Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

hi Turelio! I recently modified a wikipage about the Company I'm working for, France Telecom Marine. We are a small subsidiary of French telecom operator France Telecom. Our business: lay and repair submarine cables. As this activity is very different from FT's one, I thought it would be interesting to update this page. My main problem are pictures. I illustrated the article with drawings and photos made by FT Marine staff. The Company CEO is aware that those pictures can be reused by anybody as they appear on Wikipedia Commons. I certainly made a mistake about the licence notification because you asked for deletion. Regarding those explanations, could you please help me with this topic? Thank you very much. Back to your question. @Julie, you first have to check for all of your uploads, who is the author/photographer. For example, you wrote in the description of File:Navire câblier Raymond Croze.JPG that it is "own work" and that you are the author. If that is true, fine (and you had a nice sea journey). But, if it was taken by somebody else, you have to find out, by whom. Then you have to find out, who has the rights over the images that were not originally taken by you. For example, if your company engaged a freelance photographer, then you have to put his/her name in the author entry. In addition, you have to check whether this photographer transferred all rights to your company, especially if the rights transfer included the right to redistribute the image under a free license (that is what you are doing when you upload it to Commons). If your contract with the photographer did not include that right, then you first have to get his permission. For the images/drawings produced by employees of your company, I assume that all rights are with the company. You should then check with your legal department, whether the individual name(s) of the author(s)/photographer(s) shall or shall not be put in the author entry. In addition, for all company-created images you should prepare a permission issued by your company to Commons. For that, go to Commons:Messages type, copy the "Déclaration de consentement", enter the file names or complete URLs of all images to be covered by this permission, enter the license name of your choice (CC-BY-SA recommended), mail it to the person in your company who is authorized to issue such a permission and ask him/her to put his/her name and the date under it and to mail it back, using a company email address, to permissions-commons-fr@wikimedia.org. The content of this permission will not be published, but handled by our OTRS volunteers, who check it and the put a so-called OTRS-ticket on all images. When this permission has been sent to OTRS, drop me a note. I can then un-delete the deleted images and put an OTRS-pending tag on them to prevent premature deletion. Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
