Feedback for Commons Android app edit

Hello,

Thanks for uploading photos to Commons via the Commons Android app! :) We (the developers of the app) have recently submitted a Project Grant proposal for the app, detailing our plans for the app in 2019. As a user of the app, we would love to hear your thoughts on it, if you have the time.

Cheers, Misaochan (talk) 11:10, 12 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Sorry I did not reply. The main problem with the app is that it does not seem to immitate the actual website records. For example if I make a change if I label a photo "Bristol West" then make a change to "Bristol East" the wiki entry shows correctly but the app remains "West". Second the app can show the photo twice and you think you have a duplicate but on the website all is well. Other than that, it would be nice to be able to make edits within the app. Other than that, its great and I love it. Over 200 photos and counting including the valued "nearby places". Onwards....... Wikicommons ap edit

Just this : Wiki needs to make it easier to allow changes, in particular deletions of incorrect uploads. If wiki is concerned about wholesale deletion, make the deletion period for one hour limit after upload. It is possible to upload an incorrect or incomplete jpg and then you are at the mercy of an online request which may or may not be granted. This leads to 3 outcomes. 1) Bad jpgs on wiki plus the corrected (and thus duplicated) jpg. 2) For lesser errors like missing geocode/location you have to go to the desktop page to fix it. 3) Reluctance to upload good jpgs because users are frightened of cluttering up wiki with incomplete or incorrect files. Thankyou. Peter Peter Glyn (talk) 22:45, 12 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

The app has come far, in the past year or two. A year ago it usually crashed when I uploaded a picture, leaving me with no picture either in the phone or in the Website. That seems to have been fixed. The app didn't know when I walked to another place to snap a picture, so in the big city the "Nearby" map showed a hundred targets, none of them near me. So, the really buggy parts have been repaired. Currently, it is merely missing several features that would be pleasant. Very few people are working on the app; it's somewhat a struggling orphan in the Wikiverse, so I expect new features will be added slowly, and cautiously to avoid making it buggy and unstable again.
As an old retired fellow, I walk or cycle near my home and farther places, and snap pictures. If it's an unphotographed Wikidata point, the Commons App shows it to me and I use the app to fill that point. Small thrill. I also carry my "real camera" which sometimes gets a better picture especially when zoom is needed. More sophisticated actions await my return home to my "real computer" with big screen and all, for which the Mediawiki software is designed. As for killing a picture because I did it badly or some glitch damaged it, well, why care? I have uploaded many thousands of pictures, hundreds of which are not bad, and those are the important ones. A few have been killed for inadvertently violating someone's copyright or privacy. Anyway I do not think this is a very urgent feature addition to the mobile app. Jim.henderson (talk) 13:39, 6 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi John. Thanks for your reply. But my most recent question was not about deletions. It was about something that worked in May but has stopped working in June. The "nearby" feature I assume is to allow wiki to amass at least one photo of all important landmarks according to some catalogue or other. So it asks for, for example, mileposts. In May any photo was linked to an item and the item was marked complete by the geo marker turning green. Now this is not happening, which makes the photo redundant. I agree I am an older guy and I wander the local area and add to wiki commons as I go. But I, personally, am not interested in mileposts or bridges and if the wiki app isnt working then there is no point.

Finally I agree enhancements can wait but this item is about something thst did work and now doesnt. I am just alerting wiki to the fact. I have several examples.

