Picture of the Year voting round 1 open edit

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open! edit

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Thanks,

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

Category names edit

Why are you complicating category names when not necessary? For instance, you added "(Abitibi-Témiscamingue)" to the unique category name of Category:Lac Kipawa, and "(Nord-du-Québec)" to the unique category name of Category:Lac Mistassini. This is an unnecessary disambiguation. --P 1 9 9   14:08, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Hello P199 I'm adding a precision for categories when more than one lake of that name exist in the province. For example, There are 14 different "Lac Deschênes" in Quebec. I'm using the "Commission de Toponymie du Québec" website to do this (http://www.toponymie.gouv.qc.ca/ct/). --Cephas (talk) 14:19, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

  • Yes, I thought so. But that is still unnecessary if there are no photos of these other lakes. Disambiguation should only be added if it is needed. If photos are uploaded of the other lakes, then it should be disambiguated. But, it is very unlikely we will ever get photos of all the other lakes. For instance, the other 2 Mistassini Lakes are both small obscure lakes in remote wilderness. And even if we did, the largest natural lake would be primary topic. (BTW, no need to answer on my talk page, I'll watch this conversation, or just use {{Ping}}). Regards, --P 1 9 9   14:55, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Map Request edit

I noticed that you created the map for the article on English Wikipedia. Is it possible for you to create a 2nd map that shows it ZOOMED in on the state of Kansas. The current map is a great high level over view, but a 2nd ZOOM map would be helpful. Thanks in advance. • SbmeirowTalk • 01:29, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

Category:Rhodopis edit

Rhodopis has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Generosity Crowdfunding Campaign for User:The Photographer edit

Please excuse me spamming you, which concerns Generosity Crowdfunding Campaign. My contributions cover the architecture and culture of Brazil and Venezuela. I has basic photographic equipment: an old D300 camera and 35mm lens, and it is very expensive for me to acquire this equipment. I has recently taken several images using the technique where multiple frames are stitched together to create a high-resolution panorama. However, many times frustrated with the stitching errors that result from trying to take such photos without a proper panoramic head for his tripod. This special equipment permits the camera to be rotated around the entrance pupil of the lens, and eliminates such errors. Having a panoramic head would greatly increase the potential for The Photographer to create sharp high-resolution images for Commons. In addition, the purchase of a camera with a fisheye lens would enable 180 × 360° panoramas to be taken, which are a great way to explore a scene as though one is really there.

Please see the discussion about the Crowd-funding campaign on User talk:The Photographer#Generosity Crowdfunding Campaign and visit the Generosity Crowd-funding Campaign page to consider donating. Even a modest donation will make a difference if many people contribute. Thanks. --The Photographer 13:55, 23 November 2016 (UTC)

Update request edit

Hello.

If you have the time, can you update these maps you uploaded, over an extended period, because South Sudan is missing in these maps (and include South Sudan and also Montenegro in future uploads)?

I am adding South Sudan (as well as Montenegro and other possible missing updates) in the PNG maps in Category:Maps needing South Sudan political boundaries and then remove this category after updating them. There were close to 1100 maps since I started to update these files on 1 March 2018, now it is reduced to less than 670 maps, but there is a long way to go.

Unfortunately I don't know how to edit SVG maps myself, that is why I asked you.

Here is the list the maps you uploaded where South Sudan is missing:
