Hello - the Flickr page from which this was taken says this is from http://www.vishvagujarat.com/film-on-sp-chief-mulayam-singh-yadav/. That flickr account is full of copied Internet pictures. I see that you have edited Wikipedia a lot - do you know something about this image that makes you think it has a valid copyright release? Blue Rasberry (talk) 11:14, 24 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hi, well this is embarrassing, no, I don't. This will teach me not to trust Flickr blindly. Other than this obvious one, could you tell me other ways of making sure a Flickr pic isn't a copyright? This one was uploaded a few weeks ago so I assumed... -Ugog Nizdast (talk) 11:35, 24 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Ugog Nizdast You live and learn - no need to be embarrassed. Here are some things I check-
  • Is the picture high quality? If it is, it is more likely to be an original upload. In this case, the picture was low resolution. People who donate pictures to the public domain are more likely to make a good donation of a high-quality picture than to give a low-resolution crop.
  • If the picture is high-quality or of a famous person, then does the person's flickr account suggest that they are a photographer or have access to famous people? In this case, the account has few followers, not many pictures, no profile about the uploader, and is a mix of high and low quality pictures. The high quality pictures could only come from a good photographer, but the low quality ones would never be shown by any professional. There is trouble here.
  • In this case, I checked because I had wanted a picture of Mulayam Singh Yadav for a long time, but he (like many Indian politicians) restricts photographer access. I only checked because I wondered how anyone got close to him for a free picture.
Good luck and thanks for trying. I would love a picture of this guy. I would like a nicer one of Mayawati too. Blue Rasberry (talk) 12:43, 24 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Really thanks for your time. So far I've uploaded a few of not-so-high profile people successfully and it did feel weird that someone uploaded a picture in PD for someone big as Yadav. I'll keep these points in mind. Good day, Ugog Nizdast (talk) 12:49, 24 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