All the best Peter. Peter Glyn (talk) 14:10, 6 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Sorry to be so late; busy categorizing and geotagging old photos and a few new ones. The catalogue of photographed and unphotographed points is Commons:Wikidata which is the Wikiempire database of everything that might ever be mentioned in Wikipedia, and more. Many other databases are dumped into it, ahh, that is adapted and adopted into it. Thus, cycling through Brooklyn I see on the "Nearby" map public parks too small to have a tree, and cinemas that were demolished before even you and I were born. Some points are described only in German, and some have inaccurate locations. A few have inaccurate descriptions. I have speculated what source database produced these entries, but haven't sought an answer. So, no, nobody has adjudged these places as important enough to deserve a photograph; they are merely things for which a location is known. I fill in the blanks anyway, if the thing actually exists. It's not difficult, and who knows?
I was snapping Wikiphotos for years before the Commons app and WikiShootMe were invented to make maps. Indeed, I was doing that before I had a mobile phone. Thinking about our little discussion, I took a look at my Uploads page, and realized that in the past month I have uploaded fewer than usual pictures, even fewer that are good enough to desire to illustrate an article, and none by the Commons app, so I don't know whether a point changes color for my pictures. It's possible you're having a problem with obsolete software. My Moto G7 Power is running Android 9 Build PPOS29.114-134-13 and Commons version 2.13~d950f7219. My guess is, probably I have no accurate idea of the real problem. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:57, 9 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jim I am going to just go back to adding photos that interest me. I think that is what everyone else does anyway. Just in case a techy from wiki ever reads this thread here is an example of one that worked. https://m.wikidata.org/wiki/Q35626382 It is these Q pages that I found so interesting and spurred me to try to link my photos with the nearby feature. But without the nearby places feature working, I am unable to make the link to the Q page myself. Thanks to everyone. Its been interesting. Peter. Peter Glyn (talk) 06:08, 9 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Heh. I was busy with cat wrangling and forgot to reply. For me, WikiShootMe is the way to hunt for nearby targets. It shows not only which places have Wikidata photos or don't (green dot or red) but also provides a tiny circle with direct link to the English Wikipedia page. There, I can easily see the pictures themselves, already selected by some previous editor. Often I think I can improve on the old picture, and that's where the Commons App comes in. It has nicer features for uploading a picture. And of course sometimes the previous editor made a bad choice of photo. Having been there and seen the place with my own eyes, I can better judge which photos best describe it. Do carry on walking and photographing, one way or another. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:26, 14 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jim. Thank you again. I just published my first photo on wikishootme and it worked. Plus the locale shows as NOT needing a photo in the app. The only problem is that I cannot edit and add to the summary in wikicommons but that may just be a permissions issue. I can live with that. All the best. Peter Peter Glyn (talk) 10:15, 14 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

So, Peter, it seems edting after upload is not a problem anymore for you. The main advantage for me of uploading by the Commons app is that it suggests categories. Last year there was loose talk about making Wikidate replace categories, but the idea seems to have died and won't be revived for years if ever. So, the main way of editors finding illustrations for their articles is through the category tree.
However, the categories that Commons app suggests are often incomplete, irrelevant, vague, or simply wrong, which calls for edting them with hotcat and otherwise. Indeed, cat wrangling is the thing you will see most in my "contributions" record, since I categorize many pictures of places I am unlikely ever to see. Having adjusted categories, sometimes I find my pictures being used in ways I never imagined. You will also see in my record that most of my uploads are by Upload Wizard, which for me means with the big computer, using pictures from my real camera that has zoom and other features.
Alas, some of our best photographers remain uninterested in categorizing, so some of us wranglers look after them. Most uploaders don't consistently produce excellence and get such special treatment, so any of their uncategorized pictures that are excellent will never be noticed and never illustrate Wikipedia. Their effort is wasted. Jim.henderson (talk) 02:09, 20 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jim. I dont want to take up any more of your valuable time. You have been an immense help to me and I am learning so much. Suffice to say my issues are resolved. I am going to try hotcat but more than this, I have a real interest in just documenting and hopefully provide a valuable contribution to wikicommons. Regards Peter Peter Glyn (talk) 17:57, 21 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Splendid, Peter. I ought to put some of this into an essay. One other trick, turn on the geotagging feature of your camera phone. Commons:Geocoding is a big help; it puts the photo on many maps including WikiShootMe. I often use geotags to identify miscategorized photos. Jim.henderson (talk) 15:50, 23 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Categorical edit

Hi, Peter. Pleasant to see you are still at it, with both old pictures and new. You might want to add a few more categories to many pictures. For example, the toy train that represents a particular locomotive can get Category:British Rail Class 67 which would attract the attention of our locomotive experts who can classify it further and increase the possibility of other editors using it for illustration. A good picture is better if it gets the correct attention, whilst a bad picture is not made worse. I've even had other photographers either repair my poor picture (adjust brightness contour or keystone distortion or whatever) or go to the place and rephotograph it properly. Jim.henderson (talk) 14:01, 5 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jim Delighted to hear from you. I didnt want to bug you. Lots to say.

