Hello, MarnixR!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

This message was added automatically by Nikbot, if you need some help about it please read the text above again and follow the links in it, if you still need help ask at the   Commons:Help desk in any language you like to use. --Nikbot 07:21, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:TROwen.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:TROwen.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

Source / author for a few photos

edit

Hi! We talked earlier on vls.wiki and you have now moved the photos to Commons. I added Information to all the files. I have a question about 3 of the files:

 1. File:RoelsHalletoren.jpg - Is it correct that the engraving/drawing was made by vls:Gustaaf Roels? Do you know how old it is? And do you remember where you found it? The license should probably be changed to PD-old-70.
 2. File:StafRoels.JPG - is the painting made by vls:Gustaaf Roels? If not do you know who made it?
 3. File:GustaafRoels.jpg - Can you remember where you found the photo? And do you know who the original photographer is and when it was taken? Unless you are the original photographer. But if it is vls:Gustaaf Roels and he died in 1945 it would make you almost 100 years old :-)

I forgot File:250pxStJansHuisMolen.jpg. Is it originally made by Jos Roels? If yes then Jos Roels has the copyright and it is only free if Jos Roels died more than 70 years ago. If you got a permission from Jos Roels then it should be send to COM:VRT. --MGA73 (talk) 13:56, 19 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
250pxStJansHuisMolen.jpg
Yes, this an etching printed off by my father Jos Roels. However, he died in 2002, and as such permission for puclication in any Wikipedia was not really something that could be contemplated. I have the original in my possession and have taken a picture of it (or scanned it, I can't quite remember), and published it at the same time (probably July 2009) as the VLS article "Windmeulens van West-Vloandern". Strictly speaking you could say that Jos Roels has the copyright over the original, whereas I could claim copyright over the picture I took of it. Also, can family members inherit the copyright if their father who had the original copyright has died? MarnixR (talk) 15:13, 19 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
RoelsHalletoren.jpg
Yes, Gustaaf Roels was an engraver employed by the local printer Ancot, and in this capacity he produced the plan of Bruges on ten large lithograpic stones, based on the original copper plates of Marcus Gerards. Prints off these are in my possession, and I have scanned the relevant portions to create the image used in the wiki. Full details can be found in https://theroelsmalletfamilyhistory.wordpress.com/r004-gustave-francois-roels/, which is also available as an external link from the VLS Wikipedia page.
StafRoels.jpg
Yes, the painting was made by Gustaaf Roels. The actual painting is in my possession, and I have taken the picture on 5 April 2008.
GustaafRoels.jpg
The picture comes from my family archives (Gustaaf Roels is my great-grandfather), and has been scanned by me. The image shows Gustaaf Roels at the age of 66, i.e. in 1935. I don't know who took the original picture, but since I scanned the image, and the original picture taker is likely to be dead for quite some time, I felt I could take ownership of the scanned image as displayed on the VLS Wikipedia. Thank you. I have fixed the 3 firs files. The copyright belong to the creator and after that it goes to the hiers. So if you are the hier of the works then the copyright belongs to you now. About 250pxStJansHuisMolen.jpg did your father create the drawing or did he just print it? --MGA73 (talk) 15:21, 19 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
He engraved the image on a zinc plate, and then printed a limited set of prints. Hence he is both the creator and the printer. 2A00:23C7:21B8:B100:19B0:DAB9:A34:466C 15:56, 19 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
