Uploads by blocked user

How can user, that is blocked in 2018, upload files on Commons. See here. --Smooth O (talk) 08:10, 20 May 2022 (UTC)

They were all imported from elsewhere using FileImporter. Whoops! Who do we need to report this to? El Grafo (talk) 08:25, 20 May 2022 (UTC)
I've started by filing phab:T308820. --El Grafo (talk) 08:35, 20 May 2022 (UTC)
Also posted a message at AN so admins are aware. El Grafo (talk) 08:47, 20 May 2022 (UTC)
Turns out the files were imported by another user. As FileImporter imports the complete history, it appears like the blocked user was making edits on Commons. That's not actually the case though. I'm going to mark this as resolved here, discussion over at discussion over at COM:AN is still open for the moment. Nevertheless: Thanks for reporting, Smooth O. --El Grafo (talk) 10:11, 20 May 2022 (UTC)

Main page shows me stuff from 2 days ago

I visited the main page in firefox incognito mode just now (UTC0640, 6 May). it showed me 4 May's potd motd. :/

i purged it just now (utc 0643) and then refreshed again. it finally shows today's stuff.

this doesnt seem ideal. maybe we should add a purge button on main page? RZuo (talk) 06:45, 6 May 2022 (UTC)

A purge button would look really unprofessional IMO (we’d need to stress on the main page what we offer, not what we’re unable to). Maybe a bot that purges the page right after each midnight is a better solution. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 00:15, 7 May 2022 (UTC)

Commons Photo challenge in February 2022 - Pipe organs.

My question concerns the last Commons Photo challenge in February 2022 - Pipe organs. Is there any reason that my image file [File:Pipe organ in Chalmers-Wesley United Church of Quebec City.jpg] and the file [File:Orgue Église Presbytérienne Saint-Andrew's, Québec.jpg], which I have up-loaded, were not at all considered in the score list. You can check it out on the final list [10] -- Marc-Lautenbacher (talk) 04:18, 6 May 2022 (UTC)

@Marc-Lautenbacher: i think that happened because your works received no votes in Commons:Photo challenge/2022 - February - Pipe organs/Voting. you see there're 99 submissions but only 22 on result list. RZuo (talk) 06:52, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
Thank you very much for your explication. I did not know those facts concerning the choice by votes of the submissions to the contest.-- Marc-Lautenbacher (talk) 15:41, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

Do I need to connect my images in Wikidata, Commons and Wikipedia? Or is it automated?

Hello! I see that there is some automated activity if I upload a image to commons and add a wikidata qualifier. So for example, I uploaded this image. I added the wikidata qualifier Q108864466. Will the image now appear automatically after some days on the wikidata page and on the connected wikipedia page? Or should I insert the image URL in Wikidata and Wikipedia manually? And is this somehow affected by marking the wikidata connection "prominent" or not? How long will this process take? Thanks for your answers! --Lothur (talk) 12:23, 9 May 2022 (UTC)

@Lothur No, it will not automatically appear at Lindach (Q108864466). That's because at Wikidata they only want to show one or two carefully selected images for each item. If you add your image to Lindach (Q108864466) at Wikidata manually, it will become the image of this item, at least as far as Wikidata is concerned. In this case, it makes sense to even be a bit more specific and declare it as an aerial view (P8592) rather than the default image (P18) - which I have now done for you with this edit over on Wikidata.
Now that that's done, Wikipedias and other projects may or may not start showing the image in certain places such as infoboxes. For example, that's how File:Schwabhausen Rathaus 0457.jpg made its way into the top right corner of Category:Schwabhausen (and many other places such as ro:Schwabhausen_(Bayern), ru:Швабхаузен_(Бавария), sr:Швабхаузен_(Горња_Баварска)): it was manually defined as the image of Schwabenhausen (image (P18)) at Schwabhausen (Q512162). HOWEVER: as far as I know, the German language Wikipedia does not play this game. If you want your image to appear at de:Lindach (Schwabhausen), you'll have to put it there yourself.
Hope that clarifies things at least a bit, feel free to ping me for further questions. El Grafo (talk) 14:17, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
PS: Addding Q108864466 as a "depicts" to your image was still a good idea, though from a Commons point of view. And just in case you are (like me) currently unable to see that depicts statement at in the Structured Data tab at File:Lindach Luftbild.jpg: it's still there, but there seems to be some kind of bug going on right now that hides Structured Data content. --El Grafo (talk) 14:24, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
Thanks a lot for this detailed answer! Also I didn't know the Luftbild declaration yet. So also the images in the lists of e.g. cultural heritage monuments are manually added and while possible I can't rely on bots doing that work. Lothur (talk) 14:32, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
@Lothur Ja, soweit ich weiss werden die Denkmallisten in de.wikipedia nach wie vor von Hand bebildert. El Grafo (talk) 12:48, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

