8 wish in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey.
- Initial results of Edit check experiments have been published. Edit Check is now deployed as a default feature at the wikis that tested it. Let us know if you want your wiki to be part of the next deployment of Edit check. [76][77]
- Readers using the Minerva skin on mobile will notice there has been an improvement in the line height across all typography settings. [78]

Problems
- Between 2 April and 8 April, on wikis using Flagged Revisions, the "Reverted" tag was not applied to undone edits. In addition, page moves, protections and imports were not autoreviewed. This problem is now fixed. [82][83]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 April. It will be on all wikis from 18 April (calendar). [84][85]

- A new variable
page_last_edit_age
will be added to abuse filters. It tells how many seconds ago the last edit to a page was made. [87]
Future changes
- Volunteer developers are kindly asked to update the code of their tools and features to handle temporary accounts. Learn more.
- Four database fields will be removed from database replicas (including Quarry). This affects only the

Help!
Please see this notice and my talk page to see that I am suddenly the subject of threat of mass deletion of my photographs of scarecrows, on the spurious grounds that they are sculptures. They are effigies, and do not count as copyrightable artworks. (I have called them artworks on my images files, because it is my camera work which makes them so - otherwise they are just temporary effigies, made any old how, for fun).
This trend is extremely worrying, because there is no Commons policy to clarify this situation. If all scarecrow photographs can now suddenly be deleted due to one person's point of view that they are sculptures, then why are they picking only on my photography, and not on the photography of many thousands of effigies, e.g. Guy Fawkes Night effigies, which have been uploaded here since Commons started?
My photographs were taken in good faith that I was breaking no laws. I had the full knowledge and approval of the festival director, when photographing the Minskip scarecrows for Commons, and would be able to provide written evidence of that, by him, if required. I have not done that yet, as I had not thought that it was necessary.
But I would like to know why they are just picking on my photographs? If this is not a general policy, and all the other thousands of photographs of scarecrows and other effigies are to remain untouched by this person's opinion - then this looks like persecution of only my work, which would be rather strange, to say the least.
It is mostly my photography which is the art in this case. Most of the effigies are not artwork at all. Going to these festivals takes a huge amount of time, money and effort for me, since I have no car, and public transport in the UK is inadequate. It takes me a couple of weeks to edit my photographs to make them into artworks. And now my rights to photograph in a legal manner in the street in the UK are being violated, in my opinion. So please would you kindly have a look at the situation? I understand that it is permitted for me to ask an administrator to have a look. I have also asked administrator Mike Peel, but according to his contributions he is not around at present, so I am asking you as well. Thanks. Storye book (talk) 22:30, 20 April 2024 (UTC)

Could I get you to spell "deprecated" correctly? You put "depreciated" (meaning to have lost value; is that a joke of sorts?). There are no "i"s in "deprecated". Thank you, —Uzume (talk) 02:25, 28 April 2024 (UTC)
- Uzume, sorry I had no clue what are you talking about until I read "Why is there confusion between depreciated and deprecated?" on stack exchange. I stand corrected. --Jarekt (talk) 02:59, 28 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Jarekt: I was not aware there was widespread confusion there. Upon reading that thread, I suppose you could change it to "obsolete", since you "broke" it by turning it into an error. Thank you, —Uzume (talk) 10:48, 28 April 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The appearance of talk pages changed for the following wikis: Azerbaijani Wikipedia, Bengali Wikipedia, German Wikipedia, Persian Wikipedia, Hebrew Wikipedia, Hindi Wikipedia, Indonesian Wikipedia, Korean Wikipedia, Dutch Wikipedia, Portuguese Wikipedia, Romanian Wikipedia, Thai Wikipedia, Turkish Wikipedia, Ukrainian Wikipedia, Vietnamese Wikipedia. These wikis participated to a test, where 50% of users got the new design, for one year. As this test gave positive results, the new design is deployed on these wikis as the default design. It is possible to opt-out these changes in user preferences ("Show discussion activity"). The deployment will happen at all wikis in the coming weeks. [93]
- Seven new wikis have been created:
- You can now watch message groups/projects on Translatewiki.net. Initially, this feature will notify you of added or deleted messages in these groups. [101]
- Dark mode is now available on all wikis, on mobile web for logged-in users who opt into the advanced mode. This is the early release of the feature. Technical editors are invited to check for accessibility issues on wikis. See more detailed guidelines.
Problems
- Kartographer maps can use an alternative visual style without labels, by using
mapstyle="osm"
. This wasn't working in previews, creating the wrong impression that it wasn't supported. This has now been fixed. [102]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 30 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 May. It will be on all wikis from 2 May (calendar). [103][104]

