First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Series expansion for Ln edit

Hi Darapti, thank you for checking and correcting the categories on two of my illustrations. I do not quite understand this edit though, where you categorize a series expansion for Ln as a Taylor series, but the series expansion does not have the Taylor form. Could you please explain to me, why you think this is a Tayler series? Cheers, -- Slaunger 18:36, 26 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Classification edit

Hello,

I have noticed some of your edits which let me think you don't know the principles of classification in Wikimedia Commons:

  • Image:Complex numbers addition.png:
    1. Your argumentation is irrelevant: we don't classify media files in Commons according to their uses, but according to their intrinsic features. However, the files are put together (categories) in order to easy their use in encyclopaedic articles.
      • Thanks for your remarks, I think I know what you mean, but you could not convince me. The principle which you mention is good, in principle. According to it, first of all, the image represents a tetragon, with

coloured lines, and where the corners are marked with some letters. There is nothing (no intrinsic feature) which indicates that we are dealing with complex numbers, therefore also not with complex analysis.

      • A mathematical object is always more than its underlying set. That there exists a complex addition and complex multiplication constitutes the complex numbers (also historically). Are you really saying the only entries under complex numbers should be a+bi, with certain specified real a and b? (would i, which is intrinsically a letter, be allowed anyway?). (another example, in the category tetragon there are only 4 out of 25 diagrams which show nothing

but a tetragon, all others indicate some further features).

The category is not for operations, which are one or two-variables functions, that is matter of complex analysis. As you probably know “complex analysis” is not “complicated analysis”, but mathematical analysis regarding to complex numbers.

      • I think an image should be in category C if it could be used to explain/illustrate a concept which is related to category C. The image could be used (and is used) to explain what complex numbers are (and could be used to explain what a tetragon, but not a rectangle is), but not for a concept of complex analysis. Complex analysis deals with analytic properties (differentiability, convergence, etc.) of functions from C to C, not with addition. Maybe the right category is something like alg. structures on complex numbers or complex numbers as a field. But as I said, the concept of complex numbers does only make sense (exist) if certain properties are known, and the basic algebraic operations are part of this. So I think the category complex numbers is by far more suitable than complex analysis (which, as a big category,

should not contain images at all; look at the mess, there is no structure at all).

      • No, I want to collect images which can help to explain (could be used for an encyclopedic article or whatever)

what a pole of a (real or complex) function is. (if a function has a pole, then an image of this function, which does not show the pole, does not belong to this category).

    1. I think it is a bad idea, because if you are able to write articles in mathematics, you know what functions have a pole. Wikimedia Commons is a tool to find media files, not to teach something.
      • That is true. But if I want to write an article about poles, I might look for a nice picture for it, and then it is good

to have a category.

    1. This category has not an explicit name. Find a better one and/or add links or an explanation text.
      • I do not understand this. Poles is not possible, because of the people, the bracket term is used to indicate that the category deals with poles of functions. Poles (calculus) would also be possible.

--Juiced lemon 19:55, 26 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

      • The files should show what a pole is (maybe they show other things as well).

bye, Holger

Geometry edit

Hi, I saw you rollbacked my edit on page Geometry; i think it is a good idea to create it: by creating the redirect, when an user search "geometry" is redirected to the correct page Category:Geometry instead of getting a blank page :-P ... have a look at the page Cleopatra and see how is used the redirect.... :-) hi! --Ramac 13:21, 31 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Ramac,

I understand your point. The redirect had first produced a page entry on the geometry-category, which redirects then to the category - which is silly. No it works as it should.

OK, thank :-) --Ramac 21:43, 1 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

animated gif's on wikimedia edit

Hello, I am a mathematics teacher in California, and am fascinated by your animated gif's. Could you tell me how they were created, and if it is a difficult process. Thank you, Bill Lombard

Hello,
Thanks for this message.
I use en:Adobe Flash (Macromedia Flash MX). It's a quite big and difficult program : it can be used to make animations, games, web pages ...
It's a expensive program too.
Flash 5 is enough to create gif like I've done. A trial version exists.
Here is a tutorial. For the gifs I've created, I've used a combinaison of masks and interpolations
I haven't got a good english so I can't really explain better. I hope I've answered to your question.

Edit summaries edit

I wanted to let you know that I appreciate your recent edits to math images, but it would be nice if you'd include an edit summary with each edit, so I can tell what sort of change you made without needing to check it specifically. Thanks! --Sopoforic 05:49, 12 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Dear Sopoforic

If I would make any significant change, I will make an edit summary. At the moment I just tidy up some messy categories (and it is a mess) and move things to subsubsubcategories. An edit summary in each case would double or trible the effort, I am afraid. Darapti

If you plan on doing a lot of categorizing, you should take a look at MediaWiki talk:HotCat.js. It can make things much quicker, and it automatically makes the summaries. --Sopoforic 21:00, 12 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
And, incidentally, even just a summary like 'cat' would be preferable to none, if you could work it in. --Sopoforic 21:01, 12 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Category:Fractals edit

Thanks a lot for cleaning up Category:Fractals ^^
I started cleaning up some time before, but I didn't know in which subcategory I should move pictures like Fk-055.JPG.

Das weiss ich auch nicht, eine Zuteilung nach inhaltlichen Kriterien ist schwierig, deshalb hab ich's nach Benutzer sortiert.

Relating to your edit: I've created a template for catetegories as Category:Fractals is - see Template:Categorise
I don't know how many languages you can speak or write, but it would be nice if you could add some. It's no problem if you can't
hv --D-Kuru 14:52, 17 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Mathematical subcategories edit

(Copied from my talk, said Rursus 09:46, 3 December 2007 (UTC))Reply

could you please in future put mathematical pictures into suitable subcategories, Darapti

Nope! I made a crude classification of about 200 images or so! Then I made a reclassification of 200 japanese images, and a sorting of about 50 old constellation images into a couple of new subcategories, and then the time was 22.30 and I was pretty sleepy and had no more energy to classify. You do that, because I'm better at classifying images in general categories, and not so good at classifying in specialized categories, so you are better at that and if we collaborate with our respective energies and gifts, the world will soon become wonderful! Rursus 09:45, 3 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

you've convinced me. I am looking forward to our wonderful fututre. Darapti
