Regarding the copyright status of images from Nazi Germany, I've asked the question here. We should know shortly what the status is on this. --Quasipalm 02:04, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
- Resolved. See: Template_talk:PD-Germany. "As of January 1, 2005, any German photograph first published prior to January 1, 1955 would be in the public domain. So would any photograph taken prior to January 1, 1955 that was hitherto unpublished." --Quasipalm 02:06, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
- No, I don't think that qualifies as resolved. See the differences on Lichtbild & Lichtbildwerk. --Melanom 02:58, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

removal of categories
edithello Melanonm,
Thank you for your message. I have to disagree with that. If an image is already listed in an article, and that article is in the right category, it is not necessary to double-list them. An image is either in an article, or in a category. If a user wishes to put the image into an article, the user may do so. However to double-list creates confusion and is a further burden on the scarce memory space of the servers. For example the image Image:ChusonjiNogakudo.jpg is already listed in the article Iwate Prefecture, what exactly is the point in having it in the category "Hiraizumi, Iwate" again? with kind regards Gryffindor 09:48, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
- There is no "burden on the scarce memory space of the servers" that appears through category inclusion as opposed to article inclusion, that's a myth. It's also no double-listing, as the inclusion in articles is simply not the same as inclusion in categories. You may be unfamiliar with essential tools like Duesentrieb's CatScan. I leave it to your imagination what useful purposes get lost if you uncategorize an image simply because it is in an article (for instance: finding images that are included in two different categories at once). Duesentrieb himself, IIRC, also advocated using articles as well as categories until both systems can be sensibly merged into one. --Melanom 16:07, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
- I don't know if you can speak German, but I have been criticsed by German users for putting images into categories instead of articles, since I prefer categories. Now I get criticised from a user like you for leaving images in articles and cleaning them out from the categories. So either way it's not possible to get everyone satisfied. If you have looked at my contributions, you will see that almost 90% of the time I put images in categories and create new categories since so many are still missing. I am going to continue to do that, but also clean out categories where I think it is necessary. If you feel strongly about your particular case of Noh images, I am not going to argue about this further and leave it at that, since it's not really that many images we are talking about here in this case. with kind regards Gryffindor 19:51, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
- I do speak a bit of German but prefer English as a lingua franca on Commons. Anyway, I don't think national sentiments should matter either way. I am also not targetting you personally. I simply don't see the argument against categories. --Melanom 19:54, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

rv of my pictures
editWhat is wrong with my uploaded pictures? The copyright-status was missing, I corrected this. What was wrong? Why do you revert this? Azu 18:40, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
- Because you do not own the copyright to the drawings, simple as that. --Melanom 08:22, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
Hi. You asked me about the OTRS permission on this image.
I must first inform you that I have a lot less time now, so I can't be online 10 hours/day anymore, at least not most days.
I did ask user:Bastique about this image yesterday, and he informed me that it was not tagged because of neglect. There were several other images they didn't tag, which he listed on the image talk page.
Hi, there is a little mistake. You warned me about this file writing that there were no source nor author... In fact, I wrote the source (Lectures pour tous, a French newspaper in 1916) and even the author of the painting M. Aranson ! What can I write more??--Sebb 18:56, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
- My bad, sorry. I got too catched up in cleaning out those Rasputin pictures. No offense, --Melanom 06:46, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
Re: Flickrreview
editThe tagging should be a bot process, however the review pretty much has to be by humans. I don't want this scheme to allow any registered user to validate licenses, it doesn't give us that much licensing assurance like that. The admin-only policy is to get a pretty good list of "approved checkers" for right now. In the longer term, there should be a list of validated users (to include admins and others), which is held somewhere. These are teething problems, but by allowing all admins to do reviewing now we can make a start. It might be worth setting up a full blown project overarching FlickrLickr and this scheme for Flickr imagery.--Nilfanion 15:45, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
Categories
editPlease stop adding categories to other categories. Most of your additions have been wrong and I already had to correct a lot of them. --Melanom 06:56, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
- What's wrong? I thought that these categories ought to relate them,and these are reasonable.(ex category:miko->category:kimono,category:Festivals of Japan,etc.)--Mikomaid 02:08, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
This file's name is wrong. This torii (at Heian Shrine) is located in Kyoto City, not in Okazaki City.--Lombroso 15:21, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

About PD-Japan-old
editHi Melanom, in case you are new to Commons and not familiar with the license, please take another look at Template:PD-Japan-oldphoto. Whoever the author was and whatever the copyright status once may have been, the copyright itself on any image that was taken before December 31, 1956 in Japan has expired and the image is in public domain. Please kindly remove all the delete notice you put on PD-Japan-old. Thanks. WTCA 17:17, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
- Copyright status in Japan has expired - correct, but in other countries (and thus, according to most copyright-laws, in other Wikipedia language versions) these copyrights have not neccessarily expired. Thus the author must be known to determine whether images are free of copyright status and can thus be used in other Wikipedia language versions as well. --Melanom 08:45, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
This is not neccessarily true. Please study Commons:First steps/Quality and description. Under "Author": Author(s) of the file. "If you don't know any individual, use the name of the institution(s) which released it." There are literally thousands of images in Commons with unknown authorship, but which are PD due to age.--MChew 14:45, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
- I reiterate: PD due to age according to the template is applicable to the legal territory of Japan only. This does not neccessarily lead to any copyright or authorship rights ceasing in other legal territories where the original authors may very well claim copyright and authorship rights due to more generalized international conventions. --Melanom 22:45, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:Oskar Dirlewanger.jpg
editMelanom, Could you be more specific about what information is missing in Image:Oskar Dirlewanger.jpg? It has the source information proving it was published in Poland before 1998. --Jarekt (talk) 18:31, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
- It needs author information, otherwise it won't be able to get used in other Wikipedias than the Polish one due to "lex loci protectionis". --Melanom (talk) 19:17, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
Image:Lasquier.jpg
editThe copyright law of Poland is that all photos done on the Polish territory before and during WWII are in the public domain. Miss Lasquier is a Polish girl who has been killed by the nazis in Poland. Her identity photo made by the Polish authorities is so in the PD.

Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 20:07, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