Can you check the history of this file? A ton of very weird statement were added by you. Multichill (talk) 20:05, 9 May 2024 (UTC)
- Multichill, that is very bizarre. The file is being used by Institution:Louvre, but I have no clue how it got connected to those statements. In 2022 I was adding digital representation of (P6243) based on SQL queries and Artwork template's "wikidata" parameters, but I do not see how this happen. Also it seems several other users were adding similar bad statements related to items in Louvre. I checked bunch of other photos on popular institution templates but did not see similar edits. --Jarekt (talk) 16:35, 10 May 2024 (UTC)

Reverting
Hello! I'm just wondering why'd you revert my adding of the PD-State of Palestine on official governmental items? RowanJ LP (talk) 15:56, 4 June 2024 (UTC)
- RowanJ LP, Per Commons:Village_pump/Copyright#Template:PD-State_of_Palestine discussion I removed information about flag trademarks from {{PD-State of Palestine}} as trademarks are not related to copyrights. Without the part about the flags, {{PD-State of Palestine}} is equivalent to {{PD-anon-70}} and apply to anonymous works or need to apply to "statute, regulation, Knesset protocol or court decisions". Most of the files I reverted were flags and emblems created by Commons users, so none of the conditions of the template apply to them. Also in the current state, I do not think {{PD-State of Palestine}} is valid, see the discussion, so it will likely need to be changed or deleted. In case it is deleted, I don't want those files (with seemingly valid licenses) to get mixed up in the discussion. --Jarekt (talk) 19:43, 4 June 2024 (UTC)
- I didn't know that this discussion was currently going on, thank you for bringing this up. RowanJ LP (talk) 12:34, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
Pages with camera coordinates from SDC has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Recent changes
- The software used to render SVG files has been updated to a new version, fixing many longstanding bugs in SVG rendering. [136]
- The HTML used to render all headings is being changed to improve accessibility. It was changed last week in some skins (Vector legacy and Minerva). Please test gadgets on your wiki on these skins and report any related problems so that they can be resolved before this change is made in Vector-2022. The developers are still considering the introduction of a Gadget API for adding buttons to section titles if that would be helpful to tool creators, and would appreciate any input you have on that.
- The HTML markup used for citations by Parsoid changed last week. In places where Parsoid previously added the
mw-reference-text
class, Parsoid now also adds thereference-text
class for better compatibility with the legacy parser. More details are available. [137]
Problems
- There was a bug with the Content Translation interface that caused the tools menus to appear in the wrong location. This has now been fixed. [138]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 June. It will be on all wikis from 13 June (calendar). [139][140]
- The new version of MediaWiki includes another change to the HTML markup used for citations: Parsoid will now generate a
<span class="mw-cite-backlink">
wrapper for both named and unnamed references for better compatibility with the legacy parser. Interface administrators should verify that gadgets that interact with citations are compatible with the new markup. More details are available. [141] - On multilingual wikis that use the
<translate>
system, there is a feature that shows potentially-outdated translations with a pink background until they are updated or confirmed. From this week, confirming translations will be logged, and there is a new user-right that can be required for confirming translations if the community requests it. [142]

