Worn vs worn out edit

Good day. "Worn" and "Worn out" are not the same thing. Wiktionary gives definition "Worn out - Damaged and useless due to hard or continued use." [1]; other dictionaries similarly. Something worn, slightly damaged but still usable, is by definition not yet worn out. That's my understanding at any rate. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 17:10, 25 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Children's book illustration edit

This is a wonderful gallery -- it brings back many memories of books I grew up with. Thank you for creating it.

A suggestion -- before putting a lot of work into something like this, take a hard look at the copyright status of the files you are using. Book covers are often uploaded by people who don't understand that copyright lasts a long time. That is certainly true here.

I have put {{Delete}} tags on the following, all of which are either in your gallery or are files from artists in the gallery. You may want to comment on the DRs.

Thanks for the heads up on copyright status. I have been going through the book categories, noticing how many recent covers are uploaded, and am not sure how to tell if something is a self created cover for a self published book, a genuine OTRS/ Creative Commons licensed release, or not allowed. I have proposed for speedy deletion some obvious copyvios, others im not as sure of. I will try to be as diligent as my understanding allows. Actually, it really bothers me that people upload copyvios here. If they are savvy enough to do this, they should at least try to understand how we work, and if they are deliberately ignoring copyvio, well, screw them, they are putting the project at risk. particularly troubling is how images get placed here, then used at wikipedias, and dont get caught, despite the WPs being more heavily patrolled. I was in the book industry for 10 years, so i have some skill at understanding fair use, free use, copyright, etc. Mercurywoodrose (talk) 18:17, 2 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
As a rule of thumb -- if the book was first published in the USA, anything after 1922 is suspect. If published elsewhere, 1885 is a good date to use (author born in 1860, age 25 at writing, lived to be 83, died in 1943, copyright is mostly 70 years pma). Of course, in copyright matters, all generalities are false.
Self-published books, as a rule, are out of scope -- we don't keep works by non-notable people. I usually see if the book appears on Amazon -- if, so it may be marginal, but at least it has some circulation. And thanks again for your gallery. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 18:29, 2 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
To your revised comment -- Copyright is widely misunderstood -- and the fact that the US rules are so complex doesn't help -- see File:PD-US table.svg -- so it doesn't surprise me that many people just don't get it. While we work hard on it, we don't really have the people to keep up with the onslaught -- roughly 8,000 new images a day. A year ago, we were deleting around 2,000 images a day, now we are doing roughly half that, probably because we have fewer people. Since I don't think our uploaders have changed their habits, the numbers suggest that we now have 1,000 new images a day that ought to be deleted. .     Jim . . . .   Thank you very much for your comment . I felt really good today because I have faith that you understand many things of commons . I noticed you're assuming in good faith. Faith moves mountains and changes people . You're a good person who has shown me a new path in many ways. I have learned to use the tool to check pictures copyright violations . You asked me not to write you on your talk page, however, this is the only way to communicate commons users . I will always be available to you if you need help , do not hesitate, and I will be waiting with open arms carefully when you decide to go home. I hope you do not take my templates personally deleted . All this is in favor of having a clean commons or use content without copyright problems . The other day I was reviewing recent changes saw such problems . Cleaning should begin with oneself. A hug The Photographer (talk) 12:53, 11 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Keeping edit

I perfectly understand that the photograph is poor, and agree with you about that. The point is, that until we have a photo with better resolution and definition we have to keep this one as long as it is free and in scope. No point in deleting it and stay without. When a better one will be uploaded then we can consider deleting the current one. Best Regards. -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 12:07, 14 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open! edit

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Native elements edit

In June, 2013, you tagged a bunch? slew? passel? of categories for discussion, all relating to native elements. I commented on the silver one, but I am uneasy about necro posting in such an old discussion. Should I post to the other discussions I have thoughts about anyway, or is there something technical that can be done to revitalize the listings/discussions? 71.234.215.133 02:20, 24 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

I have no idea if there is a proper procedure for commenting on very old CFD's where the comments will be acknowledged in any fashion. If I was going to try to make this work, i would probably be obnoxious and nominate again for discussion (there may be a way to RELIST, i dont know how). There is no harm in commenting at old CFD's, but i dont know if it will do much. if you do anything that works, let me know, and do feel free to renominate and blame me for the idea. i have renominated recently some categories which never got resolved, but since have been emptied, and that seemed to be ok here.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 03:22, 24 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Relisting Categories for Discussion edit

Hi, I saw that you had a question about relisting categories. In principle, this is not done while the discussion is still open, even if it is very old and not much discussion has happened. Rather old discussions do get closed, too, but the backlog at COM:CFD is much longer than for COM:DEL, as there aren't very many admins active there. What you can do is add new comments to the old discussion, to attempt to revive the discussion. In the particular case of Category:Over, the old discussion wasn't really that old as far as CFDs go, it was still visible on the CFD main page.

The long backlog and lack of discussion is indeed a problem (as you can see one paragraph above). Maybe we do need a guideline for relisting categories, or some technical way of inviting more discussion. At the moment, though, we don't have it. --rimshottalk 07:34, 28 February 2014 (UTC) -->Reply