Lua gives red errors in Template:Complex date

Hello, I would request help with the mentioned template and the module of the same name. You could see on the doc subpage that some template usage examples don’t work and shows big red text about Lua errors. And it appears on different file pages in different places, I assume. That would be great if someone could fix it. (I, myself, don’t have enough experience to solve it until the end of eternity and, otherwise, I don’t have permissions to edit Modules.) With all the best wishes, Pacha Tchernof (talk) 16:27, 18 May 2022 (UTC)

@Pacha Tchernof: I can't see any errors on the template documentation page. Where do you see them? NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 18:44, 18 May 2022 (UTC)
There might be a long story, but I won't waste your time. It's in some way related to cookies, so I don't see bunches of red error notices now, too. Thank you for your attention and please have a wonderful week! Pacha Tchernof (talk) 18:58, 18 May 2022 (UTC)
Oops, I forgot the mention. Here it is NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh. Best regards, Pacha Tchernof (talk) 18:59, 18 May 2022 (UTC)

How does one extract a name or Wikidata code from a Creator template?

Trying to figure out a better credit line generator, but I'm not quite seeing how Creator templates are reduced to a name string. Is there some module that already exists to do this, ideally with wikidata-based name translation? Adam Cuerden (talk) 23:10, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

Weird file

Hello!

I found File:Freundeskreis Kunsthaus Göttingen.tif which behaves quite weirdly. 424px, 1448px and 2976px all look different to me, the 1448px looks like the JPG thumbnail generated on the file page and the TIF thumbnail. The 424px looks like the thumbnail in the file history section. I tried resave using CropTool (I cropped but didn't crop away anything) at File:Freundeskreis Kunsthaus Göttingen (test version).tif but it didn't help. TIF thumbnail, 424px and 1448px all look different to me. The above was a lossless crop but I also resaved the file with lossy crop option at File:Freundeskreis Kunsthaus Göttingen (test version 2).tif but they were identical, which might just be on CropTool's part. I see however that MediaWiki gives the original version a JPG thumbnail however the resaved versions PNG thumbnails, I don't know why.

Since it is a TIFF file I suspect the reason for this weird stuff going on might be phab:T272364, but I'm not sure. Is there CMYK color coding in the file?Jonteemil (talk) 15:28, 17 May 2022 (UTC)

Not all browsers will be able to display original's TIF thumbnail and resaved version's TIF thumbnail, only some browsers can.Jonteemil (talk) 15:56, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
@Jonteemil: I downloaded File:Freundeskreis Kunsthaus Göttingen.tif and did nothing more than import it to GIMP and export it again; then I uploaded the resulting file to File:Freundeskreis Kunsthaus Göttingen (test version 3).tif, where it seems the thumbnail issue has disappeared (although it is now a little blurry, as phab:T272364 mentions). For whatever mysterious reason, the filesize has been reduced by more than half, despite both files (allegedly) using LZW compression. It might be that the color profile was indeed causing problems, and importing it to GIMP fixed that by converting it to GIMP's built-in sRGB profile. I have no idea what's going on with the rest of this, but it at least appears to display properly now. Shells-shells (talk) 06:45, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
@Shells-shells: Okay, thanks. Can you see the color profile of the original file?Jonteemil (talk) 17:28, 23 May 2022 (UTC)

