You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

It's okay. I know that there is another image on Commons named Charlotte Friend. When I created the file I didn't know this, and the other image interferred with the one I created when I tried to load it into my article. Perhaps this could be the cause? Hi CusterDome. I saw that you uploaded File:Charlotte Friend.jpg and File:Charlotte Friend Stewart 2.png. The description on the second image says 'Bennett 1986, p. 40', which I think refers to Joseph L. Bennett's 1986 book Boilermaker Music Makers. But you claimed that it was your own work and tagged it as being in the public domain. The first image is the same photo, yet is tagged as {{PD-US-not renewed}}. Do you have any evidence that the image was published between 1929 and 1963 and the copyright was not renewed? The images are from Bennet's 1987 book. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't have published them. I have secured permission from author Bennet and the current head of the Purdue Musical Organizations William Griffel to use material from the Bennett book. I have been working to resolve this situation, and Griffel has submitted a request to the permissions at enwikimedia email app. At this point I am awaiting a response. Thanks. I'm seeing similar problems with most of the images that you have uploaded. Even if you get permission from Bennett and Griffel, they did not take all these photos so they couldn't release the copyright. Other images, like File:Fungi From Yuggoth, Lovecraft Ballantine Books Cover, 1971.jpg are just book covers that are not in the public domain and definitely should not be labeled as your "own work". You also labeled File:Installation of the Ouabache Sculpture.jpg as your own work. Did you take this photo back in 1976? We tend to be strict about copyright here because it can have legal consequences for the project. I would suggest that you remove any images that are not your own work. The Fungi From Yuggoth is the cover of a vintage paperback that I own. The particular edition is out of print, and Lovecraft's writings are public domain, so I reasoned it was okay to use. If it is in violation than I agree that it should be removed. I am new to Wikipedia and have made some mistakes.

The Ouabache sculpure image is a family photo in my possession. It has never been published on the internet until I scanned it and uploaded it to Wikimedia Commons. It was likely taken by may aunt Rebecca McNeely who is the widow of the artist who built the sculpture, Richard McNeely. Rebecca gave me the photo to use for the Wikipedia page. I was ten years old in 1976 the year of the sculpture's dedication. It is entirely possible that I took the photo although I don't remember. My father helped my uncle Richard McNeely to built the Ouabache sculpture, so I was around at the time of the sculpture's construction. CusterDome (talk) 23:33, 5 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Reasonable questions. Wikimedia Commons is only for freely licensed images, either in the public domain or released under a free license. The book cover for Fungi from Yuggoth that was originally posted on the article is hosted on the English Wikipedia (not here) and has a non-free use rationale. While Lovecraft's writings may be in the public domain, the artwork for the covers probably are not. We generally try to use first edition covers, but in this case I think your cover could be uploaded at the English Wikipedia with a non-free use rationale and used to replace the other image. As to the Oaubache sculpture image, if it was your aunt that took the photo, then the copyright would belong to her. If it was you that took it, you're probably fine. One thing to watch out for with photos of public art is freedom of panorama. In the U.S., if the sculpture was installed before 1978, photos are allowed so long as there was no copyright notice. Other than the "This Week" image, these images are scans of family photos literally taken from old family albums by my aunt who sent them to me in the mail to use for the Ouabache article.