Request for advice
Hello, Jarekt. I hope you are doing well. I see that you have done a lot of work on date formats. Could you please advise me on how to correct the month format for Slovene (sl) from 'genitive' to 'nominative' in Category:Bojan Kunaver and File:Kamala Harris 2024 - 32.jpg? I have already tried to edit it in Data:DateI18n.tab but there was no effect. --TadejM (t/p) 10:45, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
- TadejM, I will be happy to help. First of all, I noticed that changes to Data:DateI18n.tab do not seem to take immediate effect, so if you change something there you might have to wait a day or two to see if it worked. By the way, I think I see some changes "sl" language in Module:DateI18n/testcases. If it is still not to your liking after some days, please give me some concrete examples of what is {{Date}} giving you now and what do you expect. Or even better add them to Module:DateI18n/testcases. --Jarekt (talk) 12:21, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for the explanation, Jarekt. I am going to test it. --TadejM (t/p) 17:37, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
- The change is now visible in Category:Bojan Kunaver but not (yet?) in File:Kamala Harris 2024 - 32.jpg. --TadejM (t/p) 14:01, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
- @TadejM I see "22. februar 2024 ob 14:19:31" in File:Kamala Harris 2024 - 32.jpg, which is nominative case. --Jarekt (talk) 02:09, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- Great, thanks. Then everything is fine now. --TadejM (t/p) 07:42, 17 June 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- People who attempt to add an external link in the visual editor will now receive immediate feedback if they attempt to link to a domain that a project has decided to block. Please see Edit check for more details. [143]
- The new Community Configuration extension is available on Test Wikipedia. This extension allows communities to customize specific features to meet their local needs. Currently only Growth features are configurable, but the extension will support other Community Configuration use cases in the future. [144][145]
- The dark mode beta feature is now available on category and help pages, as well as more special pages. There may be contrast issues. Please report bugs on the project talk page. [146]
Problems
- Cloud Services tools were not available for 25 minutes last week. This was caused by a faulty hardware cable in the data center. [147]
- Last week, styling updates were made to the Vector 2022 skin. This caused unforeseen issues with templates, hatnotes, and images. Changes to templates and hatnotes were reverted. Most issues with images were fixed. If you still see any, report them here. [148]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 18 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 19 June. It will be on all wikis from 20 June (calendar). [149][150]
- Starting June 18, the Reference Edit Check will be deployed to a new set of Wikipedias. This feature is intended to help newcomers and to assist edit-patrollers by inviting people who are adding new content to a Wikipedia article to add a citation when they do not do so themselves. During a test at 11 wikis, the number of citations added more than doubled when Reference Check was shown to people. Reference Check is community configurable. [151]
- Mailing lists will be unavailable for roughly two hours on Tuesday 10:00–12:00 UTC. This is to enable migration to a new server and upgrade its software. [152]

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Editors will notice that there have been some changes to the background color of text in the diff view, and the color of the byte-change numbers, last week. These changes are intended to make text more readable in both light mode and dark mode, and are part of a larger effort to increase accessibility. You can share your comments or questions on the project talkpage. [153]
- The text colors that are used for visited-links, hovered-links, and active-links, were also slightly changed last week to improve their accessibility in both light mode and dark mode. [154]
Problems
- You can copy permanent links to talk page comments by clicking on a comment's timestamp. This feature did not always work when the topic title was very long and the link was used as a wikitext link. This has been fixed. Thanks to Lofhi for submitting the bug. [155]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 25 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 26 June. It will be on all wikis from 27 June (calendar). [156][157]
- Starting 26 June, all talk pages messages' timestamps will become a link at English Wikipedia, making this feature available for you to use at all wikis. This link is a permanent link to the comment. It allows users to find the comment they were linked to, even if this comment has since been moved elsewhere. You can read more about this feature on Diff or on Mediawiki.org. [158]

Photo Challenge Results
Hello!
I noticed that you are in charge of (or at least you are used to) publishing the monthly photo challenge results. For the April one, I tried to count myself the votes to publish them myself, as they were not available yet (that's not a reproach). But, because I wasn't sure how to do it, I didn't publish them : I don't want to do any mistakes. Now that they are published (thank you!), I have some questions, because I don't get the same results as you.
- I get 218 images, what is your 219th? I noticed that a file was deleted, is that it?
Thank you, Wikisquack (talk) 14:20, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
- Moreover, I get only 95 contributers, not 96. Wikisquack (talk) 20:14, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
- Wikisquack Sorry I was not around last few days. Please see Commons:Photo_challenge/Maintainers_Manual#Convert_Submitting_page_to_Voting_page to read how the results are tabulated. Basically there is a C# code you run on your computer and it does all the tabulating for you, which is very consistent from challenge to challenge. However if you are getting different results than there might be bugs in the code. --Jarekt (talk) 14:15, 28 June 2024 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks. I was using my own python code, so maybe there are some differences. I will take a look! Wikisquack (talk) 19:58, 28 June 2024 (UTC)
- Wikisquack I think it would be great if we had a python code which could run on https://hub-paws.wmcloud.org/ and could either create voting pages or count voting results the way current C# code does. That would allow much wider group of users to help with administration of Photo challenge. --Jarekt (talk) 21:41, 28 June 2024 (UTC)

