You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. it looks like you have uploaded a bunch of graphs without adding a license template. The text {{cc-by-sa-3.0}} should be added to them. Also note that a large portion have the URL to the source misspelled, ending on .edy instead of .edu. The graphs also don't have an index on what the colors mean. Woosh, I fixed it. I hadn't batch edit like that before #learnedsomethingtoday. You will still need to categorize the images. adding [[Category:Economy of X-country]] will do for most of them. I based the legend on a SVG I had downloaded from the site. But now in for example at File:Turks and Caicos Export Treemap.png, red seems to be the color for paper instead of orange. :S

Hi Jim- Thanks for your clarification. I am working on a project from MIT/Harvard and felt like a new user name to capture all of the project efforts/notes/updates was appropriate. I am happy to change the screen name, but would hate to lose access to all of the images I have posted because of this technicality. Can you tell me how to change the name of the account in order to have the block removed? Any rule clarification would be helpful - I want to be able to keep this account if there's any way possible (it took many, many hours to upload the images to the commons and get them labeled correctly with the correct copyright information) and, like I said, am happy to make any changes to the account itself to make that possible. I'm not sure I understand your request -- or perhaps you do not understand how Commons works. The images do not belong to an account, as they do on Flickr and YouTube. Using a new name, you (and everyone else) will continue to have full access to all of the images you uploaded and you will be able to continue to edit them. None of your work will be lost or disappear. As the note above says, you are perfectly free to open a new account under a new, personal, name of your choosing.

As a separate issue, I see above that some of the images had license problems. A quick look at a couple of them suggests that you have fixed the problems, but any that you have not fixed may be deleted.

Finally, I encourage you to investigate uploading them in SVG form, perhaps with many more of the boxes labeled. On File:United States Export Treemap.png it is hard to read many of the labels. Commons can accept images up to 100MB, and provides automatic SVG>>PNG conversion for downloads. I also encourage you to put a date on them -- the US image is different from those on the source site -- later, perhaps? Economic data is not very useful without a date. Jim . . . . Jim, I'm one of the team members from MIT/Harvard. Hoping to get a little more clarity on how to use the Commons properly. If I understand you correctly, these images in the WikiCommons user MIT Harvard Observatory will stay live and accessible, but we can't add any more. To add more, we need to create user names for each of the team members? Is that right? Given the fact that we are multiple people on the team adding lots of images, how do you suggest we organize on the Commons in a way that keeps all the images in one place? Or is that not possible with multiple users? Thanks for your guidance (and patience).

Yes, exactly. Please create an account for each person. This could be as simple and impersonal as User:MITHO1, USER:MITHO2, etc. or perhaps User:MITHO John, User:MITHO Sally, or whatever else floats your boat. You can be anonymous, or not, as you choose. Your username need have no relationship to MITHO and, in general, it is not the way that you or anyone else will find particular groups of images. The only firm rules are one username, one person, and that it cannot be organizational. (A person may, for special reasons, have more than one username. If any of your colleagues are already active on WMF, they could have a new name for this activity, but they must keep the two separate and not use both names in the same discussion, for example.)

Commons is designed to make it easy to find images. There are two complementary ways to accomplish your ends. The first is Commons categories. Within very broad limits an image can have almost any categories that are helpful. I am looking at File:Uruguay Export Treemap.png. It was in Category:Treemaps on Export. I have just replaced that with a new category,Category:Treemaps on export from the MIT Harvard Economic Complexity Observatory. I have also added it to Category:Economy of Uruguay. I encourage you to look at this image and then make similar changes to the categories of your others.

It is also possible to create galleries of images. While you may find that the categories solve your problem perfectly, they are constrained to include all of the images in the category, without captions, and to be in alphabetical order. Galleries can be a selection of images from different categories, arranged by sub-topic, with captions. Please, though, always add categories first, then perhaps do galleries.

Please read my comment above (4/13) again -- I think your work is fascinating, but the images you have uploaded are a pale shadow of what I see on the source site.

Finally, as always, if you have questions, ask. Aside from the fact that I have a degree from Harvard and have spent many hours at MIT, most Commons editors try to help guide newbies through the complexities of Commons and make your work here as easy as possible. BTW the reason for the image degradation from the source site is that the treemaps from the source site distort (words run into other boxes) when generated as SVG/PNG output. So we've been forced to screenshoot them and trim. The programmer is trying to figure out a fix. One final question... for now... how do you create a gallery? user: Doubleodd

You create a gallery by simply typing an appropriate name into the search box, and hitting the create link -- see Commons:Galleries. Note the rules on naming there. Note also that a gallery is not an article -- you might put a sentence of explanation, but not much more. I'm not at all sure that you need galleries for these maps -- I think Cats will fill the bill, but I may be wrong. The basic markup is

The caption is optional, omit the pipe (|) if you omit the caption. Each image is on a new line. They will set from left to right to fill the available window. Because Commons can be used on everything from small screen phones to screens 2000Px wide, we discourage any further formatting instructions. Markup for a fairly elaborate gallery is at Lighthouses_in_Maine.

I usually suggest that newbies build galleries in a User subpage such as User:Doubleodd/Sandbox1 and then copy them to mainspace when they are ready for public view. We delete about 100 new galleries every day, mostly vandals, and incomplete galleries may well be deleted. To create the subpage, you can just click on the redlink above and start typing. Jim . . . .