1. How do I find a link to send you a message. There is nothing in my profile that says 'message another member"

2 I will do as you say and add some more categories. I was forbearing because another member warned me not to overcategorise. Looks like I need a goldilocks category. Not too much not too little.

3. This is the big one. A lot of what wikishootme wants are pretty ugly buildings. There are a lot that do not appeal to me. So I created a second profile : Probinaries and there are about 55 photos on there linked to the wikishootme Q numbers. I therefore keep peter glyn for photos that I like. Sometimes the Q object appeals to me or the weather is good. In that case it stays on peter glyn. I hope you approve.

4. My hobby is model railways and real railways. I do not know which hobby supports which. During lockdown I decided to take some shots of my models and include the make and model. I am sure there is a market for this and you have confirmed, so I will continue with your approval. I currently own 10 then plus any new ones will be my contribution. The scenery behind is my layout.

6. My enjoyment of wikishootme has grown. I visited Bedford a few weeks back. About 160 miles away. I was able to add about 6 photos of a place that is not my local area. This is what I enjoy doing but lockdown due to the virus makes it difficult.

7. Currently also going thru my photos to date and getting errors fixed. Looking pretty good at this point

8. Jim I made a big blunder on one photo. I uploaded a plate of food instead of a tavern. Then I replaced with the correct photo and both got deleted. Great! Then I uploaded a fresh photo. It shows linked to the Q number but when you look there, it doesnt show. Here is the link. https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Railway_Inn-Tafarn_Rheilffordd.jpg#mw-jump-to-license

If you can advise I would appreciate

Trust you are well. I think that is enough from me for now. I will add categories later on. Many thanks Peter Peter Glyn (talk) 14:38, 5 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Much to say, and I opened this conversations expecting an idle few days. No, several things came up. No big problem; when I'm busy I don't answer. Time is again short, so I'll let several of your points wait.
  1. We talk to each other in our Talk Pages. Our signatures make the link. Use the "New Section" tab at the top of mine, but first take a quick look at other recent conversations. The big advantage of doing it on-Wiki is that we can be nosy, seeing what's happing among our friends and buttin in when we have something helpful to say. There is a way of E-mailing but it isn't very important because most concerns do not call for privacy.

Station under bridge
  1. Bad categorization takes a few different forms but the most common is redundancy. For example, this picture is categorized as a station and a bridge. It doesn't have a category for what railway it is, because that's a parent category of the station cat, thus redundant. It doesn't have a category for all the arch bridges in New Jersey or all the deck arch bridges in the United States, because those again are parents of this arch cat.
  2. A second username is frowned upon; some might accuse you of being abusive. This can be alleviated, but oops, I must go! Oh, Commons:Username policy isn't quite the right page but might help. Jim.henderson (talk) 16:04, 7 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Oh dear. Innocent mistake. I will shut my second name down by tagging the page. Chalk it down to over enthusiasm. Thanks for the heads up. Peter Glyn (talk) 17:55, 7 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Promise last message. Sorry Jim. I know you are busy. But just to finish. The second account has been deleted so its now just peter glyn. I do have a fun custom author name set up in the app, I use it as a bit of fun but it is within my peter glyn profile and allowed. All the best. Stay safe and thanks for all your help to a rookie. I will be fine now. Cheers. Peter Peter Glyn (talk) 07:54, 9 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Geotags in Wales edit

Just a quick hi. I have been enjoying posting photos relevant to wiki requirements. I had my first photo replaced and mine was given a link, as you predicted will happen from time to time. Great to see all working as it should.

All my photos are geo coded except my model railway as these would be my home.

