Hello, Jprw!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:The Broken Compass cover.png edit

File:The Broken Compass cover.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

File:A Brief History of Crime.png edit

Wikimedia Commons does not accept fair use content.

We do this because Commons is a shared media repository. Downstream wikis have different policies based on local laws. Uses that are acceptable under US law, for example, may not be acceptable in many other countries with more restrictive rules.

In addition, fair use is not compatible with our aim as a collection of freely distributable media files.

Therefore, Commons cannot legally rely on fair use provisions.

Non-free content that may be used with reference to fair use may be uploaded locally if your project allows this.

Peter Hitchens in Iraq edit

A query has been raised about the image "File:Peter Hitchens in Iraq.jpg" that you uploaded, as it appears to have been taken from http://hitchensblog.mailonsunday.co.uk/2010/04/lightem-up-is-this-warfare.html. If you are authorized to license this image to the Commons, you will need to provide evidence that you are the copyright holder or have permission from the copyright holder to license the image and e-mail it to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. Otherwise, the image will have to be nominated for deletion. — Cheers, JackLee talk 17:24, 24 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

[Copied from User talk:Jacklee to keep the discussion in one place.] I don't have ownership of it and no doubt uploaded it prematurely. Do you recommend that I contact Hitchens directly, and if I get some kind of permission or authorisation from him, would that suffice to reinstate it (in the meantime I'm sure it will have to be deleted or suspended). Best wishes, Jprw (talk) 04:58, 25 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Content on the Commons needs to be freely licensed for use not only in Wikipedia articles, but for other people to download and use as they wish (including modification and commercial uses). Yes, you do need to ask Hitchens who owns the copyright in the photograph. It might be Hitchens himself, or the photographer. In either case, the copyright holder needs to confirm that he is agreeable to either releasing the image into the public domain, or licensing it under the GNU Free Documentation License or the Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY-3.0) or Attribution ShareAlike (CC-BY-SA-3.0) licences. This e-mail conversation must then be sent to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, where a volunteer will verify that the image has been properly licensed and place a suitable tag on the image description page. For sample e-mail templates, see "Commons:Email templates" and "en:Wikipedia:Example requests for permission". — Cheers, JackLee talk 07:33, 25 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

File:Peter_Hitchens_in_Iraq.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

This media was probably deleted.
Thanks for uploading File:Spoilt_Rotten_Dalrymple_cover.JPG. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Spoilt_Rotten_Dalrymple_cover.JPG) and the above demanded information in your request.

Is it your work? Isnt it under the copyright of the publisher and is it ok for the publisher the anyone can reuse this cover for any purpose including commercial reuse as long as Jprw is attributed? --Martin H. (talk) 07:01, 4 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I thought it was okay to use the scanned copies of book covers? What else do I need to do? I know for example that a scanned copy of the cover of the book The Real Global Warming Disaster was used correctly and successfully in that book's article. Please advise and thanks in advance. Jprw (talk) 09:51, 4 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I copied your response back from my talkpage, please keep discussions in one place, if you dont want it here please use the file talk. To answer your question: This is Wikimedia Commons, a free content project. All files here must be public domain due to copyright expiration or published under a free license by the copyright holder.
 • The article en:The Real Global Warming Disaster has an book cover en:File:Real Global Warming Disaster book cover.jpg that is not published under a free license but used under fair use - fair use is however not accepted on this project, Wikimedia Commons, see Commons:Fair use.
 • The problem here is that you uploaded someone else work with the claim that you created it yourself and that you said that I[You], the copyright holder of this work, hereby publish it under the following licenses - a license that allows anyone to reuse the work anywhere, anytime for ever purpose as long as you are credited. This license terms are required on Commons, so free commercial reuse and so on is the standard here and not the problem. But the license must come from the true copyright holder and the true copyright holder and author must be mentioned. Do not upload other peoples work with "It is entirely my own work" in Commons:Upload. So it is ok to upload book covers here provided that written evidence is given that the copyright holder agreed to a free license and provided that the correct author and source information is given with the upload. Non-free book covers are not accepted here.
--Martin H. (talk) 10:03, 4 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

What is the diffrence between fair use and free license? Why can the cover for the Real Global Warming Disaster be used, but the cover for Spoilt Rotten can't? What is the difference exactly? Jprw (talk) 10:27, 4 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Copied your question again back from my talkpage. Fair use (In UK it is "Fair dealing") is the limited use of copyrighted material without permission from the rights holders for educational purposes. A free content license is a license granted by the copyright holder that allows anyone to reuse te material, anytime, for any purpose not only educational purposes but all imaginable purposes including commercial reuse. So to say a blank permission. All Wikimedia projects are free content projects in the first place. The English Wikipedia allows a limited use of fair use material, e.g. for book covers. The cover for Spoilt Rotten can be on Wikipedia under fair use but not here on Wikimedia Commons, here fair use is forbidden. Please read the first parts of Commons:Licensing, thats page is suggested for reading in the Commons:First steps tour. --Martin H. (talk) 10:38, 4 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I now understand, and have uploaded using the correct procedure a different file to Wikipedia itself. Thank you for your painstaking explanations and patience. Please be so kind as to delete the file Spoilt Rotten Dalrymple cover.JPG from Wikicommons. Best wishes, Jprw (talk) 11:40, 4 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome, I will do this. The upload on en.wikipedia en:File:Spoilt Rotten Dalrymple cover 10.JPG needs some minor corrections, people at en.wp will help you with this or you can look for examples in other en:Category:Book covers on en.wikipedia. --Martin H.
