Hello, Jaimrsilva!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Dear Jaimrsilva,

Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments and sharing your pictures with the whole world. You are very welcome to keep uploading images, even though you can't win prizes any longer. To get started on editing relevant Wikipedia articles, click here for more information and help.
You can find all uploaded pictures in our central media collection Wikimedia Commons. Many photos are already used in Wikipedia. The contest was very successful with more than 165,000 images submitted throughout Europe. To make future contests even more successful, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in this survey.

Kind regards,

the Wiki Loves Monuments team

Notification about possible deletion edit

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

COM:OVERCAT edit

Please mind COM:OVERCAT when adding categories to your or other uploads. That is, something that is in category "Nevsky Prospekt" does not have additionally to be in category "Saint Petersburg", "Russia", "Europe" or "Countries" (or so). Please respect other people's work. --A.Savin 19:19, 18 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

I have blocked you for 3 days, because you ignored my request completely. --A.Savin 22:28, 18 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

I don't understand the real reason for blocking my account

Can you please describe, what you are willing to do with categories of your uploads? --A.Savin 23:05, 20 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
As you have said that those images had too many categories, I'll try to delete some. Please help me, if I am wrong. (In fact I think I have NOT understood exactly what's the problem. -- User:Jaimrsilva

COM:OVERCAT:

Over-categorization is when a file, category or other page is placed in several levels of the same branch in the category tree. The general rule is always place an image in the most specific categories, and not in the levels above those. Exceptions to this rule are explained in the section below.

Example: An image needing to be categorized shows a yellow circle. This image should be placed in Category:Yellow circles. If it is also placed in Category:Circles, it is over-categorized. We already know that it's a circle, because all yellow circles are circles. Therefore, Category:Circles is redundant.

This applies to most files: As mentioned under the adjacent illustration, files in Category:Black and white photographs of the Eiffel Tower should not also be in Category:Paris, files in Category:Albert Einstein should not be in Category:Physicists from Germany and so on.

--

Fortunately, some people already corrected most of your recent uploads, example --A.Savin 10:38, 21 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

I have unblocked you; please be careful with categories of your uploads. --A.Savin 11:25, 21 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Please also try to find the most specific category. For example, your File:Neues Museum (New Museum).jpg was listed in Category:Nuremberg and Category:Museums. But since you know the museum's name and location (Neues Museum in Nuremberg), it's not hard to find Category:Neues Museum Nuernberg, which is the most specific in this case. I also added Category:Spiral stairs in Germany, because it also describes the content. --Sitacuisses (talk) 02:59, 24 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Sitacuisses is right. If you know the location you photographed, you also should be able to find a proper category for. Spamming in categories like Museums or Saint Petersburg is disrespectful regarding other people's work. You've been long enough on Commons to guess it. Please avoid further block of your account and upload files into meaningful categories. There are tools like HotCat, that make searching for specific categories very easy. Thanks --A.Savin 09:43, 24 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Since you ignored (as always), I've blocked you, for 7 days now. --A.Savin 10:29, 24 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Unblock request declined

This blocked user asked to be unblocked, but one or more administrators has reviewed and declined this request. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked. Other administrators can also review this block, but should not override the decision without discussion.

Request reason: "I ignored what? I only didn't know this HotCat, plus I don't know where to find it. Since you have blocked me last time, and unblocked explaining what I did wrong, I have tried to do things the right way. I only want to do things the right way, and to collaborate with wiki."
Decline reason: "Ongoing problem (since 2010). Use the break to read up on rules and categories. The next time the block will be much longer. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 05:48, 25 August 2015 (UTC)"Reply

Of course you ignored something; because two people left a comment on your talk page proposing that you be careful with categorizing your uploads and having explained how [1] [2] and you continued your usual way nonetheless. Well, it is simply too silly discussion for me, this time I won't unblock you. Everything you can do to avoid similar situations in future, is to take those both comments as well as COM:Categories seriously regarding your uploads. --A.Savin 17:29, 24 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

See Help:Gadget-HotCat, you can enable it in your Special:Preferences. --A.Savin 20:28, 24 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Please don't upload new versions as duplicate files edit

Hi, I noticed that you have uploaded some bigger versions of your pictures that had already been present on commons for some years. E. g. File:Bonn - Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle.jpg, which you upoaded some days ago, had already been there as File:Bundeskunsthalle exterior 3.jpg since 2010, but in a smaller version. While it's fine to upload the higher resolution, please use the old page for this purpose. There's a link for this close to the bottom of the page in the "Versions" paragraph. Don't create a second page with the same file. Thanks, --Sitacuisses (talk) 03:28, 24 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