Hi Jarekt. I hope this finds you well. Please could you help me find the original largest upload picture for this file? Until yesterday it was on en.WP under the same name. Being dated 1953, it had lost its UK copyright, and I tried to transfer it to Commons, but the transfer-to-Commons system refused on the grounds of a hidden something-or-other. So I manually transferred the file to Commons. That manual transfer caused the loss of the file history, the original upload being 2010. Since that 2010 upload to en.WP, bots had reduced the size of the uploaded image. Now that the image is out of copyright, I would like to reinstate the original image size, but I cannot find the original scanned file on my PC. Is there any way for you to find and reinstate that first-uploaded larger version of the file? Apologies for the long explanation. Storye book (talk) 09:15, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
- Storye book, I found and uploaded larger version at https://i.pinimg.com/originals/3a/5e/48/3a5e480912874cbc8314426caa092021.jpg. An admin on En.wiki should be able to see the original upload on Wikipedia. --Jarekt (talk) 12:02, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
- Wow! thank you so much. I think its always worthwhile doing stuff for our railway buffs on WP. They are always appreciative of new additions in that subject, and they contribute so much for us, also. So thank you again. Storye book (talk) 16:03, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
Tech News: 2024-27
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Over the next three weeks, dark mode will become available for all users, both logged-in and logged-out, starting with the mobile web version. This fulfils one of the top-requested community wishes, and improves low-contrast reading and usage in low-light settings. As part of these changes, dark mode will also work on User-pages and Portals. There is more information in the latest Web team update. [159]
- Logged-in users can now set global preferences for the text-size and dark-mode, thanks to a combined effort across Foundation teams. This allows Wikimedians using multiple wikis to set up a consistent reading experience easily, for example by switching between light and dark mode only once for all wikis. [160]
- If you use a very old web browser some features might not work on the Wikimedia wikis. This affects Internet Explorer 11 and versions of Chrome, Firefox and Safari older than 2016. This change makes it possible to use new CSS features and to send less code to all readers. [161][162]
- Wikipedia Admins can customize local wiki configuration options easily using Community Configuration. Community Configuration was created to allow communities to customize how some features work, because each language wiki has unique needs. At the moment, admins can configure Growth features on their home wikis, in order to better recruit and retain new editors. More options will be provided in the coming months. [163]
- Editors interested in language issues that are related to Unicode standards, can now discuss those topics at a new conversation space in MediaWiki.org. The Wikimedia Foundation is now a member of the Unicode Consortium, and the coordination group can collaboratively review the issues discussed and, where appropriate, bring them to the attention of the Unicode Consortium.
- One new wiki has been created: a Wikipedia in Mandailing (
w:btm:
) [164]
Problems
- Editors can once again click on links within the visual editor's citation-preview, thanks to a bug fix by the Editing Team. [165]

Getting back to User_talk:Jarekt/2024#QuickStatements in Template:Information
Sorry, it took me so long to get back to this topic. I've read your response, and from it, I determine that this is fully scoped to template processing, with no external dependencies by other tools that interact with this generated HTML ? In that case, can we please at least mark it with a class, so that this information can be filtered out by Wikimedia when needed ? Example:
<div class="TagQS" style="display: none;">artist QS:P170,Q3155497</div>
Preferably, the information should be in a data attribute, so that the HTML evaluates to not having any textual contents at all:
<span data-TagQS="artist QS:P170,Q3155497"></span>
Using display:none
to hide content is an anti-pattern, because it is only visually hiding it and the information still ends up in search engine descriptions, Wikimedia search and sometimes the Wikimedia Mediaviewer as something like: "1887date QS:P571,+1887-00-00T00:00:00Z/9" which is an issue i'd really like to get rid of. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 20:58, 4 July 2024 (UTC)
- @TheDJ: Thanks for replying, and some good timing as I was just thinking about changing the the format of those tags per request from User:Verdy p at Module talk:TagQS. You are correct that those tags do not interact with other tools (that I know of). They are created by lua modules using Module:TagQS and possibly some templates and are read by other lua modules. I like your suggestion of
<span data-TagQS="artist QS:P170,Q3155497"></span>
or maybe<span data-TagQS="artist QS:P170,Q3155497"/>
. Verdy_p suggestion was almost the same. I will start working on this. --Jarekt (talk) 22:27, 4 July 2024 (UTC)- I suggested using "bdi" instead of "span" to avoid any inclusion problems (with a demo). verdy_p (talk) 04:42, 5 July 2024 (UTC)
- OK, I will use "bdi". --Jarekt (talk) 13:00, 5 July 2024 (UTC)