All the best for holiday season, your thanksgiving is soon. Peter Peter Glyn (talk) 10:42, 13 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Peter. A new header once in a while serves to break up the monotony for readers; besides each other we're writing for our colleagues and for prosterity, if any care.
I love geotags; have loved maps ever since childhood. That's why I am pleased to look at geotag maps and see where things are, but the more important reason is that each tagged photo gets a little dot on the various maps of photos. Thus, a couple weeks ago when cycling through the South Bronx (not heavily photographed, due to an obsolete reputation for danger) I dutifully snapped some small, pretty but boring community gardens that were on the map, as well an imposing church that was not. The garden pictures are probably a waste, but some day the church will be mentioned in an article about the street or neighborhood or architect or whatever, and an assiduous editor will notice the dot and use my photo. That's the theory, anyway. Same again this past Saturday, passing through northern Brooklyn on my way to meet a biker gang at a restaurant. I got a few of each kind of target. And I could be wrong about the gardens and former restaurants; maybe one will be connected to a famous scientist or infamous crime or some such thing.
Social life is rather limited for me. Cycling groups are not all totally afraid of the plague, and many restaurants have tables in the street, so sometimes I get a combination of exercise, conviviality, and good food. Wikpedia events, astronomy events and my other usual activities are all, at best, just video conferences now, and far more boring. Come to think of it, today is about the time I would be returning by train from Wikiconference North America in Toronto. Next year, probably the vaccines will calm the concerns. It's been almost 50 years since I visited Toronto; I have certainly changed and probably the city has, too.
No family feasts or similar holidays; family is mostly a long day's journey away and nobody's going. I stayed in the big city when they scattered, because there's so much fun to be had. Not this year. At least the iddleness affords plenty of time to categorize and curate Wikiphotos from the 21st century, and drawings and lithographs from previous centuries, and sometimes I get out. I hope things are going well for you, Peter. Jim.henderson (talk) 19:12, 13 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Aha ! Getting the hang of this. Our discussion has a potential audience. So that is great, I took a photo of a telephone box that was on maps and nearby was a monument that was not. My blue dot monument photo might thus be picked up when someone looks up the green dot telephone Gotcha. With the lifting of lockdown there is now so much scope. Also the app has been fixed so its a good alternative to wikishootme. Best. Peter. Peter Glyn (talk) 19:35, 13 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

With the Mediawiki software, everybody in the world with Web access can see what we have typed, be it prose or metadata or anything else. However, those without an account seldom learn how to use the History tab to peek in at everything I do, or any other user account.
In former years we had maps with arrows to show where the camera was pointing. That was dropped due to changes at Google and elsewhere, but I still adjust the arrows in the Location template, hoping that the feature will return. With the arrow feature, the maps can show that the two adjacent camera dots are for two pictures in different directions, thus encouraging further investigation.
Alas, New York's infection numbers are rising again, so again my activities away from home are more restricted. The Philadelphia online discussion today at en:Wikipedia:Meetup/Philadelphia/WikiSalon 2020-11-14 was more interesting to me than most. I got a chance to answer some questions about pictures, copyright and other matters. Too bad there wasn't time to get very deeply into geotag matters. I was pleased to "meet" there a young Russian chemistry student who promised to translate some material about the Soviet Venera series of space probes, long before she was born. The world is getting a great many bright, capable adults for whom the Cold War isn't even a memory. Life goes on, thank goodness.Jim.henderson (talk) 22:55, 14 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Photos brought over from Flickr edit

I would like to explain the above situation as it applies to me and ask what can and cannot be done.

Okay I joined Flickr in about 2008 and closed my account in about 2016. I joined wiki commons in 2018 and have enjoyed uploading relevant photos ever since. A while back I discovered that my Flickr photos had been uploaded to wiki commons by a user who has since been deleted for using multiple accts.

The user was https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Russavia

The photos are https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Photographs_by_Peter_Broster

I don't object to this unauthorised upload per se but there are a lot of errors in the photos, some I have user rights to fix, others I don't. To clean up over 1500 photos will be lot of work. An example is incorrect creative commons, over categorisation, mis-spellings, wrong file names etc etc. I would also like to change the author name.

"Utopia" for me would be to move all the files over to peter_glyn with access to everything but I expect this is not possible. My other big concern is if I start amending information on loads of photos that are currently not under my sign in, it may raise a few alarm bells, as in "What the hell is he doing"

So the current situation is a messy file of 1500+ photos that are all taken by me yet not under my auspices. If they were all neat and tidy I would not mind but this is my wiki commons legacy and I would like to be proud of it. So laying my request at the mercy of the court, I would love to hear from you.