PetScan issue or categorization problem

I had a problem with using PetScan. When adding Category:Images from Wiki Loves Earth 2022 in Germany as category and Category:Protected areas of Germany as negative category I only got an error message. When only searching for Category:Images from Wiki Loves Earth 2022 in Germany the result was as expected. Then I searched for Category:Protected areas of Germany as expected this took a lot of time(depth 15) but the result of more then fife million is still more then expected. In the result there are many files definitely should not be there like File:Kyotostation3.jpg, File:Kane QC.png or File:Don Lorenzo Monaco 001.jpg. This could be a bug of PetScan or something is miss categorized under Category:Protected areas of Germany. Are there any suggestions how to check if this is caused by miss categorization. --GPSLeo (talk) 16:14, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

@GPSLeo: I wasn't able to find the exact path, but Category:CfD 2020-01 looks like a possible culprit. This category is a parent cat for several German categories, but also a parent for all files in Category:License migration redundant and a lot more (via Category:Commons maintenance which is in this CFD cat). MKFI (talk) 07:41, 23 May 2022 (UTC)
Yes there are many categories under Category:Protected areas of Germany also under Category:Prospective categories but this should not affect the search for Category:Protected areas of Germany. --GPSLeo (talk) 11:38, 23 May 2022 (UTC)

Category:Nintendo video games

There is something wrong with the Category:Nintendo video games page. The Wikipedia links are right there now, but when you put Wikidata infobox template in there, the Wikipedia links link to Video game articles. What is wrong there and how to fix it? Luurankosoturi (talk) 18:49, 24 May 2022 (UTC)

@Luurankosoturi: There was an incorrect statement in the category’s Wikidata item, which was picked up by the infobox. I removed it, now the infobox should display correctly. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 19:59, 24 May 2022 (UTC)

VisualFileChange regex

I'd like to perform a batch task with VFC to remove a template string with various entries, but I can't seem to find the proper JavaScript regular expression for the replacement job. Specifically, in Category:Brasilia Vôlei vs. EC Pinheiros, Super League (4 December 2018) I would like to remove the bot entries of FlickreviewR, so I'm looking for a way to replace a string like {{FlickreviewR ... FlickreviewR 2}}. Does anyone have an idea how to implement the "anything" search between the instances of "FlickreviewR"? De728631 (talk) 17:32, 24 May 2022 (UTC)

@De728631: VFC is not really good for tasks that need supervising. Try JWB or AWB instead. Regardless, here's your regex:
/^\s*\{\{FlickreviewR(?:\|\s*[\w-]+?=.*)+\|\s*reviewer\s*=\s*FlickreviewR 2\s*\}\}\s*$/gm
This can be much simpler, however, with the risk of catching something else:
/\{\{FlickreviewR.+?FlickreviewR 2\s*\}\}/gm
NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 20:37, 24 May 2022 (UTC)
@NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh: Thanks a lot, I will try those expressions. De728631 (talk) 17:47, 26 May 2022 (UTC)

MediaWiki edit request

Hello everyone, this is just an edit request. Please go to MediaWiki:Gadget-Cat-a-lot.js/ckb and:

  • find //<syntaxhighlight lang="javascript"> (1 match) and replace with //<nowiki>

Duplicate images

It was brought to my attention that there are duplicate images on Commons because I uploaded the collections of an archive in the Netherlands (see image) ), but these had already been uploaded via Flickr. Unfortunately, I do not know why exactly, the tool I used for uploading did not detect this. I would really like to fix it. What would be the best way to go about this? Is there a tool I could use? Should the descriptions be merged? Should the links to Flickr be preserved? Should I mark the pictures as duplicate or superseded? Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction.