Template:Own or another
Hi Jarekt,
Some template related to {{Own}} have been modified, the result is now that the label Own work appears in the {{COAInformation}} and in the {{Information}}, at least, after the {{Attribs}} and on the same line, whereas it was on the line above without the need for a <br>,
In both examples, in the code the {{Own}} precedes the {{Attribs}}, and should be on the line above (as it was this morning CET):
Example 1
Example 2
Do you think you could help in solving this ?
I did not find which module has been altered…
--Kontributor 2K (talk) 13:53, 06 July 2024 (UTC)
- Edit : If one replaces {{Attribs with {{AttribSVG, it displays fine.
- --Kontributor 2K (talk) 14:01, 06 July 2024 (UTC)
- Kontributor 2K That is odd, Example 2 still does not look right to me. I can look into it. --Jarekt (talk) 14:29, 6 July 2024 (UTC)
- Example 2 modified, displays ok with AttribSVG,
- Kontributor 2K (talk) 14:30, 06 July 2024 (UTC)
- Kontributor 2K That is odd, Example 2 still does not look right to me. I can look into it. --Jarekt (talk) 14:29, 6 July 2024 (UTC)
- Jarekt, I give up, as none of the templates used by Attribs have been modified today (unless I missed one), except the TemplateBox which is unrelated here…
- Kontributor 2K (talk) 15:16, 06 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Verdy p: would your recent changes to Module:Iteration could have caused different behavior of {{Attribs}} template? --Jarekt (talk) 19:59, 6 July 2024 (UTC)
- I have not changed these two templates or module today. And if it was working this CET morning, I've not been online most of the day, from about 10:00 to 20:30 CEST. verdy_p (talk) 20:02, 6 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Verdy p: I was thinking that maybe those changes took some days to get noticed. --Jarekt (talk) 20:06, 6 July 2024 (UTC)
- And anyway I still don't see any problem of rendering. The last change I made to Iterations module is completely unrelated, and was a couple of days ago with an option for generating category links in list of characters (for now only used in two "small" lists of CJK compatibility characters, which are being completed, this is purely optional, and without this option explicitly passed nothing changed), in a function not used by the examples above and never in any file description page or information box. verdy_p (talk) 20:08, 6 July 2024 (UTC)
Hi,
I went to see again the file Example 2, it happens that actually the problem also appears with the {{AttribSVG}}.
As the template text is longer, one has to enlarge the browser's window to see the issue, which I hadn't noticed earlier

Voting: Photo challenge/2024 - June - Mushrooms/Voting
Hello there Jarekt,
In previous editions of the Photo challenge, it has happened that entries have inexplicably disappeared from the competition before the voting. Now it has happened again! I'm not so much interested in knowing the reason why my two entries in round: Commons:Photo challenge/2024 - June - Mushrooms/Voting have disappeared, as that they will be up for voting in this edition of the contest. For example. File:Tropic fungus.jpg has been excluded for some reason? I photographed the mushroom on 27 April 2015 while visiting Taman Negara National Park on my trip to Malaysia that year.
Sincerely

- Björn Söderlund I definitely did something wrong while creating the voting page. I apologize for it. I rerun the codes generating those pages and merged the results, and it seems quite a few entries were affected. Sorry about it. I will check the other voting page. --Jarekt (talk) 19:08, 7 July 2024 (UTC)
- Oh there they are, thanks!
- I discovered the error quite early, no harm done.
- Have a good day,

- EACC80, It is great that Stadtarchiv released the images under cc by sa 4, but how do you know about it? If they posted it on their website than you probably do not need VRTS ticket (although it still might be better), but if it was not published then they should send the permission to VRTS. How many files are covered by the permission? If only some than you can upload them and send the list to Herrn Neumann, but if couple thousand than it might be easier to create a license template, like for example Template:Walters Art Museum license. Sorry for not being able to reply in German. --Jarekt (talk) 02:32, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