All comments, assistance would be appreciated. Regards Peter Broster (aka Peter Glyn and custom author name Antares) Peter Glyn (talk) 17:23, 6 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Only a few users will see this, since only a few are watching you personally. Someone has probably watchlisted at least some of the pictures, and will notice that something is happening. I suggest, don't move too quickly. Change a few per day, a dozen or two per week, where you can. When someone gets alarmed, they will probably wonder who you are and look here. With any luck, they will see this section and use it as a starting point for their complaint or congratulations or whatever. And if you can get back your Flickr account, use it to say many of your pictures are now in Wikimedia Commons. Jim.henderson (talk) 02:59, 8 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thanks again Jim. You have clearly laid out the situation for me. I will tread carefully. Peter Peter Glyn (talk) 07:24, 8 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

To anyone reading, I have updated my pages to provide links between my user name, author name, wiki commons photos and wiki-flickr photos.

I plan on a slow upgrade of the flickr photos and hopefully the links will explain.

Any problems, please post here. Peter Glyn (talk) 15:56, 8 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

When you've done some thirty or fifty, or one fifth to one quarter if that happens sooner, with no objections over the course of two or three weeks, then you have given plentiful notice. You might as well proceed with the rest of the job at a comfortable pace. Umm, I was going to say a couple other things but seem to have forgotten during my busy yesterday.
Oh, if one of your pictures is present and you think you prefer a different angle or something, better to upload a new file (surnamed "back" or "eastern side" or "closeup" or "2020" or whatever) than to upload over the existing file. Future editors might decide you chose wrong, or should have brought the other one to the darkroom to make it better than the one you chose ever could be. Leave things in a way to help future editors to do whatever they want, even if they are more ignorant or sophisticated than us.
Now I remember. License. Ah, that is, licence. Anyway for my first thousand pictures or two I stamped "CC0" which is practically the same as "Public Domain" but eventually I came to the view that future ones should take the default CC-BY which requires credit. Some of my friends say no, I should make it CC-SA to force reusers to release their derivative works for free. For me, that seems going too far. It's not a huge matter, as most pictures on the Web are reused without giving a rap about even the most blatant stealing, but the ethical ones are a good source of publicity for Commons. And for me, as it put me into two news stories a couple years ago including one on local television. Just do a Web search for "Jim Henderson Manhattan Wikipedian photographer".
Final note, there's a Web meetup Saturday for photographers, mostly much more sophisticated then you or me but still they have useful hints. Commons:Commons Photographers User Group/Virtual Meeting on December 12, 2020 Jim.henderson (talk) 19:33, 9 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

I finally got the Tavern photo to work. The photos were reverted and I posted a clean image. (Someone must have read my cry for help) Finally, the location is tagged with a photo.

I don't like my real name "Peter Broster" on all my photos. Just a personal thing. I prefer to have an author name that people can click and follow links to my real name if they really want to.

I will take your advice on the photo changes. It will be a 2021 project for the bulk of them as long as no complaints of what I do to year end.

With regards to CCO, I am not terribly fussed about copyright. I will change my default to CC-BY but as you say, its largely ignored anyway. I am surprised how many of my photos have been used elsewhere on wiki in general.

Cheers for now. Peter Glyn (talk) 22:16, 9 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Photos inherited from deceased relatives edit

I own a fairly large collection of photographs by my great aunt and also some by my father. They may have some value on wiki commons but they were not taken by me.

Question 1 : How do attribute to my aunt first as the "author" without creating a new user.

Question 2 : What do I use for the Source ? I cannot use "own"

Thanks Peter Peter Glyn (talk) 16:51, 22 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Peter Glyn (talk) 16:52, 22 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

If I understand correctly, this is a question generally handled in COM:VP/C. Mostly I think it's relatively easy if you are the heir; otherwise it becomes a three-body problem; you, the creator, and the heir. Unless it's so old that it's in Public Domain. I think. Thanks for uploading File:Peniarth Arms Hotel, Bryncrug.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Thanks for uploading File:Dog Yard Range.jpg.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.