MichellevL (WMNL) (talk) 13:46, 30 May 2022 (UTC)

There are a lot of these affecting the Anefo archive too. It's not a big problem (duplicates cause very little harm) so I've been fixing the odd one or two as I enounter them, usually finding that the original archive one is the best quality and the derived ones are poorer, even if they were uploaded to Commons first. See File:ABBA (14162834262).png for an example.
The only time there's a problem is when someone then starts edit-warring to keep "their" upload. Andy Dingley (talk) 14:13, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
Hi @Andy Dingley, thanks! Do I understand it correctly that I can suffice with fixing the images when I come upon them manually and that I can delete the derived duplicate ones from Flickr? MichellevL (WMNL) (talk) 07:58, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
You have several options as to process, but (in general here) 1. Discussion is better than haste (nothing is ever really that urgent) and 2. Tumbleweeds. So try to let the two or three people interested in that subject area know first, but don't open a long discussion and expect anything to happen for a month or two. Favour the {{Duplicate}} tag for (potential) immediate deletion over the {{Delete}} tag and a discussion, but only if it's really clear cut. It would be useful if the lifetime of {{Delete}} was clearer (not deleting until 7 days after application would solve some issues, but we know admins don't respect that). It would also be useful to have a reciprocal tag for "This is a duplicate and we intend to keep this one, but you may wish to take a look).
To sort out a duplicate like this, you have several aspects to look at and some of them might need merger rather than replacement. So:
  • Canonical source
  • Image file
  • Author and source credits
  • Licensing
  • Metadata description
We also have separate entities here for filename (hard to remove, although we can redirect it), image file and description text (easy to change).
First thing is to choose the one to keep. I would usually choose the one furthest back in the 'food chain'. So as you've chosen here, go for the canonical government or large project archive, over the individual copy through Flickr. That will usually (as here) then make the rest fall into place, because the cleanest upload from the best source is the one to keep. But this isn't always true! There may well be supplemental description added to some later copies, and it can be worth copying that across (although sometimes the licensing of that can get tricky, I've seen very valuable diagram annotations deleted, "just to make a point").
Retouched images are tricky. We might want to keep the retouched one, because it's better. This has to be judged case-by-case. Sometimes you can overwrite a "canonical" image (maybe the brightness was just turned up, or it was rotated) because the change is trivial. Maybe the retouch was a real change, such as cropping to an extracted subject (almost always these need to become two images, with source links between). Ones inbetween get tricky: should the borders of glass negatives be cropped off? They might require this for re-use, but should it (usually yes) then be a separate image? Does extensive manual retouching require a separate upload? (Converting muddy grey book scans to sharp black & white is a classic) Does it require a separate upload because there's a licensing credit needed for that retouching work?
Licensing here should choose the most free licence that is possible. This will typically be that from a big archive. If a Flickr uploader restricts that, we don't have to follow that licence if a freer version was available to us. We might not even have to follow it (we refute it as copyfraud) if they try to restrict it and we keep using that image file – but this is likely to lead to problems and deletions in the future. We certainly can't use Flickrwashed images, if a Flickr uploader makes a licence freer without good cause and being in a position to do so.
It's all a mess and there aren't enough active and competent people, especially admins, on Commons to make this a smooth or timely process. But try to talk to sensible people, when you find them, and that's usually enough to get by, albeit slowly. Andy Dingley (talk) 10:00, 31 May 2022 (UTC)

Template:minx

Hello. I see a problem with the template {{Minx}}. The labels for months are not rendering properly. As can be seen for example at Category:November 2021 in Wan Chai, the labels for the months in the table are rendering as: Jan, Mar, Mar, May, May, Jul, Jul, Aug, Oct, Oct, Dec, Dec, and not in the usual order of Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May, Jun, July, Aug, Sep, Oct, Nov, Dec. Is anyone able to figure out the issue here? Thanks, --Malcolmxl5 (talk) 23:46, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
