Hello, Houston50!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

File:RALPH SAMPSON HOF 2012.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Hi Houston 50, for problems with/questions about image uploads you should use this place, your talkpage.
As you were already advised, but eventually didn't realize, that you should not upload your images/uploads over existing images from other users, as you have actually done with File:Ralph Sampson 2010.jpg. If you get a warning message about that during upload, you should choose a different filename.
Did you really shoot both File:Ralph Sampson Standing.jpg and File:Ralph Sampson 2012 VA.jpg by yourself? I was only wondering because both files are missing the EXIF data, which are automatically produced by most digital cameras (incl. phones). If the images were not really shot by you, then you need to provide a permission from the photographer.
If you don't have better images available, then you might search at flickr.com for better shots. But, be aware that only freely licensed images are allowed on Commons. Flickr hosts also image under CC licensed that do not allowed modification or derivcatives (ND) or forbid commercial use (NC). These are not allowed on Commons.
I have now created a new category for Ralph Sampson images, see Category:Ralph Sampson. --Túrelio (talk) 14:20, 27 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Turelio, Thanks for your response and clarification. I didn't take the two photos that you mentioned, however I do own them and will get the proper information that you requested. My issue with this entire ordeal is WHY would Wikipedia use such an inappropriate photo of Ralph when there are hundreds on the internet that depict who is and what he's accomplished as an athlete, rather than that one...which was simply his being kind to a fan and taking a photo when he really should not have & they have now used this image without his permission on the internet, as well as Wikipedia using it as his main page. Thanks again for your understanding and consideration.

"WHY would Wikipedia ..." - though that is not our problem on Commons, as we have - per this project - no direct influence on the choices of editors on other projects, we can only offer what we have, and per our policy we (at Commons) only accept freely licensed material (i.e., without any restriction in regard to derivaties and commercial use). Likely no better image had been uploaded to Commons so far.
RE: "I do own them" - I am not sure what you mean by that. Do you own prints or digital copies of these images? Well, that has - per se - no relevance for the copyright. You may buy an expensive painting of a contemporary artist at Sothebys, but you still can't make a photo of it and upload it to Commons, as physical ownership of an (still copyrighted) original work does not include transfer of copyright. See here for instruction how to prepare a valid permission. --Túrelio (talk) 14:53, 29 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Turelio, Thanks again for your expedient and thorough response; I will try to get the correct information required in order to change the photo with another image...i.e., copyright holder information that is required.

Hi Turelio, I have sent the proper information releasing all rights to Commons for the use of the two photos that were uploaded of Ralph Sampson. I am still not understanding why nothing has changed or is being done to change it. You stated that perhaps at the time there were no other photos to use, there are lots of photos on Flickr that represents Ralph as the athlete he was rather than a random photo of him with a fan that had to be cropped to fit his profile. I have been asking for this changed since 2010 and this is really unbelievable that I am having this issue continue. Also, when you google his name and the Wikipedia page comes up within google (before you login to google) it shows him as married; he has been divorced for over 10 years. I don't see his marital status and ex-wife's name once in Wikipedia) in order to change it perhaps you know where that information is and can make the correct change. Thanks...

" why nothing has changed " - 1) the people at :en will not replace a copyright-o.k.-photo by one that is still in copyright-review as yours are. 2) as we are all volunteers and do this work in our sparetime, it may take 1-2 weeks or more for the OTRS-processing.
"there are lots of photos on Flickr " - nice, then you go looking for a nice one and check whether it is CC-BY oder CC-BY-SA licesing (and with ND or NC restriction) and, if it is, then upload it to Commons. This is how volunteer-projects work. --Túrelio (talk) 10:16, 30 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Also, please look at the photo that is provided for Michael Jordan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_jordan...I am beginning to feel that this is personal, there is no reason that this photo should still be on Ralph Sampson's page; he is a public figure and former NBA player as I have mentioned repeatedly there are lots of other photos on flickr that could have been used that represent his career and what the wikipedia page is about rather than having the current photo become the legacy or representative of who he is. I sent several emails last week to the photo submission page and on yesterday and I have not received a response. Thanks again...

Please don't discuss :en Wikipedia issues at Commons. This is a different project. Besides, the above "Jordan" link is wrong and :en article en:Ralph Sampson says nothing about him being married or divorced, so nothing is wrong. --Túrelio (talk) 10:22, 30 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

I was not wrong when I stated that if you google his name and before you login to Wikipedia this is what you will see on your google page; I COPIED THE BELOW INFORMATION:

Ralph Lee Sampson, Jr. is a retired American college and professional basketball player. A 7-foot-4 phenom, three-time College Player of the Year, and No. 1 pick in the 1983 NBA Draft, Sampson brought heavy expectations with him to the NBA. Wikipedia Born: July 7, 1960 (age 51), Harrisonburg Spouse: Aleize Sampson Education: University of Virginia Position: Center Children: Ralph Sampson III Appears in: North Carolina Flashback: 1982 North Carolina vs. Virginia What projects am I allowed to discuss with you?

Please excuse me for communicating about Wikipedia concerns on this page. I didn't realize that it was only for the photo. Having said that, can you give me an update on if or when the photo will be replaced? Thanks...

No, because I am not a OTRS volunteer, I am an administrator. So, the processing OTRS volunteer will likely contact you either to get additional information or to give you the ticket #. If he/she doesn't add the ticket to the images by him/herself, you may contact may again to get that last step done. Thereafter, you can by yourself ask on the article talkpage on Wikipedia to have the current image replaced. --Túrelio (talk) 10:46, 30 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your immediate response...
