--A.Savin 16:58, 12 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

--Helgi-S (talk) 17:41, 12 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Paris edit

Please don't move all images from Category:Paris to France photographs taken on ... ! If you want, you can copy. Thanks!--Paris 16 (talk) 23:45, 17 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

2 Paris 16: Please, see COM:OVERCAT. All this files already was in Category:January 2017 in Paris (subcategory of Category:Paris). Hence, Category:Paris is excessive and unnecessary for this files. -- Helgi-S (talk) 17:27, 18 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

They need a other category like Category:Restaurants in Paris, Category:Hotels in Paris... not only Category:January 2017 in Paris. So you can move them to Category:Media of Paris needing categories.--Paris 16 (talk) 00:27, 19 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Of course, I agree. Other category, not Category:Paris. I can move. And you can move too. Just do it   --Helgi-S (talk) 14:33, 19 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

United States photographs category edit

English: Out of curiosity, why are you creating country day categories like Category:United States photographs taken on 2017-01-17? It seems like it is too specific of a categories. Also, most of those images are in a category that will eventually also get to the country specific locations. By the look of your talk page, it looks like I am not the wonder this. I feel like this is something that should have been brought up on one of the large discussion pages (Commons:Village pump/Proposals) before you began doing this, so everyone could have input.Elisfkc (talk) 20:42, 18 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Transated с Google Translate Elisfkc (talk) 20:42, 18 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
2 Elisfkc. Sometimes, e.g. when image have no cats, or only "day photos" cat (e.g. from EXIF), or "verysmallville" cat, etc., this "country day photos" cat is simple but very useful. Image will get whole set of country/time parental cats with smart navigation. Note: all of them, including "country day photos" cat, is standard and created by templates (like {{USA photographs taken on navbox}}). Nothing is mine. --Helgi-S (talk) 14:27, 19 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
That template was created in July 2016. You seem to be the only one to use it and just because a template exists does not mean it has to or should be used. It seems like it would be more useful to have placed those images in existing categories rather than making your own specific subcategories. Elisfkc (talk) 15:47, 19 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
2 Elisfkc. There are 125 "United States photographs taken on ..." categories. I created 43 of them. There are 388 "Germany photographs taken on ..." categories. I created 34. What about other countries? Enough? My "own specific subcategories"? There are no such. --Helgi-S (talk) 17:00, 19 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
From what I see, most of those categories are on days when there are over 200 pictures. You are doing it for every day, even when there are less than 100. That's my problem with what you are doing. Elisfkc (talk) 17:06, 19 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
2 Elisfkc. The only problem is too few files in the categories? This is fixable  . A lot of uploaded images with EXIF dates have no "day photos" category. --Helgi-S (talk) 17:32, 19 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
EXIF days are not always right. I still think this is something that needs to be discussed project wide. Elisfkc (talk) 17:34, 19 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

I agree, this is something that needs further discussion. Please stop adding these categories until there is consensus to do so. Currently, the widely used {{Taken on}} template automatically categorizes into Category:Photographs taken on XXXX-XX-XX. Adding Category:Photographs taken on XXXX-XX-XX in YYYYYYYY thus places those photos in both the main category and its subcategory, which should generally be avoided. Additionally, the daily categories are intended to be a sort of 'snapshot of the world' as it existed on a given day. Adding country categories obfuscates that without adding any useful detail. 2 Pi.1415926535. Adding Category:Photographs taken on XXXX-XX-XX in YYYYYYYY, I added 'cat=no' in {{Taken on}} or removed this template. It is not a problem. Alas, 'snapshot of the world' sometimes looks like trash bin. It was the original cause of my edits. --Helgi-S (talk) 04:06, 21 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
But what you see as "trash bin", many others, including myself, see as a great example of the snapshot of the world, because they are images from all over. The more constructive thing for you to do would be to work on categories that have been marked as requiring diffusion, rather than working on Photographs taken on ___-__-__ categories. Elisfkc (talk) 18:47, 21 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Elisfkc and Pi.1415926535: You already have 'snapshot of the world' (with subcategories or not). A lot of remarkable categories have subcategories. As experienced editor, you may use tools like CatScan for obtaining lists or galleries of all images, if you need. But some editors (including myself) interested in 'snapshot of the country'. It is not prohibited. And thank you for the tip about categories requiring diffusion. --Helgi-S (talk) 15:14, 22 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
You have two extremely experienced editors, one an administrator, telling you to stop doing this. That means that you need to stop, and get consensus from other editors before you continue. Consider this your official warning. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 16:43, 22 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Pi.1415926535: I stopped. No such category was created. --Helgi-S (talk) 18:22, 22 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Since you did not make a proposal, I have made one on Commons:Village pump/Proposals to empty these categories. Elisfkc (talk) 17:55, 14 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

COM:Village pump/Proposals/Archive/2017/02#Closing: 12   Support, 12   Oppose) for the proposal. --Helgi-S (talk) 19:24, 29 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Moving photographs edit

Hello! Thanks for moving my photographs of Dülmen. Just for your information: My bot will move all these photographs within the next days/weeks. May be it's easier for you. Hopefully all missing categories like 2017 in North Rhine-Westphalia by month or January 2017 in Germany by state will be created by a bot within the next days too. --XRay talk 17:51, 19 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

OK. Quality images, indeed. I click links like this for comfort seeing. --Helgi-S (talk) 18:29, 19 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
